Does the Jury have to justify each verdict in writing?

That would explain their requests to the Judge.

  • #682
If jury have been deliberating for 8 days (not including break days) and were asking for agreed statements on Child H today, to be re-read by the judge, then is it possible they have agreed to indicatively spend 1 day on each case, (A-H over 8 days) which means 6 days of further deliberation to reach case N? If that is number of days deliberated so far (haven't been following closely), I anticipate 4 August, Friday to be a crunch-date, if not before.

This is because as a heuristic, we could say they may have loosely set out to spend different times for each case based on complexity and charge number or severity, but averaging out as 1 day per child case (all charges).

14-15 days of deliberation gives three weeks to have deliberated, a round number.

I think we are certainly more than 50% of the way through the process.

Having said that, I think the verdict may be sooner.

This is because I have carried out some research (admittedly using chat gpt) and developed the prompts given to chat gpt to produce the following table. The table (purportedly?) shows trials of considerable length, and/or heinousness for want of better words.

For the data that was found, the longest deliberation was 8 days for the Phone Hacking scandal, followed by 6 days for Shipman. Again, I have not cross-checked these numbers, so they are not in any way quality assured, I've just engineered the prompts and tidied the presentation a little in excel.

Although the evidence and charges might have been a lot more clear in the trials listed, the data below does tend towards the idea of shortish deliberations, even in very serious matters. However, this cannot be read as a true average because of the potential for data error from chat gpt.

This cannot then be used either as evidence to suggest a relationship between trial length (also shown) against deliberations, but if one were to attribute the idea of a relationship or association that even extremely lengthy trials, and those involving SKs are generally deliberated on for <8 days, this would tell us where the Letby trial would be now - and it would then be associated with crunch-time, or beyond.

What if it's 32 hours & 15 minutes? Do I still win? Heh heh.
Whoever is closest to the total time, between two guesses.

Does the Jury have to justify each verdict in writing?

That would explain their requests to the Judge.
No - the jury does not have to justify any decision they arrive at. This is the whole reason why the process is secret - so they can't be called out and questioned on any verdict they arrive at.

No, nothing is disclosed at all about how they deliberated or reached verdicts.

I think it needs to be pointed out, that the jury in the case of the the guy convicted of murdering Jill Dando (Barry George) actually got it wrong as he eventually had his conviction quashed.

I don't know about anyone else but I have this strange and mixed feeling. The case is drawing to a close and I've spent 9 months pretty much hyperfixating on it. Life has been tough this past year and coming here, discussing this case and learning has been an odd comfort. I know this may sound bizarre considering the tragic case itself and I do feel deeply for the parents but it feels quite a strangely sad empty feeling.

Saying all of this I'm very much firm in my own personal convictions of LL and I just hope the jury are of similar mind. All irrelevant thoughts of course.

This is a farewell song my friend.
It is nostalgic and beautiful.

I will remember you fondly.
I think of you all as friends, although some were annoying haha.
