Yes, i remember the case. Naming wrong person as POI could be costly not only in financial terms but also in terms of precious humans lives. Named as a POI but never charged with 2001 crime, Steven Hatfield filed a lawsuit in 2003, accusing the FBI agents and Justice Department officials who led the criminal investigation of leaking information about him to the press in violation of the Privacy Act. In 2008, the government settled Hatfill's lawsuit with $4.6 million annuity totalling $5.8 million in payment. Sadly, in 2008 S. Hatfield died of apparent suicide.

Actually Hatfill is still alive, he got (in)famous again during the covid pandemic for expressing controversial views. It was the next unfortunate POI in that anthrax case that killed himself - Bruce Ivins. I think that term should never be used again, but it seems the powers that be never learn...

I agree with what you say. You and I are on the same boat.

The issue is that when analising the behaviour of the perpetrator, LE has to start from somewhere in order to undersrand what they deal with.

Profiling, being based in statistical data of various crimes, comes handy precisely because points to the highest probability, and also narrows, where and what to search for. I worked with data all my proffessional life, large databases, sql.

Profiling is not math where 2 + 2 is always 4. You have certainly noticed that each profiler points to some nuances of perpetrators' behaviour they believe are significant and differ from the other similar crimes, based on the personal knowledge abd experience of the profiler, trying to find a logucal way when explaining unimaginable to ordinary person crime. And this is the beauty of the profiling that atrracts me.

So, to wrap the long story short: you srart with what is common between different crimes based on the information available and then you start fitting where you see the discrepances, deviations in realising to the perpetrators behaviour in relation to the crime they committed

So, your input about the old grandma from next door as long as it is based on logic and high probability is as useful as input from a profiler, they complement each other.

At the beginning of my posting about this case here, I wrote, and I still think it may be the case, that the perpetrator holds some sort of maintenance, manual or delivery (Amazon, regular food or groceries) job, a job which gave him opportunity to meet the victims and even to enter the house without being a close friend
My idea was based purely on analysing who may have access to the house legally but would be difficult to identify. I also suggested to check if there were deliveries or maintenance works in the neighbouring houses, as some of the neighbours may innocently attracted the perpetrators attention to 1122 Kings Road by complaining that there are regular parties and people go in and out of house all the time.

Yesterday, I was reading about different types of serial.killers and specialists also point out that statistically is more likely that a serial killer may hold a manual job.

What i am trying to say that when experience, logic, common sense and statistics join the forces together, profiling could be a very powerful tool helping to find and arrest the perpetrators.

It's really good but only thing I noticed was about this crime requiring significant physical strength.

It appears that this is not true. I'd also assumed it required significant strength so I went to have a look at the research on it & posted those links a few pages back. ( I was interested just cause I've never had to look at knife crime research before & I wanted to get a few more hints on potential perpetrators)

Actually, X's father went there just the weekend before the murders to "fix" a door lock for her. It's not clear if it was replaced or repaired or if it was her bedroom door or not. But there are photos of door knobs/locks that are not the former keycode locks.If you scroll to the 8:11 mark here you can see them:

Very true. Not only that - professional reporters have, on multiple occasions, misstated what is written on MPD's press releases! It's an impossible task for LE.

What you have to understand is that there are many people on here that are just not that educated. People like me - I dropped out of High School to get married, didn't get to go to college. To many of us all these entities - MPD, prosecutor, coroner, ISP are all "LE". And you can even lump in the media. I know they have adversarial relationships, by design, but collectively we see these people as the authorities, to protect us and inform us.

And I can tell you right now, they have seriously let us down on this one...

Statistically, there is a small, but chance that both brothers are identical twins, even if they have a sister-twin, who cannot be identical twin with them for obvious reason. So, IMO, the FridayFun's comment that both brothers do not even look like identical is not off, at all.

Were there unknown intruders in the house unbeknownst to some of the residents? Why would someone be concerned about fixing a lock on a door-because someone was entering the house

Complete speculation to follow:

Ethan and Xana = EX
Ethan belonged to Sigma Chi = ΣΧ

Some serial killers or killers with completely warped reasoning can see symbols, symmetry, and signs in all sorts of things. Would the similarity of initials/symbols somehow have made Ethan and Xana the targets, "special" victims due to this symmetry or symbolism? It doesn't make sense to a regular mind, but I could see this type of "logic" filtering through a warped mind as a "reason" to target someone. As in, they're "marked" for sacrifice or something. If so, perhaps Ethan and Xana were the main targets with K and M being collateral damage. (I know LE has said perhaps nobody was specifically targeted.) Not saying it's someone from the frat or their social circles or even the university -- it could have been a completely random person who saw them on social media and the "symbol/sign" was like a red cape being waved, grabbing the killer's attention.

LE has reasons for suspecting a targeted attack. They obviously believe it's important to keep the reasoning secret for the sake of the investigation. I support that decision.

If we knew the reasons, I suspect that we'd be underwhelmed.

My guess is that either they were latching onto the (basically debunked) idea that a victim with more wounds was the target, or they assumed that it was target simply because two victims were left alive.

Both of those reasons—if they were LE's reasons—are totally invalid.

The first victim may have had more wounds because the killer hadn't expended much energy yet.

As for the surviving roommates, they were on a lower level that might seem more like a basement to some people. The killer may not have known that there were any bedrooms down there. The girls who slept on that level likely entered from that level, too, so if the killer had been watching the house from the woods, he might not have seen them coming and going. He might have only been aware of Xana, Maddie, and Kaylee.

Frankly, I’ve lost confidence in their ability to accurately assess whether something IS, or is NOT a rumor in the first place… OR, whether something IS, or is NOT related and worth investigating further…

You can’t tell the public one thing for almost 3 weeks. Just one thing over and over — This was targeted… and then one day turn around and be like yeah, well we don’t really know. Then try to clean that up like 12 more times with even more confusing statements. SMH…

I just hope they get somebody soon. That is all I want at the end of the day, this sicko off the streets, and the chance for a semblance of closure for these families. To watch Kaylee’s dad come right out and reveal they decided not to have a funeral for their daughter because Kaylee’s mother was so horrified by the possibility of their daughter’s still unknown killer showing up to lurk around at K’s Celebration of Life service, that it was far to much for K’s mom to bear and so they decided to forgo it altogether. This poor family can’t even have a FUNERAL for their DAUGHTER. A daughter, who is clearly beloved by many. My heart just shatters for them because I literally can’t even imagine.

I watched a lot of the coverage today, a lot of the families speaking, a lot of the friends speaking, lots of tears, and overall, I think it’s rubbed off on me a little bit.

Praying for swift justice, and absolutely praying this individual, or individuals, is/are apprehended before this happens again to someone else, God forbid.

I agree. A thought occurred to me that perhaps LE are staging a sort of cat and mouse game and using the media to do so-so as to keep a possible suspect off balance IMO….meaning the statements to the public and press are being manipulated…This leads me to believe that LE has someone in mind and perhaps they are waiting for this person to come forward.
