Maybe he was going to surprise his wife and bring her back to the hotel for a night out. He could have meant to pick her up in a hour.
 
Or maybe he ordered a girl for a tryst but once he seen that stocky beast at the door he changed his mind. Lol. Then he texted his wife because the tryst was a no go. But the girl got mad because he didnt want to pay because she looked nothing like the girl in the ad. So the girl went ballistic and killed him. I think this is very plausible. Jmo.
 
The ex and I once spent a few days at the Boulder Broker, even though it was 8 miles from our house. We took a vacation without going anywhere. We enjoyed room service and being away from the kids, phone, etc and drudgery. Plus, if I decided to off him, I wouldn't have ruined my own carpets. lol

I think it is plausible to think DM went to the Donovan for drinks, but I think it would be more likely that an acquaintance spiked his drink and then invited him to his/her room to lie down. If he were drugged, the acquaintance -- whether male or female -- could easily subdue him. Maybe they removed some of his clothing to make it appear he was at the hotel for a tryst. I wonder if the clothing that had been removed was among the items found in the room. If so, was it bloody?

I'm sure LE has much more of the surveillance video but released only the portion in which the POI entered the hotel because it contains a full view of the POI's face. The purpose of releasing it, IMO, was only to identify the POI. I think LE has enough evidence to reveal what happened at the hotel but are still seeking a motive and a suspect. JMO

Also, if DM went to the Donovan for drinks, there would be witnesses as to whether he acted ill and whom he left with. Does the restaurant tend to be overly busy? Would DM and an acquaintance have blended in, hardly noticed? On the other hand, if the restaurant had very few patrons at the time, were DM and an acquaintance overlooked? Perhaps the only witness was a waiter who was in the back when DM and another person left.
 
There is alot of speculating or accusations towards the wife on this thread,just a reminder she is a victim and innocent at this time.

I called once when my husband was gone for ten hours, just to check if his car was involved in an accident. They checked and then asked me if I wanted to file a report.

About 20 years ago I called mother after I got home from work and she didn't answer, which was unusual. I drove over to her house, about 15 minutes away and she wasn't there. I didn't want to call my sister because I was afraid she'd get hysterical. So, I drove to the church Mom attended since they had weeknight groups that met. She wasn't there, so I drove to a park she occasionally went to. After not finding her and returning to her house and she still wasn't there, I called the police. They told me I had to wait to file a report. Eventually, I talked to my sister (I don't remember if she called, or I caller her) and she told me Mom had gone somewhere with a coworker. LOL. Everything was okay, but my point is that I called police within a few hours of discovering my mother was missing even though there was a 24-hour waiting period.

So, I agree that most people are going to call LE within a few hours when a loved one is uncharacteristically absent. I think the wife's actions in this case are very normal.

The flip flops, shorts, shampoo...
I usually don't take those when going for drinks or to a business meeting.
I would say, maybe, he went to the gym but where are his sneakers. Or...maybe a spa, but, why hide that from your wife? Unless she wouldn't approve.

I wonder if he paid by credit card, otherwise, why pay with cash and give your "real" name. Did LE know his name from hotel records or from his ID in his wallet?

It does sound like a gym bag. DH carries one and he keeps flip flops, a towel, deo/shampoo (travel size), shorts or sweats (depending on the weather), a T-shirt and his ear buds. He usually goes in the morning, so in the morning, he would have his tennis shoes and socks on, and they would not be in the bag. In the evening, they would be in the bag.

But, if he didn't give his real name, how did LE know what time he checked in and know that he was the one who reserved the room? Did they find the receipt in his room?

Exactly!
So...either he didn't have sneakers OR they are part of the items on the list that was not released.
IMO there were no sneakers.

The hotel has cameras. LE can see if it was him who checked in and what time. IMO
 
Kind of makes me wonder if the bag was used as a prop from time-to-time, i.e., "Honey, I am stopping at the gym after work. I'll be home in about an hour," which in reality translates to I'm going to the hotel room for an hour - at least some of the time (maybe not all).
 
The one thing that is tripping me up is the location of the hotel. It's near his job, near his home and thus near people whom he knows. I would think that if drugs or prostitutes/escorts were involved, someone of his status and education would take steps to at least geographically separate nefarious activities. He could run into a colleague, client, neighbor, anyone - they could be milling around. "Hey, Dave, I saw you checking into the hotel the other day. Everything okay with the wife?" That kind of thing..

Or it could be an unwritten rule in DC not to speak of such things since, I'm assuming, a lot of it happens (and even in the White House!). ;)

Lol. Hotels need to offer us parents a nice yearly package. Lol. Because once the kids are teens and their room is right next to yours; It is very hard for us adults to act like young teens again. Lol. Now instead of sending the kids or in-laws to a friend's house; It is definitely much more easier and discreet for us to book a hotel for the night which may be right down the street. Lol.
 
I am still perplexed by earlier reports that the wife said the last time she saw him was on Sunday. Can anyone verify that, if true did she work nights? I believe she is an anestesiologist at a hospital there.

An attorney who police say was killed in his downtown Washington hotel room last week was stabbed several times in the back and was found lying face down on the floor, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in D.C. Superior Court on Wednesday. Police also said that a wallet was found next to David Messerschmitt’s head with “various credit cards strewn about.”
