Some drag queens are trans women, a few are cis (not transgender) women, and some are cis men. Most are either trans women or cis men. It would be extremely unusual for someone not on the trans spectrum to get breast implants or go on hormone therapy to grow breast tissue. Paris is Burning is a fantastic documentary focusing on the (mostly POC) LGBTQ+ community in New York in 1990. A lot of the drag performers are gay men, but some are trans women, there's a lot of crossover. There's an unsolved murder in the documentary too. It's currently free on Youtube, and gives a good insight into LGBTQ+ life at the time.

I have a trans friend who frequently performed in drag shows, and when I've seen her perform, she is by no means the only person there who has breast implants. The relation between the gay and trans communities has always been complex but seemingly present. She absolutely presents and identifies as female.
There are many reasons someone would choose not to get surgery on their genitals--loss of sexual function, cost and availability of the procedure versus top surgery, even lack of dysphoria related to those parts of their bodies. The only reason to potentially concern ourselves with Julie's surgeries is that bottom surgery at that time would probably not have not been performed frequently or in many locations, which could provide clues to her identity.
 
I have a theory on who she could be but feel I should clarify info first. It seems there is a lot of misinformation on this thread. Being a part of the LGBTQ community, this case hits home hard for me.

Firstly, I believe she may have gotten full gender reassignment surgery (also known as "bottom surgery") as her remains were found mummified, and there was no evidence of her having the genitalia she was born with, although she could have.

Secondly, just because she was on hormones does not mean she necessarily had bottom surgery but it doesn't mean she didn't either. You can be on hormone therapy and still possess your original hormone glands (i.e. testes or ovaries). This does not interfere with the transition process but the overall impacts of this in the long term is not known. It's also possible she never had her name legally changed and still used her name at birth on legal documents.

It seems to me that she could have possibly been a sex worker. Moreover, I considered the fact that if she were ever reported missing, it could have been before she transitioned. Using hormones through male to female transition takes years, I repeat YEARS to impact her bones like it did. Anyway, I wanted to start a discussion.

I started looking up missing persons reports from the early 1980s and came across a young man - Joseph Martin Schedler - who went missing in California in the 1980. A few things caught my eye. He appears to be around the right height and weight and has brown hair and hazel eyes. He wore his hair longer and had blonde highlights -- Julie Doe had naturally brown hair that was bleached.

Joseph's face and structure are similar to Julie. They have similar eye and lip shapes. While Julie had reconstructive surgery, they have the same slender bridge of their nose. and he was last reported to be staying at the Union Rescue Mission -- a homeless shelter -- in the spring and summer of 1980. It's worth noting that many LGBTQ youth are often kicked out of their homes and live either on the streets or in shelters.

Obviously, there's no way to assume this applies to Schedler and I'm trying to rule this out by finding out more information on him but can't find ANYTHING. Assistance?

Julie may have been a sex worker, I agree, but I think that if she was, she had a wealthy benefactor, was a high class escort, or had another source of income. Hormones and affirmation surgery are expensive and the surgery especially was likely was even more expensive back then, considering there were fewer surgeons who did it.

In Janet Mock's autobiography, Redefining Realness, she describes how she was a sex worker in her youth in the late 90s/early 2000s. She mentions that some of the other trans women would have a particular man who would offer to pay for surgery for them. One of her regulars even offered to do this for Janet, though she declined. Janet herself saved up enough money with her sex work and with working in a clothing store to fund the surgery herself, she went to Thailand as it's cheaper there with better surgeons who have more experience. I'm not sure how much things changed for the trans community between when our Julie had her surgery (which was likely between 1979-1987 ish, going by Julie's predicted age range) and when Janet was transitioning but Janet's book is a good read for anyone wanting to know more.
 
A few MPs I’ve come across in the past couple of days that reminded me of Julie. One, Charles Lawson, is Charley Project’s featured case and I noticed a likeness to Carl K’s reconstruction of Julie, although he’s a bit older. Bennett Wall is another I found and created a thread for. He also resembles Julie and the circumstances of his disappearance could fit.

After the recent changes on Gadmatch her new highest match is 89.7 cM, with 16 matches with family tree and 38 matches over 40cM, I hope she will be identified soon!

I'm on the go right now and haven't read the thread properly, but has anyone ever considered Babette Alberti? I think she went missing around that time in Lousiana.
