Evergreen police, family search for missing woman

Shari Saunders, 67, was traveling from Norfolk, Virginia, to Monroeville, over the weekend to visit family. According to Evergreen Police, Saunders was last seen shortly after 1 am Sunday morning when she stopped to get gas at Shell/Marathon station at Exit 93 on I-65.

Surveillance video from the gas station shows Saunders and her 2010 red Toyota Corolla at a gas pump at 1:08 am. Surveillance photos from inside the store also show Saunders at the cash register. The surveillance video then shows her pull out of the gas station parking lot, heading west on U.S. 84 at 1:11 am.

Here's the Shell Station just off of I-85 @ Exit 63 Google Maps

Shell is on AL-12 which (heading east) just happens to turn into U.S. 84.

East from the Shell via the 84 to Monroeville....is only 25 miles.
Google Maps

But AT 1:11 am....the route looks concerning to me.
Was she tired???
Unfamiliar with the road???
Uggg.

Where are you Shari???

Hm. I wonder if she had a health issue? Like dementia or something? She was in regular contact I think I read (every 30 min or so) with family until somewhere in South Carolina. I wonder if she just got confused? I’m going to look for links about what I’m saying... will edit quickly.

ETA:
Woman traveling from Norfolk to Alabama goes missing
Relatives filed missing person reports in Norfolk and Alabama. They say investigators told them her cell phone pinged off a tower a half mile from their home then again a few miles south.

Amanda Reed, Saunders’ niece, says her aunt left Norfolk last Saturday and should’ve arrived later that night.

“You have no idea what it’s like and I pray nobody ever does,” Reed says about the anxiety her family is feeling.

Reed’s father, Bill Hager, says she would normally contact them with updates every 30 minutes. The last he heard from her was about 20 miles south of Colombia, South Carolina and she was supposed to call outside of Atlanta.

Still no sign of Shari Saunders three days after her car was found

I can only see this going 3 ways.

1: Someone hijacked her car and is either holding her somewhere or has disposed of her.
2: She became lost and stuck there for whatever reason and is out there somewhere.
3: Planned suicide.

1 and 2 is my most likely guess, as I can't seem to find anything that points to suicide aside from the sudden loss of contact hours before she was expected to arrive.

Wow the search was called off before it even started??? UPDATE: Search for Shari Saunders suspended
Search crews Monday and Tuesday combed through a heavily wooded area but turned up no sign of Saunders. Authorities had called for volunteers to help search Wednesday but sent them home before the search even began. We’re not sure why. Authorities have been very tight-lipped about where the investigation and search stands Wednesday.

This travel center / truck stop is near the location her car was found according to google maps. I wonder if she met with foul play with someone at the truck stop. I asked her niece, on her FB page, if she knew whether or not cameras at that location had been checked. She said they had, but did not see her. She did not say how many cameras and if they were inside or outside.

Investigators were initially able to obtain records from Saunders’s cell phone, which showed that the phone “pinged” off the cellular towers in Repton and Ollie as she traveled west on U.S. Highway 84. Oddly, about an hour after her phone “pinged” off the tower at Ollie, it “pinged” one last time off a cell tower behind the Yellow Hammer Travel Center at Exit 69 on I-65, west of Brewton. That occurred at 3:36 a.m. on Sun., Aug. 5, and since that time, there has been no other activity on her phone, officers said.

So she was last seen at 1:11 am leaving the Shell station and at 3:36 am her last cell phone ping is roughly 30 miles due south of her intended direction. Do we know if LE has located the cell phone or just using cell phone records? Like Choux above states this is either an abduction or she got lost.

I'm familiar with Highway 84 and the Love's gas station across the street from where she was last seen but I've never driven this road at this time of night but it is dark with a lot overhead trees and canopy. During the day there is a lot of logging truck but on an early Sunday morning I doubt there would be any traffic. The car was found deep in the woods near a hunting camp close to I-65. Was the car stuck, broke down, have any kind of damage to it? Based on her age and she looks like a smoker (I could be wrong on that) I don't think she could walk that far away from her car. Scrolling through the niece's FB page I see the niece mention that LE reviewed surveillance footage from the Yellow Hammer Truck Stop that is close to where the car was found and Shari isn't seen on it. The niece also stated that LE were checking for DNA inside the car to see if anyone else was in the car.

Okay I found some additional, updated information from a local newspaper. https://www.brewtonstandard.com/2018/08/22/virginia-woman-still-missing/

The car was found stuck in the mud with a window broken out. The car has since been taken to Mobile for FBI processing including hair, soil, and such. The article also mentions that Shari was to meet her family in Ollie and they were then going to escort her to their home which is south of Ollie. The cell phone pinged in Ollie which means she made it to or very close to her rendezvous point with family but she's not there and the cell phone pinged roughly an hour and half later 30 miles away. There is two gas stations and a Huddle House at the intersection of highways 21 and 84 where family was to meet her. I wonder if video surveillance captured her ever arriving. Looking at Google maps the Shell station at this intersection appears to have cameras under the awning covering the pumps but I wonder how wide of a viewing angle they provide if she pulled up along the edge of the parking lot away from the pumps.
