I'm going to hate this case for a long time.
I do believe his parents are going to be the biggest obstacle to getting answers here. Part of me understands this as he is their son. But another part of me wonders how much of it is just them covering their behinds? The first I can forgive, the second not so much.

I wish flakka virtually disappeared.. I work in a very busy ER and we are still getting flakka patients. As a matter of fact I had two nurses who are on workers comp right now because they were attacked by a patient on flakka last month.
AMEN to that! I worked in a small town with a country Hosp before bath salts even made the news in our area. And still, we had our fair share of people coming in and made you stop and wonder WHAT have you taken?! Three men a little older than me brought a friend in saying he was acting weird, and they didn't know what was wrong with him, etc. They wanted to see the doc, would not even let me get vital signs! I got my on call doc on the phone, of course he asked for vitals, and when I told him they wouldn't let me take them, he got there super fast. Then it was obvious he had drank something, I could smell it on him, and then they basically called me a liar, then when I said I could smell the alcohol on him, the big mouth of the bunch said maybe he had a beer at noon before they went to see him. The patient was restless, and kind of "out of it", so he was admitted for observation. And I had more trouble with friends than the pt! Doc told them they needed to go on home so the pt could rest. We were lucky for the most part that scenarios like this were infrequent. When the new Hosp was built, it was decided a NP would be in ER around the clock, which has been a big help.

Someone said what my unspoken thoughts were screaming. THANK YOU!

It's possible that he won't survive if he's having severe liver failure. Given the description it sounds like the failing liver is causing the bleeding esophagus and the fluid in the lungs:
Dr. Wade Harrouff told The Palm Beach Post that his son, Austin Harrouff, 19, who is in critical but stable condition, has a malfunctioning liver, fluid in his lungs and a bleeding esophagus.

If his liver is so bad that he can't even remain conscious, the only way he might survive is with a live organ donation from a family member as otherwise I don't think he'll be fast-tracked on any waiting lists.

Sorry, I don't want him back on the streets. He is a danger to others in society.

Sounds like he could wind up with a trach, ventilator, and a Mickey Button on hospice. Mickey Button is similar to a feeding tube, but more convenient for pt and nsg staff. With organ failure, he's pretty much written himself a ticket to the wild blue yonder.

I think the answer as to what happened may have been hiding in plain sight to at least some degree. His family knew he used drugs and on YouTube he openly jokes about taking shrooms (and also implies he is/was on steroids). Shrooms aren't seen as a hard drug, but actually have been implicated in murder multiple times, like this MMA fighter who murdered while on shrooms sounds rather similar to this case, complete with attacking the face as well as seeing himself on some kind of mission and engaging in cannibalism:

Like probably what happened with the MMA fighter, it could have been a mega-trip caused by roid rage plus shrooms leading to a homicidal cannibalistic psychotic break. With shrooms the body temperature temporarily rises, but then it falls and you become sweaty.

If his mother or father want to donate organs to him, they can go right ahead. Otherwise I don't think he should be in line for any organs.

If he was using steroids, then steroid use would unmask underlying psychiatric disorder, which presumably be paranoid schizophrenia. If schizophrenia runs in a family, why didn't parents pay more attention to his strange behavior?

"Harrouff’s dad, Wade, thinks mental illness may have triggered the attacks. The teen hasn’t been diagnosed, his dad said, but schizophrenia runs in the family."

I had a friend die several years ago, due to liver problems. She was on Medicaid, and they insisted she see a specialist in Nebr, which was about a seven hour drive from where we lived. She was immediately put on a waiting list, but she died before a match could be found, which was 3 to 4 years.

P.S. the liver has many functions, a live donor isn't possible, since nobody can live without one. I can't see a parent giving him their liver in hopes that would save him, just so he can spend the rest of his life locked up. And that's IF that was the only organ he needed. It sounds like to me, he is experiencing multiple organ failure, and he probably would never be able to take anything by mouth again, plus being dependent on a vent.z

Sorry about the "z". Guess my finger got in the way!

Actually, when it comes to a liver transplant, a live donor is possible:

Live liver donations are done all the time. Because liver regenerates, a part of the liver can be donated.

Well, he did grab him by the collar and probably said shape up. Seriously, I wish his father wouldn't try to rewrite history now by making any more statements to media. That's MOO.

I knew this type of transplant has been done with diabetic patients with the pancreas, but haven't heard of the partial liver transplant. I have been working as a private duty nurse for the past 10 years, working with kids with physical and learning disabilities. Medical and surgical procedures change and advance on practically a weekly basis, and it's hard to keep up! Thanks for the info and article.
