And if VW submitted those retirement papers *a day earlier* and didn't think there might be more processing of them needed, did she really think they wouldn't be able to track her withdrawals, whether the retirement funds were a pension or 401k? Payments would perhaps be direct deposited into a bank account *somewhere* on a regular basis. Or perhaps she chose a one-time lump sum withdrawal of the funds.

Edited to add - last part got omitted above. Meant to add to last sentence - even a one-time lump sum withdrawal, which would be subject to penalties if she isn't 59 1/2 years old, has to go somewhere so you can access the funds!
I'm sure after 25 years of employment there she had to have known that distribution of funds doesn't happen quickly. That is something a long term employee just knows. IMO

Exactly. In government service you don't just drop your retirement paperwork and be retired that day. There is a ton of paperwork, not to mention going here, there and everywhere to turn in weapons, keys, badges, ID cards, access cards, settling your government travel/credit card account, terminating computer access. It just goes on and on and on. I think it took about 3 months for me to "retire" from active duty military and at least 2 months to "retire" from civil service. You don't just walk in with a piece of paper and walk out with a lump sum of money. It doesn't work that way. Even the sheriff in this case announced his retirement in Nov 2021, effective Jan 1, 2023. Even if you are literally dead it's going to take at least a few weeks to get you entirely processed out of the system. IMO

ETA: And even if she dropped her retirement papers on Thursday and walked out with a lump sum of money (impossible in my opinion) how would she have been at work business as usual on Friday?

Wow! I thought they would be captured by now. I wonder what they are going to tell us at the press conference tomorrow ... I would imagine they are keeping things very close to the vest in case VW and CW are watching the news. What a strange situation. On one hand it seems as though VW may have helped CW escape but on the other hand it is so very unbelievable that she would do that - I don't know what to think.

I am curious as to why there is no word from VW's family, friends or co-workers. Perhaps they have all been asked to avoid talking to the media in order to protect the investigation ... still surprised the DM hasn't got something more than ex-mother-in-law but the fact that she talks with VW regularly gives credibility to her statement that she believes VW would never help a murderer escape. All MOO

I wonder what the rules are in terms of being able to have your retirement taken away if you are convicted? Perhaps you can be denied if you haven’t filed yet but not if you have.

She may be assuming she will be caught and serve minimum time.

Who is holding this press conference exactly? If it's the sheriff we won't learn anything, because he doesn't know anything about the investigation. I'm sure the feds have made sure of that.

If it's the USMS or the FBI we might get some actual information. But the feds aren't in the habit of doing press conferences just for the heck of it. My prediction is we will learn exactly nothing. jmo

Page numbers vary widely, depending upon each user's settings (number of posts per page).
Totally. :) Tho I’ve found them to be helpful when cited a number of times (even if I have to tweak my settings). Ultimately, regardless of settings, going back to read the most recent pages often produces the answers someone is wondering about. And saves users from having to re-paste or scroll past info and links just covered in recent pages. Staying current is a beast sometimes tho, right?:)

Ohhhh...a question I can answer! My active duty military retirement can be revoked if I am convicted of something I did while on actual active duty. A crime I did while in the line of duty. I'm good if I commit a civilian crime while formally and officially retired.

Whoa. If that’s the case, that lends more insight…

Thanks for sharing!

I suppose it's likely that she was manipulated into loving him but IMO I think it's just as likely he manipulated her into terror. For example, something such as mentioning the address and physical description of a loved one that he would only know if he had outside eyes on them, or some form of blackmail collateral that he'd gleaned.

CW doesn't appear to have made this plan spontaneously but I think it's possible the decision to act that day may have been spontaneous. He knew that jail, had planned to escape it before by taking a hostage, and had still managed to get himself transferred back to it by admitting to a cold case and then pleading insanity to buy himself time.

I imagine he would also have planned out in detail which hostage he'd take, what schedule they had, what size body, what made them tick, etc etc. Maybe MOO when he heard that his intended target had just put in her retirement papers he had to act quickly before he lost his chance to use whatever information he had acquired that could convince her all she had to do was let him go and everything would be ok.

And IF he DID commit the murder-for-hire, I imagine that would have made whoever hired him very nervous. Maybe nervous enough to help him escape MOO.

Maybe I'm just trying to give VW the benefit of the doubt, but if he's a psychopath then he could use his words in other ways than just love letters to convince her to free him. All MOO

Wow! I thought they would be captured by now....snip
I don't think they're gonna capture him anytime soon. His face looks like a million guys. The only problem he's got is that he's 6'9". He should get himself a wheel chair.
And the Feds are gonna need to do better than $10k to encourage folks to risk messing with this guy.....and they need to put out a BOLO for passengers requesting extra leg room on flights to Mexico....

Well, a Lee, Massachusetts police chief was convicted of extorting about $4,000 from a local business owner in turn for not reporting their prostitution incidents that were supposedly taking place inside their inn. He spent 27 months in federal prison and they revoked his pension. I believe he's now fighting to get it back, citing his crime was too minor to have that revoked. I'm not sure the outcome as I haven't followed it, but here's a link to the initial situation: Ex-Lee police chief hits roadblocks in seeking pension benefits after prison.

I'd think if VW helped to escort out a murderer, hers would be revoked as well over something much more major!

He looks very different in the photos released in the reddish outfit, shorter hair, than the initial photos released with longer hair. The ears, though - very distinct. And of course his height, as you said.

Extra leg room - LOL!

Not that CW and VW are related. The question was about if VW had any family (because normally you might see family publicly appealing for her safe return, etc. But no family has been mentioned in news reports). A DailyMail article today quoted an ex-mother-in-law from when VM was apparently married to a Tommy White almost two decades ago. Her ex-husband passed away in January of this year. If you read through the last page or two of posts, you will see the more detailed discussion.

Hope that helps to clarify things.

Family of Alabama jail officer who 'helped an inmate escape' says she wouldn't have gone willingly | Daily Mail Online

I'm wondering whether whoever told the media they are not related, actually knew what they were talking about. I mean, how would the sheriff's spokesman even know that? Who would they ask?

I find myself wondering whether perhaps CW is a son of one of VW's ex-husband's brothers. Not sleuthing it of course but just wondering if there is perhaps a possible family relation rather than a jailhouse romance.

MOO
