Michelle Troconis

Michelle Troconis enters the Stamford courthouse after lunch of the first day of jury selection

Much of the questioning Wednesday centered around media coverage of the case, both prior and upcoming. The judge excused a prospective juror who works as a hyperlocal journalist in a neighboring town, calling the case “a media turbo engine.”

Troconis turned around and nodded at friends and family in the courtroom after that juror’s dismissal.

Troconis appeared in court wearing a white blouse with a gray sweater tied around her shoulders. She ate lunch at a nearby diner and re-entered the courthouse after lunch while talking on her cell phone.

Multiple family and friends were seated behind her in the courtroom during Wednesday’s proceedings.

Jury selection is expected to continue Thursday and last two to four weeks. The fact that two jurors were selected Wednesday suggests that they might be ahead of the game, Schoenhorn said.

Randolph instructed the jury pool that attorneys will begin presenting evidence in the case at the start of the new year, with the trial scheduled to start on Jan. 8, 2024,. He said the evidence portion of the trial is expected to conclude no later than March 1, 2024.

The judge denied a motion from Schoenhorn asking to have 12 jurors serve on the jury. He also denied another motion on Wednesday morning in which Schoenhorn asked for jurors to be selected from the Hartford Judicial District rather than the Fairfield Judicial District

Jennifer Farber Dulos, mother of five, went missing after dropping off her kids at school on May 24, 2019. Her vehicle was later found near Waveny Park in New Canaan, Conn., while blood stains and splatter were found in her garage. Dulos, presumed dead, is still missing.

Despite JS's objections about the media influence in the JFD disappearance and apparent death, it's good to remember that "fair and impartial" juries were found in many high-profile murders.

The referenced article below discusses several such cases in CA including then Scott Peterson case. (although the judge's dismissal of prospective jurors who did not favor the death penalty...another story).

CA's population is certainly larger than CT's, but there are 12 individuals who should qualify for MT's trial.

After having served on 3 juries, I know that some of the discussion prior to being brought in for voir dire involved some of the people in the jury pool discussing "how they were going to avoid" jury duty, especially for a long case. Unfortunately many people can't or won't commit the time necessary for the trial. '

It may take a month, but the jurors are there to be found, IMO. I don't think it would be any easier in Hartford.

Does anyone know if JS is using a jury consultant?

Judge Kevin A. Randolph has announced five questions that the court plans to ask every perspective juror in the Michelle Troconis trial:
1. Have you heard about this case?
2. Do you regularly follow media reports of this case?
3. Have you made any social media posts about this case?
4. Have you formed an opinion on this case?
5. Can you follow court instructions to not follow media coverage of this case and agree not to do any independent research/investigating?

It sort of cracked me up that Schoenhorn requested that if the trial couldn’t be moved to Hartford, that the jurors be pulled from there instead. As if people in Hartford have not heard of this case, or that they might be “more fair”. If “fair” is what he wants, he might want to be careful what he wishes for…

“Schoenhorn asked for jurors to be selected from the Hartford Judicial District rather than the Fairfield Judicial District”
How many ways and times does this guy have to be told No! Thankfully this judge has his number.

In the video of the MT peeps walking from parking garage to the court, posted by Marissa Alter, there is a woman in a dark suit on the left side of MT holding files, then Schoenhorn is on MT’s right. Wondering if that woman could be a jury consultant as I have not seen her before ? It also looks like there might be a grandmother with them today too. Jmo.

Not to mention driving an hour and 20 minutes to court every day. MOO.

I guess Gloria Farber wouldn’t be too interested in this portion of the trial process-but I wonder if she will be present when the trial starts in January?
I wonder if it’s a matter of physical and emotional capacity for the agonizing long game.

I wonder if Jennifer’s loved ones—all of them—are carefully, strategically, judiciously making decisions re: their physical presence taking into account 1) Safety/Privacy and 2) Impact.

I’m not sure, but he does now have co-counsel in the case, Audrey Felson. The two of them spoke with their client before accepting or striking potential jurors.
