This is probably the most frustrating part of the case for me: Why did Fred visit UMass that weekend and why, prior to his visit, did he haphazardly gather $4,000 in cash to bring with him? Answer those two questions and you get a long way toward figuring out everything else. Fred obviously...

This is an excellent point, I think. Fred certainly had knowledge of Maura's state of mind in the days prior to her disappearance. When told that the car had been found, his knee-jerk leap to suicide is very telling.
