If the appeal is just about the sentence, then the actual crime is likely not to be discussed at all, I think. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't he plead guilty when he knew he was about to be mentally examined?
The actual crime in the context of the sentence will be discussed, however it is all done in a private hearing.
They will have details of the crime, injuries, background reports etc. Based on that they will decide if the sentence is fair, should be reduced or increased.

i have a 16 year old boy and just can't comprehend this at all
to go from no crime to the most extreme, literally overnight. it apalls me and fascinates me at the same time. I wonder how his mother is in all this.

He didn’t plead guilty at first but after he was found guilty he confirmed his own admission of guilt just before sentencing, which I will never understand but there you go. He’s an attention seeking little boy who takes great pleasure in peoples pain.

yes, thats what he is now, but how has he become this when he was so 'normal' ....there was no build up to it, just a normal lad.

I don't think we need telling any details' can just imagine them

Was he though? He was an habitual cannabis user, which is not normal at all among 16 year olds in rural, island communities.

It seems pretty normal on Bute lol. But I do get your point.
I also don't think he was a daily smoker either though.

I stand corrected!

Even so I think drug use at an age when the brain is still forming has to have some effect psychologically, especially if there's some underlying mental issue already there.

i would think his family have had to move away from the area, the shame of it all

Suppose it was inevitable and best to tie up any loose ends but seriously this guy likes getting attention. All more ordeal for Alesha's family to go through. He's put them through so much more than anyone should have to. They've been so Strong.

Right? You must have lived a sheltered life if you think it's not normal for 16 year olds to smoke cannabis.

I'm kind of sick of reading there was no build up to this crime. It's quite obvious to me with the information we have (which will be tiny in comparison to what we don't) that there was most definitely a build-up to this crime in some way or another. No way am I trying to rile anybody, it's a point that kept coming back around throughout the trial and sentencing, and to be frank I find quite laughable.

Yep, totally agree with this.
Loads of 16 year olds smoke cannabis, i did in my teenage years.
He didn't turn into a rapist and killer suddenly in the middle of the night either. Of course there was a build up to it, we may never know exactly what that was but like you say from the small amount of information available it's quite obvious.

Aah ok thanks. What about any mental health evals? Was he declared sane, disturbed or any of that? Will that now be looked at in the context of looking at the sentence? I am wondering if he was sexually abused himself, for example, when he was younger.

I don't think it is normal for all 16 yo to smoke cannabis and get drunk. Most 16 yo don't even smoke cigarettes these days imo. Wandering around in the middle of the night looking for drugs is no way normal imo.

He was found sane. The psychologist also deemed that he does not suffer from any mental health conditions, although since he is under 18 I assume further tests will need to be carried out as certain disorders can only be diagnosed as an adult. I assume his mental health will be looked at in the context of his sentence when he is appealing, but I'm not sure what there is to say about it? The main factor will be his age I would guess. I gather that he used to self-harm and said he had depression when he was younger but I'm not sure about anything else. There's been no indication that he was sexually abused himself but I understand that line of thinking.

I completely agree and I believe it has been proved. No link because MOO. If all teens in Bute are on cannabis then Bute has a big problem.
