Nope. You can sign the paperwork and change your mind, or they can cancel your contract at any point prior to you signing the final paperwork on the day you ship out.

Once you reach boot camp, there is a period of time during processing, in which you can confess to any lies you told when you enlisted.

At this point, you are likely to be sent home, depending on the seriousness of your lies.

Once boot camp officially starts, you can be kicked out for any number of reasons, from medical issues (especially previously unreported ones), and for “failure to adapt.”

I think he may have enlisted, but never shipped out. Or when he shipped out, he didn’t last long.

I don’t think he served.
What do you think he could have learned that would have been beneficial to commit this crime?

If he had “people” or “friends” come over, IMO, they must have driven as it looks like a long walk to anywhere. I am surprised no one noticed cars going in/out drive even if house cannot be seen from street. I bet there were not many visitors.

Also who was getting any active utility bills? Were the bills sent to parents location or to the actual house he was in? If to the parents why were they not questioning the higher usage and bill, unless they knew he was there. If sent to the house, IMO, he was throwing away the bills....until utilities were turned off.

Not sleuthing, but was his brother living there Too? In was remarked the brothers once lived there together.

I hope he pleads guilty.....but not much hope in that.

In no particular order:

- brother moved out of state several years ago. See Fox report about that. (I’ll try and find & link it again). There is nothing to show so far that brother has been anywhere near the property/home or lived there recently.

- the reports of people in & out of/visiting the house while JC was held there are not yet substantiated by LE (although I do believe there were some visitors) and there were very few full-time neighbours around to ‘clock’ activity around the house.

If one looks at the pictures (aerial views only at the moment) of the property, I can see how JC could have been concealed or sequestrated there without any visitors being aware.

The neighbourhood - for want of a better word - is mostly made up of vacation/seasonal properties. Some of which may be rented out (seasonally), IMO. Various vehicles going in and out may not have raised red flags to locals.

- I’m not sure that it matters, in the big picture, who was receiving and/or paying utility bills. According to Sheriff’s statement in yesterday’s 4pm press conference, there was electricity & water in the property.

One thing that keeps bothering me (ie serial killer). Has he done this before? The sheriff stated that JP shaved his head as a way of leaving no evidence. That makes me think a shaved head was not the norm for JP. What bothers me and please someone correct me if I am wasting my thoughts on this; JP's head was also shaved in a pic from 2015. Is it coincidence or has he done/practiced/tried this before? Just my thoughts based on mere speculation.

ETA link to article with sheriff statement and pic of JP with shaved head: https://heavy.com/news/2019/01/jake-thomas-patterson-why-motive/

I don't think the shaved head was done specifically to avoid detection as all photos I've seen of JP show him with a shaved head going back many years. I think during the investigation that LE was truly stumped as to how there was zero DNA evidence left behind and Fitzgerald is now like "DOH! He shaved his head".

I read so many articles last night and don’t remember which one it was in but the teacher who had Jayme in her house said that Jayme told them that JP told her he was leaving and would be back around midnight. Jayme took that opportunity to escape. I think it’s very interesting that he was apprehended so quickly after that. Makes me wonder if he was on his way to somewhere or if he was just testing her. The same article said they all moved into the basement until police arrived.
Did anyone else see this article for a link-if not I will try to find again

I have posted this link on a few past threads when others asked so here ya' go!

Back with family after escaping abductor, Jayme Closs 'is the hero'

I agree with a lot of what you wrote. This child is particularly strong. And I'm sure she will compel herself to testify to get justice.

However, I disagree that she will march right up there and easily testify. In most cases where child victims of trauma testify they need a lot of psychological help, victim assistance and safeguards to be anywhere close to a position to be able to testify.

Also, I 100% disagree that children are resilient. I think that's something we adults say to comfort ourselves. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of trauma.

Almost every mental illness has roots in childhood trauma even when there are genetic components. Anxiety disorder. Panic disorder. Depression. Bipolar disorder. Narcissistic personality disorder. Histrionic personality disorder. Antisocial personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder. Obsessive compulsive disorder. Alcohol and drug dependency. Etc.

All can stem from childhood trauma.

Children are horrifically destroyed by trauma. They lack the emotional reserves, the cognitive abilities and the maturity and life experience that enables them to cope with such events.

Interestingly, the child you reference was one of psychiatrist Bruce Perry's patients. He wrote the primer (IMO) on childhood trauma.

That kid had extensive therapy in order to be able to get up there and testify, from what I recall, which mostly consisted of her repeatedly positioning the doctor on the floor and simulating hog tying him and slitting his throat, until eventually she gained some semblance of agency and power over the memories of what had been done to her.

IMO, children's "resiliency" to trauma is complex, and not appropriately a black & white, yes or no determination.

Of course children who are subjected to traumatic actions or circumstances fully experience trauma. Young age is no magic shield. IMO, both from experience and from wide exposure/reading about how children try to process the unfathomable, degrees of "resilience" depend upon whether or not a traumatized child receives knowledgeable, constructive, ongoing, loving support.

