GUILTY UK - Brianna Ghey, 16, murdered in Culcheth Linear Park, Feb 2023 *2 teenagers charged*

Good!!!!!!!!!!!
The benefit of this delay is that it gives time for the defendants to prepare for their names to be disclosed, but also ALL the families, both victim and defendants. There is no possibility of anyone having a 'normal' holiday season, but at least they won't be dealing with the media reaction to the name disclosure in the next few weeks.

My sympathy is ONLY for the innocent victim Brianna.
A girl murdered in a horrific way.
And HER family.

And that's your prerogative, that's fine.

Personally, Esther's statement to the press yesterday made a huge impression on me, and I'm trying to think of those affected by this case on all sides with a measure of compassion for their circumstances. If she can do it and ask others to do so, I figure it's the least I can do.

I'll probably have a different flavour of commentary to offer after sentencing.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion.
Coddling vicious murderers is not my idea of Justice.

I have been very impressed by Judge Yip so far and hope that justice will be done by giving the pair of them the longest sentence she possibly can.

I think it is a good compromise to wait until sentencing to name them publicly. I am sure anyone interested in the case and locals have already found out their names.
I have seen numerous comments complimenting Brianna's parents on their gracious and compassionate behaviour towards the parents of x and y.

I feel the parents, friends and wider family must be distraught . I imagine there could be young relatives also having to come to terms with what has happened.

The other potential victims could also need help in preparing to see articles on the news and in the press.

I don't think the sentence will be the highest possible, as Judges in the UK sentence within a range having regard to factors.

There are aggravating circumstances here e.g. taking a weapon with premeditation

A baseline starting point of 15 years applies to all murder cases committed by offenders aged 18 or over. There is a 25-year starting point for murders involving the use of a weapon which has been taken to the scene with intent, which was put in place to recognise the seriousness of the illegal possession and use of knives in public.

However it is likely to be on the lower end due to the age at the time of offending (15)

Offenders who are under 18 when they commit murder face a sliding scale of starting points ranging from 8 to 27 years, depending on the age of the offender when the offence was committed and the seriousness of the offence.

Alles IMO

I like the fact that Judge Yip has already made her feelings clear re their attendance.

'Important' defendants attend their sentencing

The judge says: “There has been a lot of attention on defendants not attending their sentencing. I hope there won’t be anything of that sort. It is important they attend their sentencing hearing.”

Mr Pratt says: “She seemed to be under no illusion that she ought to be present.”

Mr Littler adds: “Likewise.”

Justice Yip: “They need to start their rehabilitation and part of that may be facing the consequences.”

Brianna’s head teachers statement

'Losing Brianna has been heart-breaking. She was a creative, witty young lady who was robbed of the chance to overcome her anxieties, robbed of the chance to grow up and robbed of the chance to fulfill her ambitions of training in hair and beauty.

'Her nails matching with her phone case. Her fluffy handbag and coat. The over-the-knee white socks and rolled up skirt. The amazing hair extensions and lashes that went on for days. Her creativity and flair for fashion. She was iconic in her look, she had a sparkle, and you could never miss her. Once met, never forgotten.

'The loss of any life is awful, a child even worse, but what happened to Brianna is beyond comprehension and has changed me as a person and my outlook on life forever.

'Seeing people in the media talk about her being bullied is hurtful on so many levels. Least of all how disrespectful this is to Brianna. She was sharp-tongued (I know as I was on the receiving end of it many a time), had a strong sense of justice and was not afraid to say what she thought. She had very close relationships with staff due to nature of her personalised and bespoke timetable in school - she was not in the main body of the school due to her social anxiety. She never alleged any bullying, and I would pity the person who would have tried to be honest.

'My disillusionment with the tabloid press and social media has grown daily in the last 10 months. How things can be twisted but also how lies can be told with no sense of responsibility or care for the hurt and pain it causes. It is still happening now - I realise it is a beast that can't be tamed and that scares me.

'Most of all out of everything that has happened, I have been inspired by the true force of nature that is Brianna's mum, Esther. She is dignified, strong and a warrior mother. Being there for Brianna not only when she was alive, but standing strong for her in her death, in a way that I am totally in awe of. She is dedicated to making a positive legacy for Brianna in helping other young people. To create something so positive out of such personal pain and tragedy, is truly remarkable. She is just that, remarkable, and I am very proud to call her my friend.'

Struck by this quote from Briannas mum
This was said by Brianna's head teacher. She was referring to posts which alleged Brianna was bullied, which the head said was not correct.

I am sure you know what I meant!
No I am curious because I haven't been following the tabloid reporting on it and Mr Jitty was referring to the tabloid press.
Do you know why the head teacher would be concerned about articles in the tabloid press? ( SM posts - nothing surprises me - no regulation whatsoever so am not curious about that)

She might be referring to the disgraceful way the Mail marketed its Brianna podcast for starters. I won’t repeat it here but it’s one of the most disturbing things I’d seen in a while.

There have been articles in the press stating Brianna was bullied.

I think the press have tried to portray her as a vulnerable bullied transgender girl when the reality is she wasn’t bullied at all, could hold her own and wasnt afraid to say what she thought. That’s what I take from her statement if you read through it above ^

Gosh. Yes that's amazing that the tabloids would be publishing articles while trying to portray her in that way

I have read the whole thread and maybe I missed those links. I will have a google and see what turns up

( Naturally it would have been a very serious matter for the school had she been bullied for being TG while at school and the Head has definitively said that was not the case)

thanks

The Judge said:

"Defendants have vulnerabilities beyond their youth'".

How come these vulnerabilities were NOT addressed before this heinous crime???

In fact, they were diagnosed only AFTER the murder of an innocent victim.

JMO
The UK has very long delays for diagnoses like these for children who are referred and known to be struggling. Then after diagnosis you need support, and that is often lacking.

I also think that the diagnoses they have now been given probably don't have all that much connection to the crimes they've been convicted of.
