Thank you! I have never heard the term before!

Sometimes "squaddies" by their very "nature" tend to get a bad press in some towns.
Some pubs and nightclubs use to refuse entry (but you'd know to avoid them). Some taxi firms would refuse to take you. It's just one of those things. It's not new.

Kipling wrote in "Tommy".

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Nothing new at al.

Soldiers, basically, anyone in the armed forces

I've always understood it to mean the ranks (privates, corporals, maybe sergeants) rather than officers but maybe the term is used differently in different areas.

One thing which has been bothering me for a while now is the last trace of his phone at Barton Mills. If we assume he and his phone were together, I have to wonder if this was a precursor to his burial in Thetford Forest. While this is not a large tract of land by US standards, it is by British ones at 47,000 acres. One corner of the forest is barely a mile from Barton Mills.

Where I grew up there were a least 3 big RAF/army bases within a few miles. The "squaddies" didn't have a very good reputation back then, coming into small towns for nights out and chatting up schoolgirls! I think the forces are far more esteemed by the public these days, and I'd hate to think someone couldn't get a taxi or in a club because of being in the forces.

Now then, back to the bike, I refuse to believe it's not relevant. I have never in all my sleuthing days seen a missing poster mention something specific which has no basis.

I agree, why would the police want people to spend time looking out for something they have no reason to believe is relevant? They risk having to follow up reports of every abandoned bike in the county.

We've been told that the phone pings were at a speed too fast to be walking and the original suggestion of a bin lorry suggests something maybe slower moving than a car - for example a bike!

Anyonw who had a bike go missing that night should definitely contact the police

I had "those experiences" having an ex mil dad and being ex mil.
I had them, because "dealing with well trained 20 somethings" is hard for the locals.
Some of the "blokes" I met, were shocking. That is the way it is.

But moving on. The bike.
If you get caught "stealing" the Provost (if you are lucky) will come down on you like a ton of bricks. If you get "unlucky" you end up in Colchester.

Corrie...and the RAF Reg...and stealing....
He'd "more than" be aware of what may happen to him.

So why did the police ask about "a bike" ?

Pushbike isn't specified so the bike could be a motorbike or a scooter the police have in mind here.

How odd, I just tried to order a pizza from somewhere (I tried on several different food delivery sites) and they're closed which is strange as normally they close at 1am weekdays and even stay open as late as 3.30am on the weekends.

Absolutely, it's all about perception but y'know, small town mentality and all that....does it still exist in BSE? I left as soon as I could (to go to uni) and have only met a couple of forces folk since then, funnily enough one of them did end up in Colchester. The other, now a family man, is one of my heroes.

I don't want to be "doom and gloom" here. Just trying to state reality.
It looks like this chap is dead and hidden....by now.
It is the "elephant in the room" that the MSM will never talk about.

The "water" is the best option to search.
Or routes to the water, vehicles could reach.

Terrorism....there is no "claim" and no "spectacular".
Hit and run....there is no "body in situ".
Street crime....possibly. But access to a car thereafter is questionable. But possible.

corrie is sat, half smashed, with a "ten miler" ahead of him.
Walk...yes.
Taxi...yes
Hitch hike...yes

He's not stupid (although drunk).
He is "handy".
He is Scottish ! (that's a light hearted !)

I do have "one other theory", But it is "way out there".
But it has happened to me.
And maybe happened to him.
Pink shirts...in England....have a tendency to "set people off".
I own several pink Ralph Lauren shirts. And for some reason, it sets people off.

He's 5 foot 10. Serving RAF Reg. And handy. And friendly.
I'm 6 foot 5 and ex "bootneck". And handy. But not so friendly !
We wear the same clothes. White jeans, pink shirts.

The point being.... if he left that town he may have been hit by a car.
If he didn't leave that town.....someone that killed him and hid is body, i from that town.
And they had access to a car.

EDIT.
1. Because of the "pings", a car is required
2. 8.00am an after, may give a clue more worthy than "where was he at 400am".

I think small town mentality exists still in a lot of small towns.

I couldn't wait to get out of BSE to go to uni too, but years later I ended up coming back. I would say I am pleasantly pleased at how BSE has progressed. The pub I drink in gets a lot of squaddies and US military in it, so I would say they are accepted and some become good friends.

I have chatted to squaddies in the pub many a time and the experiences have always been positive. Very occasionally we have had arrogant drunk squaddies in, but no more so than arrogant, drunk bury inhabitants and no more annoying than drunk arrogant tourists.
There may be a few people who don't like the squaddies, but I'd say in my experience, on the whole they are accepted.

Good to hear, Tricksy! What's the local feeling at the moment do you think? Are people still talking about Corrie a lot?

Yikes! How can he possibly have just vanished!! I'm struggling to pinpoint this exact delivery area, can anyone help?

Off topic but have you seen the super posh Greggs in BSE? Not the one we're looking at here, a different one, looks more like a Betty's!

I just went on google maps street view and followed from the grapes pub to Greggs which is a straight road as his mum has stated. There is an H samuels and a carphone warehouse in the vicinty behind Greggs where CCTV see him going into but not out. They have No CCTV?

Anyway, behind Greggs is, what looks like a car park, market square is what it's named as on google maps. This is baffling. Could someone have picked him up from this area with no cameras in view? I get why the police had the bin lorry theory in mind at first! Makes much more sense now. Of course we are being spoon fed information so it's difficult...

  • #419
Also there is a camera basically on St. Johns street and brentgovel street facing directly toward Greggs, I assume this would be the camera they seen him walking behind Greggs after awakening from a breif nap, he goes behind these shops and is never seen again. Street view doesn't go past Greggs as this isn't a main road it's a pedestrian walking area only. Feeling frustrated here! Short blackland is very close to Greggs I understand that is why they would have wanted to speak to the 3 youths seen hanging around that early in the morning!

This is absolutely crazy, feel heart sorry for his family! It is like he has literally disappeared!!
