UK - Scarlett Vickers (14) stabbed to death at home in Darlington. Parents charged with murder (5 July '24)

From piecing together bits from the above articles - in MOO I think the parents had been drinking leading to the late night meal, Scarlett had thrown the grapes at her father and he reacted badly and was threatening her with the knife, and probably misjudged how near he was. (100% not defending him). On the other hand he could be a horrible nasty bully that regularly gestured with knives if he wasn't hsppy. There are usually some truths sprinkled in amongst what is said. Again MOO

Alcohol might have been a factor in this tragedy.
I wonder if Police tested the parents with breathalyzer that fateful night.

From the Gazette Live link I posted earlier:

The court heard Sarah Hall then said she'd taken the knife out to cut the garlic bread. He picked the spatula up at the same time and did not realise the knife was with it.

"The defendant then said we were kind of intoxicated. We'd been drinking wine, having a nice day, watching football, making tea and 🤬🤬🤬cking about. What the 🤬🤬🤬🤬."

A father fatally stabbed his 14-year-old daughter during a play-fight in their kitchen, a court has heard.
Scarlett Vickers suffered a 4in (11cm)-deep wound to her chest and "bled to death" at her family home in Darlington in July, Teesside Crown Court was told.
Her parents Simon Vickers and Sarah Hall told police the family were "mucking about" as they normally did and throwing food and utensils at each other while making dinner in the kitchen.
Absolutely MENTAL!

This is insane. I can't imagine what this poor girl's life was life. :(

4in (11cm)-deep wound to her chest. Think about that. Measure that out.

I cannot accept that this was some drunken accident. I simply can't. Maybe if he wound was an inch or two. but FOUR, passing through the ribs, to pierce Scarlett's heart.
If she ran/walked/jumped/lunged into the knife while he was firmly holding it, I can.

Nearly at midnight with a minor child
Phew!
It was summer, a Saturday night, Scarlett would have had only 2 weeks left of school before summer holidays. Dad said they watched football, it was Euros 2024 - they probably watched Portugal - France at 3 pm and then Spain - Germany at 5 pm.

Kids are often up late, let alone teenagers. I don't see anything weird about her being up and spending time with her parents/wanting to eat at that time.

And I see something really "weird" (quoting OP) in this particular situation.

A dead child :(
With a knife sticking out of her heart.
At family home which should be a safe haven for any child

Flying knives - out of order, with anyone at any time

It could be ‘ accidental’ in as much that Scarlett was not the intended victim, but intervened between her parents.

However I don’t think it could be termed an ‘ accidental death’ if you are drunk, wielding a kitchen knife & attempting to stab another person!

Tragic? Yes. Accident? Obviously not. But whether the court can prove that or not I don’t know.

Also forensics said he would have had to use some force to get that knife so deep in her chest, so I highly doubt it was a playful throw, more like a violent straight forward stab.

If scarlet wasn’t the intended victim then I can’t understand why the mother is defending him.

I could believe it being some sort of tragic accident.....but none of his stories make any sense. It's actually quite difficult to stab someone in the heart....you know ribcages and all! So he billy bull pooping. Moo

It was my theory from the start that the poor girl was the intended victim.

Who knows what was going on in this household of people who
"kept themselves to themselves" :(

RIP to the victim who was robbed of life at such young age.

I've not seen any further updates since day 1 of trial

Found this, published today. Not too much new info, other than the pathologist's detail and her being cross examined

Forensic pathologist Jennifer Bolton concluded the knife was being held "tightly" with a firm grip when it injured Scarlett.

Dr Bolton said the knife passed between two ribs and pierced through a lung into her heart causing major blood loss and would have required only mild force to penetrate so deep.

She said Scarlett would have fallen unconscious and died within minutes of the blow.

Under cross-examination by Mr Vicker's barrister Nicholas Lumley KC, Dr Bolton said
Scarlett could have survived had the knife gone a millimetre or two either side of where it ended up.
