Gasps in courtroom as guilty verdicts delivered

Gasps were heard in the courtroom as the verdicts were delivered.

Who was gasping? I certainly wasn’t shocked !!!!

"There was no visible reaction from the defendants as they were found guilty of murder."

They knew.

Ursula Doyle, deputy chief crown prosecutor of CPS Mersey Cheshire, said: “This has been one of the most distressing cases the Crown Prosecution Service has had to deal with.

“The planning, the violence and the age of the killers is beyond belief.

“Brianna Ghey was subjected to a frenzied and ferocious attack and was stabbed 28 times in broad daylight in a public park.

“Girl X and Boy Y appear to have been a deadly influence on each other and turned what may have started out as dark fantasies about murder into a reality.

“The pages and pages of WhatsApp messages between the two, planning and plotting to kill people, talking of murder, torture and cruelty were very difficult to read.

“The messages provided a terrifying insight into the minds of the two defendants. However, they also provided us with the detailed planning of the attack and then the attempts to cover it up.

“The Crown Prosecution Service authorised a charge of murder for both of the defendants. They were both equally responsible in planning the killing and carrying it out.

“In the trial, the defendants tried to blame each other to absolve themselves. The Jury has clearly seen their explanations for the lies that they were.

“This has been a difficult prosecution not least because two very young people were on trial for the most serious offence known to criminal law.

“It has involved using a number of measures to ensure that the defendants could participate fully in the trial and enable them to give their evidence.

“The Crown Prosecution Service would like to thank the family of Brianna Ghey for the courage and dignity that they have shown throughout these proceedings.

“We hope today’s verdict brings some solace, and our thoughts and sympathies remain with them at this difficult time.”

Exactly. I think it was very much an anticipated verdict for both of them.

No shock at all with this verdict. In fact, the most surprising thing is that it took almost 5 hours but at least it shows the jury took their roles seriously.

<modsnip: sub judice>

Overall, a massive tragedy.

"These are really high functioning, intelligent children," said the officer [Det Ch Supt Mike Evans], who is head of crime at Cheshire Police.

"I know people sat at home reading this will have this sort of image that they've built themselves.

"But actually they're both really clever kids and very bright, very articulate.

He added: "They are both really intelligent and quite high functioning. I think that has brought a level of arrogance and maybe confidence which has maybe been played out in court.” He criticised the killers for putting Brianna’s parents, Esther Ghey and Peter Spooner, 32, through the ordeal of the trial.

"It is almost as cruel as what they did, to make the family relive it, when there is significant evidence pointing to guilt. It is cowardice in my view” he said. He added: "They (Brianna’s parents) have been an absolute credit and our hearts go out to them. They have had to sit in court and listen to it all over again because two individuals will not take responsibility for what they have done and that makes it even worse.”

Girl X, who was excluded from school four months before the murder for giving cannabis to another pupil, has traits of autism and ADHD and “high levels of anxiety. Boy Y has been diagnosed with autism along with a “high level of social anxiety”. He also has “selective mutism” and had gradually stopped speaking to anyone apart from his mother after his arrest.

I think they were probably decided by 1pm, but usually Judge doesnt want to bring in a verdict during lunch hour.
Then at 2pm, the Court would need time to advise all relevant parties so that they can get back to the courtroom to hear the verdict.

"Heartbroken mother of murdered Brianna Ghey launches

'mindfulness' campaign

in her daughter's memory to urge school children to behave with 'empathy and compassion' to one another.

She has spoken of her hope that killings like Brianna's could be averted by encouraging young people to learn greater empathy towards their peers.

She has begun delivering assemblies in schools in the North West of England, saying mental health techniques are almost
'more important than academic skills'.

'You could come out with all straight As but if you can't cope in life, if you are really struggling with anxiety and you don't know how to manage that, then you're…ultimately not going to be able to contribute to society in the way that you would like'."

Ms Ghey has tears in her eyes as she remembers the day she found out about her daughter's death.
"I was out walking the dogs with my partner," she says.
"We noticed there was a very high police presence in our area and then police in our street as well.
"I sort of joked - 'if Brianna doesn't come home soon I'll have to ring the police'.
"And when we got to the front door, the door was open and there were two policemen stood in the house."

Judge back in court

Mrs Justice Yip is back in court now and discussing matters with the barristers.
They are discussing when sentencing will take place, and what further reports are needed before then.

Brianna's mum may speak at sentencing

Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC says Brianna's mum Esther Ghey may wish to read her victim impact statement on the day of sentencing.
She says Ms Ghey accepts that reports need to be compiled into the defendants, but that she wishes for the case to be concluded as soon as possible.
Mrs Justice Yip commended Ms Ghey for her 'very sensible and balanced approach in what must be the most appalling circumstances'.
The judge says she doesn't expect reports to 'make a huge difference to the outcome' of the sentence she passes, but that it is 'right that I should have all the information available'.

Judge will set date for sentencing tomorrow

The judge says she will decide on a sentencing date tomorrow, following further consultation with the parties.
The media has applied for reporting restrictions, which prohibit the identification of the defendants, to be lifted.
The judge says she will not make a decision this afternoon, and wants to take time to consider it.
She says the matter will be discussed further in court tomorrow.

Hearing will resume tomorrow

The hearing has now concluded.

Well done, jury!

I hope Brianna's family can breathe a sigh of relief and focus now on their needs, loving each other and remembering Brianna for the positives.

Why Brianna Ghey police quickly ruled out transphobia as motive

Killers’ messages led investigators to believe plot was not driven primarily by a hatred of Brianna’s transgender identity

Glad to hear this verdict and not at all surprised, there was no doubt in my mind that both were guilty. <modsnip: sub judice>

Brianna's headteacher also remembered the teenager as 'loud and proud and confident'.

Speaking to the BBC, Emma Mills said: 'There was never any evidence of Brianna being bullied within school or out of school. Brianna was very much able to give as good as she got in that way.

'And I think what was really hard was that she was portrayed in the media as a victim and she didn't live her life as a victim.

'She was someone that was loud and proud and confident in who she was.'

Brianna's murder sent shockwaves across the UK and a public outpouring of anger saw multiple vigils held in the days following her death.

Oh, gosh, I watched Brianna's mum's statement in the video at that link, and just burst into tears when she called for compassion for the families of Girl X and Boy Y at the end because 'they too have lost a child'. She's got a deeper well of compassion than I would in her position, at this time. I'd be trying desperately to hold it together and focussed on my own pain; trials are brutal on victim's families.
