Couldnt they impose some sort of emergency curfew and anyone milling around just arrest them for the night? At least it would clear the streets somewhat.

Yes, I was wondering why that's not been done already. This is the third night of violence.

I did the young australian thing of backpacking in the early 90's and lived and worked in london for 2 years......I absolutley loved london and this has really upset me......I lived in clapham junction and one of my best pommy friends is in croydon. I already know the type of people that would be involved in these riots, I dealt with them every day working in stockwell. To me if these people dont want to live within societies rules like the rest of us do, then take them out of society............I really hope the legal system uses this as an example and alot of these thugs end up in jail for a long time.

One thing that is very disturbing to me is the use of guns over there now. When I left the police did not have guns and I actually thought the amount of killings was very very low for a city of that size as compared to cities of the same size in america. I have heard that guns are now more of a big problem with the crims and the police now have them. That scares me. We are having the same thing here, crims are getting the guns.

For the americans on here, I do understand why you have guns to protect yourselves because of the amount of crims with them.

I personally do not hope we go down that path here as I think it ends up extremely dangerous for everyone.

Not all police have guns here. My cousin is a cop and i know he doesnt wear one. Im not sure but i think only certain cops have them ie if its believed the cops will be in danger then specialised police forces with guns are used.

God only knows who would have chutzpah in London to do that to the dear young ones that are having the time of their lives! Martial Law would have to be imposed & they don't seem to have the wit to do anything constructive.

Seems like no matter what the police do they'll be roundly criticized. Firing less lethal rounds (plastic bullets, rubber bullets, beanbag rounds, etc). can still result in injury or death. Considering this all started from the apprehension of someone in illegal possession of a firearm I'd imagine it's safer for the police to just let it happen.

It's certainly not Churchill's England any more. As an admirer of England and something of a student of history this makes me sad, but there it is.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."
--Winston Churchill

The problem is here now the kids can do as they like :( Kids cant be smacked...schools cant really do anything any more..and kids know whatever they do there safe and now this happens :( I actually think it would be a good idea to make kids do a years national service to try and get some sort of respect into some of them.

Journalists and photographers being beaten up and cameras smashed, only big news outlets have security.

OT I was working in Notting Hill at carnival time, there was a disturbance and we had to have letters proving we were nurses going to work, otherwise everyone was being sent away. This was in the 80's, I saw riot police, was young and found it exciting.

I am not sure who would have the guts to do it but it needs to be done, this seems to be spiralling out of control
