<modsnip - quoted post removed>

I haven’t seen any interviews from her friends, classmates, etc. when Abby & Libby were murdered in Indiana (13 and 14 years old, for those who aren’t familiar with that case) comments from many friends and classmates were included in newspaper articles and television reports.

Did we ever get a timeline for James that night? When he left work?

I just have the suspicion based on where he was found that perhaps someone followed him home or ambushed him as he got home. Seems odd to answer the door at that time of night without knowing who it was ... unless he did know the person?!

We don’t have a timeline, just as we don’t have answers to many of the questions that would help us narrow down our theories.

Answering the door, doesn’t mean that he actually opened it. It just means that he went to the door.

Everyone is different, so it’s impossible to predict what he did, or what he was thinking at the time.

What would seem odd or unsettling to you or I, wouldn’t necessarily have the same effect on someone else.

Do,they train year round, weather permitting?

Lol. No weather permitting. And coaches probsbly are only hired for a time period. Just the sport season.

I don’t know that we have enough information to say that James didn’t get along with the family. There are conflicting reports about whether he was at the party or not, but even if he didn’t attend, or didn’t stay too long, I don’t think that would indicate that he didn’t get along with the family.

If there has been a link to a story that indicated he didn’t spend much time with family I didn’t see it.

There are legitimate reasons James might not have attended the party, although I wonder now if he might have been there for awhile and then left while Jayme and mom stayed.

He could have had errands to run, gone hunting, helped a friend with a project, or watched football. He could have gone to a sports bar or friend’s home to watch football. Or maybe if he did leave the party early he just didn’t care much for parties. I know men who are great dads and get along well with their extended family members but would rather be watching sports than attending a kid’s birthday party.
The birthday party is described as for the Grandson of Sister and child who is likely quite young. I don't think it so odd that James did not attend Sunday afternoon party. This was week 6 of NFL season and there were 13 games played on 10/14. James was reportedly a big football fan and one who loved reliving/telling his own athletic youth. MOO

The middle school XC season runs the same as high school. (My kids raced competitively in Indiana, their cousins did so in Kenosha.) Teams do conditioning training through the summer, with meets going from August to October. Race length- 3K (1.8 miles)

An aside: National XC meets (footlocker - NIKE- USATF- AAU) are held around Thanksgiving- Christmas.) And yes- Track and Field is held spring (March-May)

Riverview (Barron) Middle School Cross Country Statistics - A link to two XC events from her school. NOTE: I did not see JC listed in the race results. This is not unusual. The meets listed were huge and teams can only enter their top seven runners.

There is typically a second race for the “junior varsity” runners, but these are seldom recognized/recorded. (Although the runners still receive place ribbons/medals) As a rule: every runner attends every meet.

Are jv usually high school kids?

My feeling is the perp was known to the family. I just can't figure out why they were murdered and Jayme was not except they must have come for Jayme. I can only think of a few different scenarios that this would fit into.
All of them equal targeted and not random. imo

Usually 9th-10th but can be 8th if the team is extraordinarily small and/or the kid is just extraordinarily good.

Do you have a link for that?
Note from the Editor:

Editor's Note: A previous version of this article stated James Closs was at the family gathering in Barron, Wisconsin on Sunday, October 14. James Closs was not at the family gathering; he was at work.

<modsnip - rumor>

It is possible that the perp came to the house shouting, threatening, etc. - very possible someone they knew.
James was a hunter....he may have told the perp to get lost & fired a couple warning shots (shots neighbors heard).
Perp leaves....they think things are okay, situation diffused.
Perp comes back with a gun....

The one winter I visited Wisconsin they got 21 inches of snow dumped on them in one night. My son is on track and Xcountry. Even though we live in the south, we still get snow and ice. Coach won't let them run on it because he's afraid of injury. We have a three-county indoor track that the whole area uses for training during the winter months.

Exactly. No coach could afford the liability.

Or, unless he didn't answer it. We just don't know.

  1. I live in Connecticut and there are uncanny similarities between this crime and the Petitt family home invasion. The random targeting of the females, the breaking in and incapacitating of the fathers, the escalating brutality. I'm not saying the two are connected because they are not. But, it does show that unplanned, short term targeting of victims and brutal outcome with no apparent motive is more than possible.

True, we have no idea what the circumstances were. I'm still considering the possibility that he heard someone trying to break in, and was trying to prevent them from getting inside. Maybe the perp loosened the metal brackets or whatever the locking mechanism is when he kicked the door and there was a struggle before he actually was able to get the door open. Or he may have opened the door willingly to a stranger asking for help. Or he may have recognized the person and opened the door only to be shot and killed. There seem to be many possibilities. Imo

In general cross country speak, varsity is usually a team's top 7 runners. JV is everyone else. So when it was mentioned that Jayme wasn't always listed in race results because she was probably JV, just means that she wasn't in the Top 7 on her team. Many meets only provide official results for the "varsity" race, especially at the middle school level, although some middle school races are "Open" and everyone runs in the same race. I think it is pretty much the norm for all grades to compete together in middle school (though in IL, they separate races by grade). Some states (MN and NM for example) allow middle school athletes to play for high school teams, but I do not believe that WI is one of them. There is usually no specific age determination for JV or varsity. It really comes down to who is fastest. My MVP this year was a freshman (obviously varsity) and I have a 4 year Sr who was JV. It makes team selection very easy. As we like to say, "the clock doesn't lie".

So really, the answer is that it varies...

The possibilities of who they may “know’ are huge. Friends of neighbors or relatives or people they see or meet casually.

It could be someone who moved away and was back visiting. Or it can be a relative or friend of someone who lives there. Needle in world haystack

My guess is that everyone is probably afraid.
I think you are right. I bet it is tense in the area homes when the Sun goes down every night.

My guess is that everyone is probably afraid.

Yes. Afraid (and tense). There’s also a cultural factor . . . “Wisconsin Nice”. Essesntially, it’s being polite and non-confrontational. (Google it!) People in WI have their own way of going about things and it’s old school values and etiquette. In the recent election for Governor, the campaign commercials were mercenary yet when Walker and Evers debated, it was so civil it put one to sleep. Even keeled. The Sheriff’s mannerisms - perfect example of Wisconsin Nice. Don’t underestimate it, though. :)
