Mrs Justice Yip, who is presiding over the trial, sent the jury out to consider their verdicts just after 10am today on Wednesday, December 20. Addressing the jury, the judge said: "It’s entirely up to you how you organise your discussions. You may find it useful to find a juror to chair your discussions."

She says all of them should be able to “express their views” and adds: "If you each listen to the views of others, in almost all cases juries are able to reach verdicts they all agree on.

"It is important you try to reach verdicts which are unanimous. The law permits me in certain circumstances to accept a verdict which is not the verdict of you all. Those circumstances have not yet arisen. Should the time come when it is possible for me to accept a majority verdict, I will give you a further direction."

I’m just catching up but I looks like I am the only one who loved the “she stole our defence “ quote.
It did make me laugh.
Yep.

and boy's "I was admiring trees" or "my eyes were going up and down while I was running", Police mix up with clothes, etc ;)
I have never rolled my poor eyes as much as during this case.

Not prejudging any verdict, but in the event one or both were to be found guilty, is it likely sentencing would happen before Christmas?

I think - if the verdicts are guilty - then Judge Yip will sentence by the end of this week.
Unless, as Honey said, Judge wants further reports - or Defence Counsel ask for them ?

I have a feeling that Y if found guilty will appeal the verdict and or sentence. I can imagine him teaching himself law and trying to outwit even his own lawyers.

The closings were pretty much what I expected and I felt the Barristers did a good job of representing their clients, in difficult circumstances.

There are obviously a number of factual issues for the jury to deterine.

Once they make those decisions, the inferences will follow.

I think there are some interesting aspects to discuss as to facts and inferences post verdict.

The eyes going up and down when running was a classic. How does he think people manage to play sport, run a relay race etc?!

I have been tempted to start using "Tesco" as a adjective..

They could already have one decision made, its been an hour.

I want to believe the boys version, but as well as the forensic evidence, the girls defence mocking his version that she hid the knife down the back of her trousers for an hour AND sat down like that, is preposterous (imo). Surely it would have slid down her trouser leg immediately! And thus had her dna on, but it didn't.

I've wavered alot over this, but I think I know my thoughts now.

I think a decision could be today, but definitely by close of business tomorrow

Justice Yip tells the jury: “Thank you members of the jury. We are all extremely grateful for your service on a difficult and distressing case. All 12 of you have provided outstanding service. It has been apparent you’ve been listening very carefully. You’ve more than performed your role as jurors. We are all extremely grateful for that.”

The judge excuses them from further jury service.

Justice Yip says she will not pass sentence this week, but invites them to return for the hearing.

The jury are discharged.

She adds: “I hope knowing you have fulfilled such an important public duty will be of some comfort to you. You go with our sincere thanks for the work you have put in.”

"'I will have to impose a life sentence'"
The jury leave the courtroom.
Justice Yip tells Girl X and Boy Y: “Given you’ve been found guilty. I will have to sentence you. I’m sure you already know I will have to impose a life sentence. What I have to decide is the minimum amount of time you will be required to serve before you might be considered for release. I’m not going to do that this week. I’m going to ask for reports in relation to both of you. I will have to find a date that is suitable for that purpose.”
The judge rises to allow counsel to discuss these arrangements.
She will allow the defendants to leave the dock.

Gasps in courtroom as guilty verdicts delivered

Gasps were heard in the courtroom as the verdicts were delivered.

Who was gasping? I certainly wasn’t shocked !!!!

I think it was no contest for Girl X. A very disturbed individual. I was undecided on Boy Y...maybe more information will now come to light. I do hope his verdict is the right one. A dreadful crime though. RiP Brianna.
