Riot police may use baton rounds tonight
• Police have disclosed that live baton rounds - non-lethal plastic bullets - may be deployed tonight. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Kavanagh of the Metropolitan police told our crime correspondent, Sandra Laville: "If we need to, we will do so." He said 525 people have been arrested since rioting began on Saturday, and about 100 have been charged.
• David Cameron has announced that 16,000 police officers will be deployed in London tonight, in an effort to get a grip on the violence. This is up from 6,000 the night before. The prime minister promised a tough response to any trouble tonight: "I have this very clear message to those people who are responsible for this wrongdoing and criminality: you will feel the full force of the law. If you are old enough to commit these crimes you are old enough to face the punishments."

Great...that will flame them up ever more. Never mind the fact had he not been involved it couldnt have happened :(

We can't be too quick to judge, I can find no MSM on this but I heard that he was shot when rioters tried to carjack his car and he resisted

I just heard this on FOX National but they did not say whether he was involved or not. They also said with the 500+ arrested so far that the holding cells of the jails were bursting, with very little room left for more.

ITA that this is being used as an excuse to plunder, loot and cause chaos. Such a shame.

Water Cannon Update:

As police were slammed for appearing to let looters run riot under their noses, {Home Secretary] Mrs May instead advocated a more softly-softly approach.

She said: 'The way we police in Britain is not through use of water cannon. The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.'

much more, with the usual great Daily Mail pics at link.

---

Also, more on the moxie of the North London Turkish community, same DM link:

In Dalston and Hackney, north-east London, Turkish shopkeepers and their families fought back against looting youths, before spending the night standing shoulder-to-shoulder in an attempt to deter further attacks.

One man said: 'This is Turkish Kurdish area. They come to our shops and we fight them with sticks.'

um...

And where were all these unhappy people during the Royal Wedding? In school? Wasn't that a holiday?

:waitasec:

What difference does 2 months makes?

Asked with respect, and apologetic but obvious ignorance...

The Met and City presence in London during the Royal Wedding days was huge, I'm sure, with reinforcements drawn in great numbers from other areas of England and Wales - as protecting royalty is deemed, by the status quo, to be infinitely more important than protecting commoners and their neighborhoods. This argues, of course, for republican hopes and means.

To be fair that wasnt the situation at all. There were groups of muslims who said they was gonna protest and not just that...with all those people there...and so many heads of states and different Royal families from around the world...it was a massive risk that someone could try and lay a bomb..the publicity they would have gotten would be unheard of :(

Ah - the Mayor of London clutching a broom - tears in my eyes for laughter at this comic relief. Go Red Ken.

Nevertheless - royalty were protected, commoners are not. Not arguing against the former; all should be protected, each of us is human. Arguing in favor of the latter, the matter of whose protection would seem an inconvenience to those on holiday.

The commoners were protected there though...the cops were out and about in force all that day where the crowds were and long after the Royals were out of the way. We have what we call Special Constables here..which basically are people that have full time jobs maybe...and work as constables at nights or weekends or in there holidays. I dont know maybe unemployed people do this also and it would have been many of these people that were out there the Royal Wedding weekend. Most events that are laid on here do have a heck of a lot of cops here in fairness.

Granted they were during the royal festivities. I'm concerned with these last three nights.

A salute to the bravery of those doing their utmost to protect shopkeepers and citizens - reinforcements still said to be "pouring in from the north"; I hope the streets are made safe soon.

I was just talking to my cousin about this whose a cop. He is actually pretty mad cause he and 10 friends were meant to be going to Wembley tomorrow to watch a football m atch which is now cancelled cause of this. Well his facebook status is

"Politicians talk, Police do. Very proud of the Police in extremely tough circs. Still wise to cut Police pay, numbers and conditions?"`

In fairness if they keep cutting police numbers..maybe its not there fault totally that there having problems at the moment? Maybe its something the government need to be thinking about right now :(

Yes! Agreed across the board. Police, good ones, are worth their weight in gold - theirs is the most important service position in any society. (With nurses and teachers next in the rankings.) These riots were known to be just awaiting the trigger event; sadly, Mr Duggan's death provided it - AND YET their numbers were cut, thus cutting protections for the ordinary citizen.

@ the 4:00pm mark, Guardian has coverage of the Mayor's appearance in Clapham Junction today; in part:

Straining to make his voice heard over the heckling, he thanked everybody who had come to clear up.

"That is the real spirit of London," he said, before telling those who owned a shop or business in the area "how very sorry I am for the loss and damage you have suffered".

But the local people gathered refused to be placated by his words shouting over him: "What happened?" and "where were the police?"

much more, as always, from the Grauniad here.
