How fast does someone think a police officer can conduct a psychological assessment on a subject heading toward him with a large knife?

I did follow your link to the database and tried to filter results by Native American race. We do not exist, apparently. We are invisible.

When I was looking for those links the saddest part was every update to the statistics was attached to a different case - Zachary Bearheels, Loreal Tsingine, Paul Castaway. As if every time a Native American is killed by a cop they pull up the same stories and numbers, but what happens in between shootings? :(

Then why do we never hear of cops killing white children? They don't hesitate to kill minority children. And where was this cop's taser? Where were his de-escalation techniques? He went directly to murdering a child. No other adults around. GTFO with "he just wanted to defend himself!"

Here is the post I’m referring to blue sneakers. [emoji1360]

Native Americans most likely ethnic group to be killed by police

Media coverage in the US is rare. There were 29 Native Americans killed between 1 May 2014 and 31 October 2015, yet only one death received significant coverage within the circle of the top 10 US newspapers. That case was Paul Castaway, a Rosebud Sioux man from Denver who was shot dead after he threatened suicide. Another man was incorrectly defined as Latino.

27 of those deaths received no coverage.

Invisible.

I don’t know why my post keeps quoting katy. It was honey who I should be quoting in regards to us never hearing about white teens getting killed by cops.

Can you link to it? I don't recall anyone saying white teens are not killed by cops.

I quoted it a couple posts above. It looks like it’s Katydid that I’m quoting for some reason, but she’s not the one who posted that.

I have been to that reservation. My heart is in pieces. As a former resident of MN which is right next to Wisconsin, I can tell you the prejudice against Native Americans is revolting.

My friend who is now dead objected years ago to the elementary text book which stated that nativew were dirty and lazy. That is what the chuldren learned.

He was white and almost lost his job for demanding that the textbook be removed. He did prevail after putting his whole career on the line . He had four cnildren that were in his family.

I know I sound like a broken record, but the police where I lkve never kill anyone. Not because the citizens are not violent or have no issues. It simply is not how they treat people. Strange how other countries ,and especially look at Europe, do not kill their cotizens. How can that be?

The kid had a knife and at his weight, I doubt if he was an Olympic sprinter.

Racism, Yes, ugly ugly racism. And if someone is not a believer, come to MN or WI and check it out for yourself. It makes me positively ill because I have many Native friends. All I can say is tears and grrrrrrrrr!

Native Americans Get Shot By Cops at an Astonishing Rate

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/07/native-americans-getting-shot-police/#

“This is a reflection of an endemic problem in the perception of non-white people when it comes to the administration of justice,” Chase Iron Eyes, an attorney with the Lakota People’s Law Project in South Dakota, told Mother Jones. The group put out a report called “Native Lives Matter” in February discussing various ways the justice system disproportionately impacts Native Americans. He said the US Department of Justice needs to address police violence against Native Americans and that Castaway’s death is only the most recent example of the problem.

“You can tell they’re shooting out of fear,” he said. “If it’s not out of hate, for some reason they’re pulling the trigger before determining what the situation actually is. Something does need to happen. Somebody does need to take a look and we need help.”

Something has to give, somewhere. Something needs to happen. Better vetting of police recruits, better, more suitable training, more psychological screening (is there any now?), better community relationships between the police and civilians; cultural teachings so cops may better understand minorities (or anyone in the areas they patrol).

I grieve for this boy, my Native friends and relatives grieve for this boy and for his family. It didn't have to happen this way.

Wasn't there a case exactly like this summer of 2017?

I do support police very much so and it’s probably because I have so many family members and close friends who are in LE. However, that’s not why I am so adamant about defending them in these cases. It’s bc people automatically turn it into a racial issue, when our country is in a state of racial tension. I’ve posted multiple cases where white teens were killed by cops, hell, I even posted the Wapo directory for anyone to filter thru the civilian gunshot deaths by cops. But none of my posts get acknowledged. Instead the people who say “well how come cops don’t kill white people” are thanked and cited. It’s just frustrating because there is a lot of misinformation spread. Unfortunately, when white people are killed by LE, justified or not, there isn’t a group rallying for justice for the deceased the way BLM does. I’m trying to tread as lightly as possible and am not looking to offend anyone.

I see your "our country is in a state of racial tension" and raise you with a "gun problem" and an "LE training problem." This was a child crying out for help and the people we pay, with our tax dollars to protect and serve, killed him.

Second degree murder: http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/second-degree-murder-overview.html
Second Degree Murder: Definition
Second-degree murder is ordinarily defined as: 1) an intentional killing that is not premeditated or planned, nor committed in a reasonable "heat of passion"; or 2) a killing caused by dangerous conduct and the offender's obvious lack of concern for human life. Second-degree murder may best be viewed as the middle ground between first-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

With or without training?

I had a professor who was a clinical psychologist who used to do ride-a-longs with local police and ems. The role in the ride-a-long was to do quick assessments of the mental health status of the person in question in order to guide the intervention and help the person understand what was going to happen. Don't forget that people with mental illness are often told to call 911 to get help...... but many have been harmed by police who do not have the "training" to get them to acquiesce and consent to treatment. It is very hard to have the police coming in with yelling and commands as you may be unable to understand what is happening versus what you are hallucinating.

Normally suicide is considered a tragedy. In this case, it seems like people are saying a 14 year old boy had it coming. Too bad. He deserved it. How horrible is that?

Of course it’s a tragedy. A 14 year old may think life will never get better, but it does. If only he had a crystal ball to see what his future held and the good times that were ahead of him.

It’s also sad for the officer who shot him, now that I am sure people will be saying less than favorable things about him. I am sure he is going through a lot emotionally right now. I imagine shooting someone, especially a teen, who was in such a bad mental place that he wanted the police to carry out his suicide for him, is much different (emotionally) than shooting, say, a perp who just raped someone. Being such a tight-knit community it seems to me that whoever called the cops in the first place should have known if the 14 year old had mental problems and informed the dispatcher of that.

He called the cops and reported a description of himself. A 300 lb man walking down the street with a knife.

Does that particular Reservation have Tribal police? If so wouldn't it be their jurisdiction? Has the 911 call been released and was the cop's body cam switched on?
