The man who went into cardiac arrest on a United flight 8 days ago had COVID, but the airline still hasn't notified passengers and says it's not their responsibility.

As TMZ reported, the New Orleans Medical Examiner determined the 69-year-old man had COVID and died of cardiac arrest. During the medical emergency on the flight from Orlando to L.A., the man's wife was heard saying her husband was suffering from COVID symptoms -- shortness of breath and a loss of taste and smell. He apparently didn't tell the truth before boarding and didn't disclose his symptoms.

United has still not notified the 179 passengers on board. A spokesperson for the airline tells TMZ they are not medical professionals so they can't make COVID determinations. The spokesperson said they have been in touch with the CDC and given them the flight manifest. The spokesperson says it's up to the CDC to contact passengers who may have been exposed.

We asked why the airline wouldn't immediately tell the passengers someone on the plane had COVID symptoms and, since he was in distress for nearly an hour before the emergency landing, wouldn't it be advisable to tell passengers so they could make decisions like staying away from elderly relatives during the Christmas holidays. The response ... they're not medical professionals so it's not up to them.

The spokesperson said they didn't know for nearly a week the passenger had COVID so they couldn't make any determination, but they clearly knew the guy had symptoms.

Many private companies notify their employees directly when they suspect someone in the office might be COVID-positive, so why not the airlines?

The passengers we've spoken to say they have not heard from the CDC.

Well... the UK has just become the 10th country to join the magic/tragic “1000 Club” that nobody ever wanted to be in.

Montenegro too.
USA joining in the next day or so.

That’s one citizen dead from Covid out of every thousand :(

It begs the question. Would you go to a baseball game with 60,000 fans, if you knew there would be a mass shooting that claimed the lives of 60? And still, some people can't wrap their feeble "brains" around that concept.

And beyond that, attendance at the game is not optional, it's mandatory, since we're living it each and every day. Essentially we're All going to that game with 60,000, and 60 of us are not coming home.

Also, the UK is actually 5th worldwide in terms of countries with a population of 11 Million or more. The U.S. will become #6 either tomorrow or Thursday.

I’ll take that as a bit of good news at this point

After undergoing routine testing due to coming into close contact with the COVID-19 virus, officials say Governor Henry McMaster was notified late Monday evening that he tested positive for the virus.

The governor's office said last week that the Governor and First Lady tested negative on Monday, December 14 prior to attending a White House Christmas event and on Thursday, December 10 prior to meeting with Vice President Mike Pence.

“Peggy and I urge everyone to be extra careful during the Christmas holiday season,” said Gov. Henry McMaster. “This virus spreads very easily.”

Solid advice there Gov. Speaking of being "extra careful" with "this virus that spreads very easily," how was the White House party?

Well, I guess there have to be exceptions, right? And it's not like anybody associated with the White House has contracted the virus over the last several months. What a douche!

So this means each time I read a post or two, a person is dead from Covid. Evil virus:(

Maybe they don't plan on doing anything much to help curb the virus. But AZ is not in a good place.
Another article says ....

Arizona's average rate of new cases in the past week ranks among the highest in the nation
The state data dashboard shows 92% of all ICU beds and 92% of all inpatient beds in Arizona were in use Sunday
Monday's case report was among the highest since the start of the pandemic

Gov. Doug Ducey's recent strategies to address the COVID-19 surge have stopped short of what medical providers and public health leaders have advised to curb hospitalizations and deaths.
Leaders of six major medical and public health groups in Arizona on Thursday asked Ducey to take more aggressive action against the spread of COVID-19, including banning indoor dining, limiting public gatherings to no more than 25 people and implementing a statewide and enforceable mask mandate.

“My parents have not been able to see their surviving son for over a year. These are all very difficult things,” she added.”

Oh yeah, my parents have been isolated for the same time period. Haven’t seen grandchildren since last Christmas.

