In my area (SE PA), the governor closed down the State Stores (who sell liquor) as of Tuesday, which I see as the first step to close down local bars. This is going down incrementally. The casinos, malls, sports teams, college were already shut down. When they get shut down, why cannot the next level, as far as I see it? I take no opinion on the decisions, but I can see it coming. I f you can shut down the "big guys," you can shut down the little guys. I feel bad for the small businesses and their employees.

I just read that Governor DeWine in Ohio is implementing some measures to try to mitigate some of the consequences of closing restaurants and bars at 9 p.m. Restaurants are still able to delivery, and some restaurant owners said they may be able to deploy some of their staff for delivery, but there will be layoffs of staff. The state will provide unemployment insurance to laid off workers without the mandatory waiting period. And regarding purchases of spirits over the last 30 days, if unopened, bars and restaurants can return them, also people who bought a lot of spirits for major events - such as St.Patrick Day's celebrations. There may be other things, but these are the ones that caught my attention.

Christmas Day was the day we found out we are going to be 1st time Grandparents. I have been shopping up a storm, all things baby. Last month helping with some prelim baby shower plans, planning the date as we are hosting the men's diaper party. Yes diaper party's are a thing now. I woke up every day with such excitement. Now it's concern. Of course gatherings can be planned for after birth. Concern for Mom and baby and of course all Family. Seems a dark cloud over head. How things can change so quickly.

Yeah, Pa is headed there real soon. Just a matter of time before they shut the bars. If you cut off the supplies, then the bars shut down by attrition.

My doctor sent me this link which is absolutely fascinating for anyone studying the numbers. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of Canadian data or projections, but there is some really good information using current data from the US, UK, Australia and other countries.

If you like data and epidemiology, you will find this very informative. There are lots of graphs, including information on beds/1000 people in the highest hit countries, rates of infection, areas where there will be pressure on the system, and shows the anticipated results of social distancing.

Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now

I read that the other day and noticed that the author was getting skewered in the comments because he has absolutely no expertise in this field. I looked him up and he doesn’t. That doesn’t mean he’s wrong, but some commenters we’re trying to educate him about where he messed up. So just a FWIW. But it was quite fascinating...if he’s accurate.

You'll be a great grandmother to your first grandbaby! Congrats, and stay strong!

The city that sleeps! New York is turned into a virtual ghost town as people stay indoors and off the subway, away from the city's restaurants and bars with many closing for weeks as thousands of staff are laid off as the coronavirus takes hold

It is hard to believe what is happening. A little less than three months ago we celebrated Christmas and New Year and now we are terrified of catching a virus.

Yeah, it's looking pretty stupid IMO. I saw a report saying that dine-in restaurants who have managed to stay open, are down 75% of revenue. I'm not in any hurry to hop on the subway, to be sure (although they disinfected 100% of the stations not too long ago); but when the folks of a major outdoor concern email me and say we have to keep a 6-foot distance from each other - again, at an outside venue - that to me is just madness, IMO.

And of course, it's the people who can afford least who are going to suffer.

Owners of restaurant conglomerations can afford to be out of business. Your local restaurant owner with 4, 5, or 1 to their name; cannot afford to go out of business. I'm wondering who they think are supposed to be paying all these people. How long can/does the teacher union guarantee salaries? The mayor is loath to close schools because he thinks if he does, they might not open in time for the next school year. (Not sure I understand why; it's not like a factory assembly line, but maybe the implication is that the teachers will indeed go someplace else to work in the interim - if they can find other jobs.)

My daughter is expecting in May, probably at the height of the crisis, in BC. She's a doctor and expects to be working right up until baby comes. I'm worried too. <<Hugs>>

BBM:
Had to drive through downtown San Antonio today near River Walk. Dreary day, yet scads of people were walking around as if, "What virus?" Unbelievable. Spring break in TX extended - lots of families with kids. Just wanted to stop the car and scream. This is not a vacation. The extended bread is to stop the spread of a disease that could scar your lungs, kill your children, or kill you.

Visions of Venice...Riverwalk...

Literally. This is a scary foreboding image.

Wow.

Moo.

And not to mention previously linked articles about SA—-there was an initial breach /big booboo iirc, moo.

Anyway this is really sad and bad to hear.

Looking to see what the TX Governor is encouraging and not encouraging.

This makes me so sad. I'm a Philly girl, but I still love NYC. :(

I'm really interested in what's known about there being different strains of COVID-19 and going to start reading online over the next few days.

If you happen to read a particularly interesting or informative article about this topic of the different strains, please tag me in your post - if you post about it here - or please message me links. I can't keep up fully with these threads. TIA.

(Massachusetts) Gov. Charlie Baker Sunday evening announced five new public health orders that would bring sweeping changes across the state in the coming weeks, aimed at limiting the spread of the coronavirus and the COVID-19 disease.

“The reason we’re taking this so seriously is it is incredibly contagious," Baker said. “It is more contagious than the seasonal flu.”

The orders include closing down all schools in the state for three weeks effective on Tuesday.

Baker mandated that all restaurants and bars in the state would not be allowed to serve customers on site, and be restricted to serving food and beverages only through delivery and takeout. The restaurant order is effective Tuesday, March 17 and will remain in place through April 6, he said.

“It’s highly contagious,” Baker said. “By breaking up large gatherings and encouraging social distancing, we will discourage the spread.”

The governor also said parents should take social distancing seriously.“We will not be doing our part to prevent the spread if there are a ton of kids hanging out, playing video games and sharing snacks from one house to the next,” he said.

The other major change the governor’s orders make is banning gatherings of more than 25 people. This is a significant downsizing from the previous ban of 250 or more people.

The orders also ban any visitors to assisted living facilities and nursing homes, with an exception for end of life issues, the governor said.

Banning of gatherings does not apply to grocery stores and pharmacies, the governor said, noting those were essential functions.

The governor also took the opportunity to counter rumors.

“We are not planning any forced shelter-in-place orders,” Baker said. “Everyone needs to get their news from legitimate places, not their friend’s friend’s friend.”

Officials said the best thing the public can do is to practice keeping at least 6 feet from others.

Coronavirus prompts Gov. Charlie Baker to close all Massachusetts K-12 schools for 3 weeks, ban restaurants and bars from serving patrons on site through April 6
