US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

I've been curious about Canada's response to US aggression against the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland. Canada will land on the side of Greenland, which means in opposition to the United States. If NATO collapses, I think that the Coalition of the Willing will fill the gaps.

Mark Carney was in Taiwan and China to secure trade deals with Canada last week, and is now in Qatar to secure investment in Canada. He wraps up his trip in Davos, Switzerland next week. After that, I expect he will address the United States problem in Greenland more directly.

"Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is "concerned" about U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose increasing tariffs on several European countries until they accede to his demand to purchase and control Greenland.

"We're concerned about this escalation," Carney told reporters at a press conference in Doha, Qatar on Sunday morning. "We always will support sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries wherever their geographic location is."

"Decisions about the future of Greenland are for Greenland and Denmark to decide."
...

When asked whether Canada is working on a proposal to contribute Canadian forces on the ground, Carignan said Canada is "always working closely with our Danish partner."

"There's definitely a lot of interest in Arctic security from a NATO perspective as well, and we will work together to do that," Carignan said."

Retaliatory tariffs on US goods to come into effect on 6 February - diplomat

An EU diplomat has said €93 billion worth of suspended retaliatory tariffs on US goods will automatically come into effect on 6 February.

European Council President Antonio Costa said EU leaders would meet in the coming days to discuss US President Donald Trump's tariffs threat over Greenland.

"Given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days," he posted on social media.

Trump is supposedly going to Davos. Should be really great there.

"Given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days," he posted on social media.

In a CBC video I linked yesterday (linked somewhere upthread) the EU-US trade/tariffs deal was agreed last July, but is not yet approved by EU parliament on the basis that some felt it was lopsided in favour of the US. Now that agreement is suspended, and France is asking to curb US imports.

"The three “pro-European” groups in the European Parliament are putting the approval procedure for the trade agreement between the EU and the United States on hold as long as the American president Donald Trump threatens to annex Greenland.
...

The announcement is also being met with astonishment in the European Parliament. The three “pro-European” groups in the European Parliament (EPP, S&D and Renew) have meanwhile announced that they will temporarily put the approval of the trade agreement between the EU and the US on hold.

“The EPP is in favor of the trade agreement, but given Donald Trump’s threats over Greenland, approval is not possible at this time,” wrote the chairman of the largest group in Parliament, Manfred Weber, on Saturday on X. “The zero tariffs on American products must be suspended.”

"French President Emmanuel Macron will ask the EU to activate its "anti-coercion" measure – dubbed its trade “bazooka” – for the first time ever if US President Donald Trump follows through with threats to impose new tariffs on European countries for opposing his plans for Greenland. An extraordinary meeting of EU ambassadors has been called for Sunday afternoon in Brussels.
...

The bloc's weapon – never-before used and dubbed its trade "bazooka" – allows for curbing imports of goods and services."
...

Ambassadors from the European Union's 27 countries will convene on Sunday for an emergency ‍meeting to discuss the tariffs."

That, I would agree with! That is the question that has been on the table since Trump was elected. Why doesn't anyone react?

Here is some of what they are trying to do ... but I think that Trump has veto power, unless a specific voting majority is reached.

In Congress, bipartisan bills have been introduced in both the House and Senate that would prohibit the use of appropriated funds for any military action against a NATO ally—including against Danish and other European forces defending Greenland.

Whether those bills could capture a veto-proof majority is not clear, but public support among Americans for annexing Greenland is low (17 percent support annexation and only 4 percent support doing so through use of force).

I can't imagine that Carney is feeling too spry about the possibility of the US taking over Greenland.

Geographically that would leave Canada sandwiched between two US places. Then what is next?

Sunday 18 January 2026
President Donald Trump is reportedly turning his attention to Canada and becoming fixated on the country’s “vulnerability” to foreign adversaries.

Trump’s recent focus on Canada follows a whirlwind first year in office, marked by bold unilateral moves to extend U.S. influence across the Western Hemisphere — often through thinly veiled military threats, an approach he has branded the “Donroe Doctrine.”

A Pew Research poll from July found that the majority of Canadians now see Trump’s America as their biggest threat.

Carney himself appeared to hint at this breakdown in relations on Friday, telling reporters that the “multilateral system” has been “eroded.”

More about Canada and participation in ongoing military exercises in the Arctic.

"Prime Minister Mark Carney is considering sending soldiers to Greenland for military exercises with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies, as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens tariffs on European nations unless they let him purchase and control the semiautonomous island.

Two senior Canadian officials have told CBC News that a set of contingency plans were drawn up last week and presented to the federal government.

A Royal Canadian Air Force contingent is already taking part in a pre-planned NORAD exercise in Greenland, but the prime minister is weighing whether to send additional forces as part of sovereignty exercises the Danes are planning, which could include drills to protect the Arctic island's critical infrastructure.
...

While the nations involved are all members of NATO, the sources emphasized, joining the Danish exercise would be outside the western military alliance's framework — much like the efforts to help Ukraine have fallen to the coalition of the willing."

We are! <modsnip>It might be true that Americans are more concerned with the internal invasion: they don't like armed loyalists deployed in cities that the president doesn't like thinly disguised as immigration enforcement. Its understandable to me that there is a more visceral reaction to invasions to American neighborhoods then to a territory by the North Pole.

Also, misinformation has slowed Americans from understanding the personal harm tariffs are doing them. But prices just keep rising, and the affordability crisis just keeps growing in this country. So soon, more Americans, even those with no skin in the game regarding Greenland, will start to resist the president's trade wars.

I was just reading about this in our Aussie news.

"France’s President Emmanuel Macron will ask the EU to activate a never-before-used “anti-coercion instrument” against the US if Mr Trump makes good on his tariff threat, Mr Macron’s aides said.

The bloc’s weapon – dubbed its trade “bazooka” – allows for curbing imports of goods and services into the EU, a market of 27 countries with a combined population of 450 million."

Listening to Starmer's speech and the questions afterwards. Nice speech emphasizing alliances, Greenland's self-determination etc, and friends can disagree but still work together. 🤷‍♀️ It's mind-blowing to realise how far the US has fallen wrt complete sentences and civility. That said, it's the same old thing with Starmer not giving any real consequences to Trump. You can't just say "It'll be bad for us if you do that, please don't". The world must start pushing back.

"Mounting tensions between Europe and the United States moved into the sporting arena on Sunday when a member of the crowd shouted “Leave Greenland alone” as the US national anthem was sung during an NBA game in London.

The intervention drew a round of applause and cheers from sections of the crowd."

"Greenland’s dogsled federation said that the new US special envoy to the Arctic island had been disinvited to its annual race, as Washington repeatedly threatens to take over the autonomous Danish territory

Jeff Landry had been invited to attend the race by a private Greenlandic tour operator, an invite the KNQK federation has previously called “totally inappropriate”.

“KNQK has been informed that the tourism company that invited Governor Jeff Landry from the United States has unilaterally withdrawn its invitation” .... “This is reassuring”

Landry said last week he was planning to come to Greenland in March."
