This is one of those times when I wish the punishment really could fit the crime - that they be shackled in their own waste for weeks, hog tied, never given enough food to make them full, taunted with pies, no television, no entertainment, no outside contact, etc.

I’d DVR’d the NBC Nightly News this evening and just watched it a few minutes ago. Here’s a quote from that broadcast about the Turpin children. .

“The victims are so weak that they’re receiving antibiotics, nutrition by IV.
So malnourished, they could still go into shock.
The Turpin’s 29 year old daughter, weighed just 82 pounds.”

It is possible to get your period with less than 22% body fat. I did not achieve that until college (I remember not weighing enough in my health class), and I got my period regularly when I was in 4th grade. I was very tiny and underweight.

How is homeschooling not more regulated? These kids didn’t even know what a police officer is. Obviously they weren’t being instructed (understatement of the year). Idk, I’ve been into a few cases lately where homeschooling is a theme. I never really had a reason to think about homeschooling before. Homeschooling isn’t really a thing where I live. So it wasn’t something I thought about until recently. But it just keeps popping up. And this is not to say all homeschooling parents are abusers by any means. But boy does it seem to give abusers easy access.

Yes, a lot of flaws and loopholes in the system are coming to light. Hopefully this will lead to uniform standards in the home schooling business to protect children and ensure they're safe and being well educated, prepared for the world when they become adults. Most states don't even do background checks on the home schooling parents to screen for sex offenders, violent felons, etc. JMO, parents should go through an application process if they want to home school their children, just as a day care center or public school is required to do. Fire safety checks, curriculum approval, testing, etc.

Same here. I got burned out on the Caylee Anthony and Drew Peterson cases.. I was so disappointed in the outcome of the Casey Anthony trial, but glad to see Drew Peterson in prison. I wish Stacy Peterson's remains had been found though.

Urine burn, for one. I've rescued enough paralyzed animals to know how fast that can happen. And I imagine bed sores if they were chained for weeks in urine. This was one of the first things I thought about.

I'm guessing skin infections, untreated bladder infections become difficult to clear up and require IVs, and can move into the kidneys.

Not just application process, but also the same educational standards as school teachers. My mom is an amazing woman with a heart of gold, but if she decided to Home school me, it would have been a major disadvantage due to her not having the same education and training that my teachers had.

The NBC news at 6:00pm in Los Angeles said that a classmate remembers the Turpin boy who attended college classes with him. It was stated that they knew something wasn't right. The Turpin boy was very thin and never wore shoes. He only wore flip-flops.

These poor children and adults have to get the medical problems cleared up first before the mental part can be taken care of.

Lots of people are homeschooled and they aren't being abused.
Yes, it's a lot easier to abuse kids if they're being homeschooled, but plenty of kids that are in the public school system are abused as well.
Now obviously, the Turpins weren't homeschooling and were just using it as an easy way to abuse the kids.

My brother who is almost 6 is homeschooled. The reason why? He's intellectually above other kids his age. He'd be bored stiff in school if he were to be enrolled in the schools here.

I do agree that there should be more home checks and regulations on homeschools. There would probably be less cases like this and others on WS if this happened.

We all wondered if the parents were so ruthless as to have food for themselves that the children could see and smell and but not eat. Now we know.
The parents put the food on the counter so the children could see and smell the food but not eat any of it themselves.

Not entirely off topic.......in an animal cruelty case here....it was explained to some people who were cruel to some cats and dogs - just how cruel it was for them to eat in front of starving animals - the animals could smell the food their owners were eating and this would induce hunger feeling in the animals. And the act of seeing and watching their owners eating would also induce hunger feelings and the generation of digestive fluids as the body expects food to be forthcoming. GROWWLL!!!!!!!!

This is how these monsters treated their 13 children. It is a shame none of this starvation treatment can be inflicted on them. I wonder how they felt being in chains.!!!