I'd imagine what potentially will be traumatizing for Jayme is if she believes/was told that her parents were killed because of her, whatever the permutations of that twisted thinking by the murderer/kidnapper.

What do you think he could have learned that would have been beneficial to commit this crime?
Let’s assume that he even made it to boot camp, even then he might not have lasted long enough to fire a gun (around week 6 for Marines IIRC).

He may not have learned anything that would have been beneficial, but that wouldn’t have mattered much.

I think he had a mindset that existed long before he ever thought of potentially enlisting. Any training that he would have received, would have fueled this fantasy.

When this crime occurred, I thought that this wreaked of someone having a military background, as it involved overwhelming force.

His gun skills, which didn’t have to involve specific training, could have come from elsewhere.

This was about how he saw himself, but what he was.

Barron County Sheriff Shares Highs, Lows Of Jayme Closs Search Efforts
Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald spoke with Christiane Cordero on Saturday to share the highs and lows of the search efforts and what he learned along the way.

Authorities spent the day gathering evidence from the Gordon, Wisconsin, home where they say she was held captive, trying to learn more about the person who will be charged with kidnapping her.

“We’ll be looking for receipts and places he went the last 88 days, did he take her anywhere,” Fitzgerald said.

Right now, police have no reason to believe the Closs family knew the arrested suspect, JP, but they do believe Jayme was specifically targeted.

“And obviously the million dollar question is ‘why?’ and we need to find that out either by talking with Jayme or the suspect, but when we find that out we might be able to fill in some of the gaps of the investigation,” Fitzgerald said.

It will take time, as will the healing and the hope of the community he serves.

“Yeah, it’ll be stronger. Now we get to survive and move forward on the will of a 13-year-old girl. We can do anything now,” Fitzgerald said.

To help that process, officials have set up a 211 hotline for people struggling. On Friday, the school superintendent said she plans to throw some kind of a celebration for Jayme, when the time is right.

"She said to us that, 'This person killed my parents and took me,'" Kasinskas told CNN's Poppy Harlow. "She said that this person usually hides her or hides her when others are near, or when he has to leave the household. She did not go into detail about how she got out of the house or anything like that."
The sheriff also said Friday that it appeared Patterson "concealed her from other people ... his friends." The sheriff hasn't elaborated.

Fitzgerald said Saturday that investigators will try to determine, among other things, how Jayme escaped and the conditions in which she was held.

"We're looking for receipts, and where the suspect may have been (besides the Gordon home) over the last 88 days," Fitzgerald said. "Did she go with him to the store? Did he buy clothes for her? Did he buy food?"

Jayme Closs' parents killed because they were 'barrier' to her kidnapping, sheriff says

Edited to remove talk about SA per post below.

I wanted to comment on these photos. It's so great to see them, but I hope someone is working with them on how to proceed. I think it's weird that these photos are in People. I worry about exploitation and also Jayme being a sort of public figure now. Were others, such as Elizabeth Smart, in magazines right after she was found? Maybe I' being overprotective.

Folks, we're all adults; we all know there is a possibility of all sorts of ugly things in these cases. JC is a very young victim who is more than likely extremely traumatized as she has been through a horrendous ordeal. Let's be respectful of not speculating about certain aspects of the investigation. The details are unnecessary and not based on any known fact.

Please just remain victim friendly, and leave comments about possible SA out of the discussion.

Thank You.

If he enlisted there is no turning back is there unless the military dismisses you?? I am curious because I thought it was a done deal once you enlist unless a medical problem is found.

No...you can be discharged for adjustment issues within a certain amount of time from graduating boot....or during boot I assume. It's called an ELS discharge. It's a separation like you never joined the military at all.
Thankfully it doesn't seem he was one of The Few...The Proud.

Back visiting my hometown in WI and some local connections here in law enforcement have been up in Barron helping. Lots of rumors abound but the overall atmosphere here is everyone is so proud of Jayme and her will to survive.

Gut feeling @ JP: as nuts as it sounds (and he sure is nuts): he wanted Jayme to like him

He had long term plans with her....oddly, I think once he had executed his plan, and she was there: he didn't know what to do...I honestly think this...despite the fact he pulled this off: he seems at core: ineffectual and cowardly

It would seem he was not taking care of Jayme's basic hygiene: dirty and matted hair. IMO that tells me quite a bit on many levels....

MOO

Yeah, this guy doesn’t have a solid employment record, unless 1 day counts.

That tells me that he doesn’t play well with others, and probably can’t handle authority.

I agree, he doesn’t seem the type.

He may have tried but failed. If he made it even one day I think he would embellish bragging to his kidnapped victim who is a very naive 13 year old child who wouldn't know any better.

I wouldn't be surprised either if he told her he carried out the murders and kidnapping like a secret mission he pretended he had done in his fantasy long years of military life.

I think he fed her a lot of outlandish lies.

If he planned it it was probably from playing and watching video games.

It seems if he had really served in the military for any length of time the neighbors or others who say they knew the family would have already commented. Plus the media would have found his military photo by now. Imo
