This has just crossed my mind, so I'm just going to put this thought out there...
If SC truly believes she was that close to CL, in what circumstances would CL not say she was seeing someone or who that someone was? Is it possible that someone could be romantically connected to SC?
I do not know what SCs relationship status has been at any time. Perhaps CL was secretive or someone who just compartmentalises their lives.

I must admit, I have considered this too but JK, not SC

I guess Claudia may have mentioned a new boyfriend to stop someone pestering her about going on a date with a work mate.
but I think the Police believe this because there is some kind of evidence to back it up.

We don't have that information. It would make sense as to why he was in the frame when added to his frequenting the Nag's Head.
silver car?

“He is a person known to the investigation from the outset.
He's our prime suspect.
It is information he has decided to impart today.
I don't believe a word of it.
I don’t criticise him
Not in the public arena or I'd lose my job
but I would be a liar if I said I didn’t find it very frustrating.”
He's a lying son of a b.... and I'm going to bring him to justice if it's the last thing I do.

this article, for me, raises some questions. - Colleague of missing York chef Claudia Lawrence comes forward with fresh lead

  • Police said a colleague ( who has been known to the investigation from the outset) came forward to tell them she had been out with a boyfriend until about 5am on Tuesday, March 17.
  • Officers also revealed for the first time that the 36-year-old was in a casual relationship with a man from York, rather than being entirely single.
  • Police believe it is unlikely that the casual boyfriend (who she had been seeing for several months), who is known to the police, is the man she was out with two days before she disappeared.
  • Casual boyfriend has long term partner and has not been eliminated from the enquiry (as at 18th March 2010).
  • no-one has come forward
  • what did Claudia do after speaking to her mother?
This statement would seem to indicate that they had information that supported/confirmed the late night out:
'“You would think that because she was getting up early for work she would have gone to bed early on the Wednesday, but she was on an early shift on the Tuesday too and we now know she didn’t go to bed early then."

The next statement raises a question for me:
“Her text traffic generally finished at nine or half past nine because she was going to bed and it did on that Wednesday night." What about the Tuesday night? Was this different? Did information from Claudias phone support that she went out late? Would the night out with the new boyfriend not be arranged by phone? If Claudia was a prolific phone/text user, she must have contacted the new boyfriend via her phone. The polcie must have his number, no?

  1. who is the New Boyfriend?
  2. who is the Casual Boyfriend, and has he now been eliminated from the enquiry?
  3. what data does the police have to support the late night out?
  4. who is the work colleague
  5. has either 1,2 and/or 4 been arrested?
Some very good questions

Significant new lead in Claudia Lawrence inquiry

About the new lead from Claudias colleague a year after her disappearance
  • "If this happened a couple of days before she went missing then that is really significant, and I find it quite hard to believe that this colleague has waited until exactly a year after she's missing to tell the police about this conversation." - Suzy Cooper
  • "It's unbelievable... that someone who has previously been interviewed by the police has suddenly remembered that he had a conversation with Claudia the day before she disappeared." Peter Lawrence

About the New Boyfriend and late night out
  • Suzy Cooper said that she didn't know about the boyfriend that Miss Lawrence was out with until the early hours of the morning, two days before she disappeared.
  • " I'm quite sceptical. I can't say it didn't happen, but from what I know about Claudia it is highly unlikely." - Suzy Cooper
  • Suzy Cooper said she found it hard to believe that Claudia would have been out until nearly 5am on March 17, when her shift at the University's Roger Kirk Centre canteen began at 6am.
  • "...the fact that Claudia - who was always tired with her very physical job and with her early shifts and went to bed at 9.30 at night by the latest during the week - apparently said she was up until about 4.30 in the morning." Peter Lawrence
About the Casual Boyfriend
  • "I didn't know Claudia was seeing someone casually. I thought I knew everything about her, and then I found out that I didn't. - Suzy Cooper
Suzy and possibly others might have known the casual boyfriend but not as a casual boyfriend !if for example he was still legally married they ( Claudia and him ) might have kept it secret .He might have confessed to the police and they in turn kept their promise to keep it confidential .

Sc might have known him but not as such.
We are not telling everything to everybody here are we ?

And I did not interview him myself

I wonder if police use the terms 'partner' and 'spouse' as meaning one and the same thing? Another way of protecting a witness?

That is a very good point

@x_caz_x your last sentence is the most telling one except not to SC.
