UK - London's Burning - Tottenham Riots, August 2011

can't they send in the military?

or is that something that "isn't done" over there?

Back in 2009 the Express treated with this issue just before the G20 Summit in London:

Last night Scotland Yard vowed it was ready to face any threat. A source said: “We do have a policing plan in place and we have riot police officers trained for such measures.”

Were that to be the case, the Government has a contingency plan to deploy troops on the streets of Britain’s major cities.

A senior source said: “This is a very real, and very serious, problem.

“I can tell you there have been crisis talks in Whitehall about this.

“Half the senior officers in Britain have been warning the Home Secretary about the dangerous effects that reducing police manpower may have this summer, especially in the industrial heartlands.

“We are not just talking about the problems of immigration and British jobs for British worker. We are also talking about mass unemployment.

“In many of our industrial cities, this will not be measured in the hundreds, but in the thousands. With unemployment, comes the risk of increased crime. Some forces, such as South Wales, have publically stated they would be swamped.

“Others are keeping it quiet, but you can be sure they are trying to make the Home Secretary listen, before it’s too late.”

This is so sad!! I was over in the UK two years ago to visit my sister. We took my nephews to the Cadbury factory in Birmingham and the we also had a sisters weekend down in London. I loved Soho and the entire west end!! Hoping things calm down over there across the pond and all UK members stay safe!!

Images of burning buildings, cars aflame and stripped-out shops may provide spectacular fodder for a restless media, ever hungry for new stories and fresh groups to demonise, but we will understand nothing of these events if we ignore the history and the context in which they occur.
Excellent article; much more at sherbetjello's Guardian link above.

TV4 have a funny sense of humour, they're showing #aclockworkorange while droogs are setting fire to #London, #Birmingham & #Liverpool

One would have thought a programming change might be indicated.

In some of the videos I have seen it appears there is a helicopter doing circles over the riot areas. I wonder if this is a TV chopper and where is all of the video from that.

It surprises me we aren't seeing more user contributed video at sites like Liveleak.

Forgive me if this sounds ignorant, as I have zero knowledge of London, but don't most of the youth there have cell phones with cameras and computers? Can anybody explain why we aren't seeing a lot more video clips and by MSM especially? There is no censorship there right?

Most kids have mobile phones and pcs here yes. There is no censorship here no but...remember there running from area to area and in some cases there are no cops around to stop anything. Its not safe for people to stand there filming the situation - one reporter was filming it on his iphone and these people went to him to try and get his phone and then chased him for it and he had to run for refuge to a nightclub. These people are trying to grab anything that moves...and they have weapons..its very dangerous out there :(

um...

And where were all these unhappy people during the Royal Wedding? In school? Wasn't that a holiday?

:waitasec:

What difference does 2 months makes?

Asked with respect, and apologetic but obvious ignorance...

I'm just guessing that for the unemployed the Royal Weddling wasn't a holiday atmosphere. What we saw on TV was the positive side of events.

This reminds me so much of the riots in the US after MLK was assassinated. One would think the UK would call in the military, although 16 minutes ago Yahoo news reported there were no plans to do so. I can't see how they can just let hoodlums continue to destroy and loot homes and business.