Jumping off Dr. Maria’s comments yesterday wrt “genome sequencing”, “surveillance”, etc:

Initial whole-genome sequencing and analysis of the host genetic contribution to COVID-19 severity and susceptibility | Cell Discovery
Nov. 10, 2020

“Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has accounted for millions of infections and hundreds of thousand deaths worldwide in a short-time period. The patients demonstrate a great diversity in clinical and laboratory manifestations and disease severity. Nonetheless, little is known about the host genetic contribution to the observed interindividual phenotypic variability. Here, we report the first host genetic study in the Chinese population by deeply sequencing and analyzing 332 COVID-19 patients categorized by varying levels of severity from the Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital. Upon a total of 22.2 million genetic variants, we conducted both single-variant and gene-based association tests among five severity groups including asymptomatic, mild, moderate, severe, and critical ill patients after the correction of potential confounding factors. Pedigree analysis suggested a potential monogenic effect of loss of function variants in GOLGA3 and DPP7 for critically ill and asymptomatic disease demonstration. Genome-wide association study suggests the most significant gene locus associated with severity were located in TMEM189–UBE2V1 that involved in the IL-1 signaling pathway. The p.Val197Met missense variant that affects the stability of the TMPRSS2 protein displays a decreasing allele frequency among the severe patients compared to the mild and the general population. We identified that the HLA-*advertiser censored*11:01, B*51:01, and C*14:02 alleles significantly predispose the worst outcome of the patients. This initial genomic study of Chinese patients provides genetic insights into the phenotypic difference among the COVID-19 patient groups and highlighted genes and variants that may help guide targeted efforts in containing the outbreak. Limitations and advantages of the study were also reviewed to guide future international efforts on elucidating the genetic architecture of host–pathogen interaction for COVID-19 and other infectious and complex diseases.“

This is good news ...... it means, to me, that US herd immunity is possible/probable.

Americans' willingness to take the coronavirus vaccine has jumped since the first two vaccines were authorized by the FDA and health care workers and nursing home residents began to receive the shots.

That growing acceptance is a reassuring sign for public health experts who call distribution of the vaccine crucial to controlling the pandemic that has killed more than 318,000 people in the USA.

In a USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll Wednesday through Sunday, 46% say they will take the vaccine as soon as they can.
In the new poll, 32% say they will wait for others to get the shots before they do so themselves.
(This leaves only 20% who won't take the vaccine, and 2% who are undecided.)

Great news that folks are changing! Yet there are 20% of the population that you have to add to those that won't be able to take it. (children) While it may not be "herd immunity", I would assume it would create a significant dip in the endemic level as we get more and more. Where I live, we are at 586/100,000 as to infection rate over last 14 days. Much much higher than the highest state level and many areas of California.

Also, since this is 95% efficacious, do we now need less than projected to get to herd than we would have it it was only 60% efficacious?

CVS Health to begin administering vaccines at long-term care facilities this week

More at link
WOONSOCKET, R.I. —
Teams from CVS Health will begin administering COVID-19 vaccinations at long-term care facilities in Massachusetts on Dec. 28, the Rhode Island-based company said Monday.

CVS teams plans to administer the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine in facilities across 12 states this week, and the company plans to vaccinate up to 4 million residents and staff at more than 40,000 long-term care facilities through the program.

CVS Health will begin administering COVID-19 vaccinations this week in New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Oregon.

Vaccinations will begin in Massachusetts and 35 more states, as well as the District of Columbia, on Dec. 28. Puerto Rico will activate on Jan. 4.

CVS Health said it expects to complete the long-term care facility vaccination effort in about 12 weeks.

Additionally, iirc from Dr. Torres last night on NBC Nightly News, CVS will be one entity offering both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Looking link jmo brb. Iirc, Dr. JT also mentioned something specifically about “children”, noting to pull quote so I don’t forget.

* It must be stated that several reputable sources have said to get whichever vaccine you have access to, as there will not always be choices available.

Today is the day that my state may be out of the woods with regard to our recent outbreak. What a great Christmas present that would be.
And this, of course, is if we can keep ourselves safe from the outbreak in the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

In good news, South Australia’s worst coronavirus cluster could officially be declared eliminated today.

AAP reports that if no new cases are reported on Wednesday, the Parafield cluster will be considered busted, after the passing of 28 days, or two incubation cycles, since the last infection.

South Australia is also on track to enjoy a Covid-normal Christmas with low-level restrictions and no plans to impose more measures despite continuing concern over the growing cluster in Sydney.

SA has only three active infections, all returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine.

Australia coronavirus live: Sydney anxiously awaits Christmas Covid announcement
