Couldnt they impose some sort of emergency curfew and anyone milling around just arrest them for the night? At least it would clear the streets somewhat.

I did the young australian thing of backpacking in the early 90's and lived and worked in london for 2 years......I absolutley loved london and this has really upset me......I lived in clapham junction and one of my best pommy friends is in croydon. I already know the type of people that would be involved in these riots, I dealt with them every day working in stockwell. To me if these people dont want to live within societies rules like the rest of us do, then take them out of society............I really hope the legal system uses this as an example and alot of these thugs end up in jail for a long time.
One thing that is very disturbing to me is the use of guns over there now. When I left the police did not have guns and I actually thought the amount of killings was very very low for a city of that size as compared to cities of the same size in america. I have heard that guns are now more of a big problem with the crims and the police now have them. That scares me. We are having the same thing here, crims are getting the guns.
For the americans on here, I do understand why you have guns to protect yourselves because of the amount of crims with them.
I personally do not hope we go down that path here as I think it ends up extremely dangerous for everyone.
I totally agree and just said as much to my daughter. Emergency curfew and possibly get the army in??? I don't know the legalities of it all
Something needs to be done stat

Seems like no matter what the police do they'll be roundly criticized. Firing less lethal rounds (plastic bullets, rubber bullets, beanbag rounds, etc). can still result in injury or death. Considering this all started from the apprehension of someone in illegal possession of a firearm I'd imagine it's safer for the police to just let it happen.
It's certainly not Churchill's England any more. As an admirer of England and something of a student of history this makes me sad, but there it is.

can't they send in the military?
or is that something that "isn't done" over there?
The prescience of Burgess was uncanny.
