UK - London's Burning - Tottenham Riots, August 2011

Completely and utterly disgusting!!!! Wow - they help him up and then dig through his backpack and steal whatever they want.

How did this guy get hurt? There was a lot of blood on the sidewalk when he stood up - I sure hope someone stopped and helped him get to a hospital (and didn't rob him again).

Society and civilization as a whole is sinking to very low levels. People are desperate - and that seems to allow them to put their morals and values aside. GREED. Horrible.

I hope all our English members stay safe.

All of this is just so unnecessary. Bring in the military - wonder how these thugs would react if big azz huge tanks started rolling down the streets? Think they would scatter then. They are just like packs of wild dogs - separate one or a few from the pack and they put their tails between their legs and wimper - as well they should.

ETA: I was quoting For the Kids link of the video she just posted. Don't know why it didn't quote it.

the other thing is people say send in the army...but they have been cut also :(

Here in the States we'd send in the National Guard, which is a hedge against sending in actual active federal forces - unconstitutional, that. The Guard is state-based although it can be and is, on occasion, called to national duty; so that avoids the strictures of the Constitution. Still, as our laws and conventions are ultimately based in English common law, there are those who feel even this use of force to be, as I said, unconstitutional. As I'm sure there is in Britain among those who would oppose sending the army into such situations.

5.25pm: BREAKING: The Independent Police Complaints Commission has just announced that there is no evidence that Mark Duggan opened fire at police officers before he was shot dead, according to ballistic test results, reports the Press Association.

Guardian

ETA:

• The bullet lodged in the police radio is a "jacketed round". This is a police issue bullet and, while it is still subject to DNA analysis, it is consistent with having been fired from a Metropolitan police Heckler and Koch MP5 submachine gun.

• The firearm found at the scene was a converted BBM "Bruni" self-loading pistol. This is not a replica; the scientist considers it to be a firearm for the purposes of the Firearms Act and a prohibited weapon and is therefore illegal.

• The handgun was found to have a "bulleted cartridge" in the magazine, which is being subject to further tests.

• At this stage there is no evidence that the handgun found at the scene was fired during the incident. The FSS has told the IPCC that it may not be possible to say for certain; however further tests are being carried out in an attempt to establish this.

There was a post upthread about showing the all the pics on one site and having people id the looters. Looking at some of these pics, they are really clear. If one of my kids had done this, I would be the first one to call the cops and say that's my son/daughter and s/he should be at home in 15 minutes. Please come get him ... My heart goes out to everyone in London and surrounding areas that are getting hit by this violence.

4.41pm: Our colleagues Lisa O'Carroll and Caroline Davies have been looking at the dangers facing journalists and photographers who are trying to cover the riots.

One war reporter, who has just returned from the frontline in Libya, was mugged by three hooded looters outside Curry's in Brixton on Sunday night with £2,500 worth of video equipment stolen.

Another photographer was kicked to the ground and beaten by four youths on the Pembury Estate in Hackney yesterday while in Birmingham two photographers being mugged, one suffering a vicious attack by an angry mob of more than a dozen.

A video journalist in Tottenham needed 10 stitches after an angry mob broke into his home and started bashing him with bottles left in his hallway for recycling.

A Mail on Sunday photographer had £8,000 worth of equipment robbed by a gang during what was described as a "lawless" scene near Bruce Grove in Tottenham.

Guardian reporter Paul Lewis who has been covering riots late into the night says photographers and journalists are being set upon despite their best efforts not to stand out.

Anyone even taking pictures with mobile phones was liable to be confronted and asked if they were "feds", said Lewis.

The Isle of Wight??

Not to worry. The video link shows a bird hopping into a store, then hopping out with a bag of crisps, it looks like.

A bit of humor to mitigate the tensions.
