'Very Special' Single Mom of 2 Who Helped Search for Missing Persons Disappears

The Courier-Journal reports that she made a call from her phone around 1:30 a.m. to a friend asking about a ride, but calls to her phone are now going straight to voicemail. She was reportedly last seen on foot.

Knabel is a single mother of two, according to the Facebook page “Finding Andrea.”

The page hopes to raise awareness for Knabel and has helped organize searches to aid the investigation.

“Andrea is a very special person,” the page states. “Her children need her home.”

Knabel was a “dedicated member” of the organization Missing in America, which helps search for missing people, according to the Facebook page.

“There’s no way I mean no way she would purposely disappear. We love you Andrea and we are fighting for you,” the page states.

Knabel was last seen wearing a light colored tank top and white shorts. She’s described as a white female, 5 foot 7 inches, weighing between 190 and 200 pounds with light brown hair.

Anyone with information is urged to call investigator Tracy Leonard at 502-618-9337 or investigator Dan Washington at 502-722-8181.

Authorities in Louisville, Kentucky, continue to search for a missing single mother, who was last seen on Aug. 13.

According to an investigator, Andrea Michelle Knabel, 37, was last seen walking in the Audubon Park neighborhood after leaving a residence around 1 a.m. Half an hour later, she made a call to a friend to try and get a ride. Since then, she hasn’t been seen and her calls go straight to voicemail.

Knabel is described as white with light brown hair, roughly 5-foot-7 and weighing around 190 pounds. She was last seen wearing a light-colored tank top with white shorts.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and investigators have been searching the greater Louisville area for Knabel for the past two weeks with no luck, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Finding Andrea,” has been set up to track the case and updates often. Volunteers connected via the page met last weekend to mount a search.

“We’ve done numerous database searches and everything from different leads to different tips, different associates,” Washington said. “Everything and anything, pretty much.”

Knabel is the mother of two children. In a bit of tragic irony, she works for Missing in America, a national organization that helps find missing people, both adults and children. She is said to have friends in the Louisville and southern Indiana areas.

Police urge anyone with information related to Knabel’s case to reach out to the LMPD hotline at 502-574-5673.

Missing Louisville Mom: Andrea Knabel Not Seen In Two Weeks

A Louisville, Kentucky mother who dedicates her time volunteering for an organization that searches for missing people has vanished.

Andrea Michelle Knabel, 37, was last seen around 1 a.m. on August 13, 2019, walking in the area of the 4000 block of Fincastle Road near her home in Louisville’s Audubon Park neighborhood, Andrea’s sister, Erin Knabel told Dateline.

“We talk daily, or every other day,” said Erin, who lives a few blocks away from her sister.

Erin added that Andrea “was sad” the last time she her, but that it isn’t like her sister to just walk off without telling anyone.

“She always keeps in touch with all of us, especially her children,” Erin said. “Even if she's visiting friends.”

Andrea is a single mother of two boys, ages six and eight. Erin said her sister spends her free time cooking, and the two of them do yard work together and take their children swimming.

“She is caring and thoughtful to others to a fault,” Erin told Dateline. “She is a joy to be with and my life won't be the same until she's back.”

Erin said Andrea had been laid off from her job at Humana, and then she was involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier this year that totaled her car.

Since then, Andrea had been volunteering for the organization “Missing in America,” Erin said. The organization, which is unaffiliated with Dateline’s digital series, has one mission: to locate missing adults and children.

“Andrea is not only a member, she has searched for a lot of missing people. She’s also a very good friend,” Missing in America’s founder Nancy Schaefer said in a video posted on the Finding Andrea Facebook page.

According to Schaefer, volunteers from Missing in America have been coming in from all over the United States to assist with the search for Andrea.

“I’m not going to stop looking for her. She’s my best friend. She’s a lot of people’s best friend,” Schaefer said. “She’s one of our own and we’re going to fight for her. We’re going to find her.”

In another video posted to the Finding Andrea Facebook page on Friday, private investigator Tracy Leonard said he is working on Andrea’s case, along with the Louisville Metro Police Department.

"We are looking at a couple different avenues and checking leads out daily. We have no indication at this point that leads us to believe that there is any foul play, but we are still very early in our investigation," Leonard said. "… We're just going to continue to look at what facts we discover."

Andrea’s sister Erin told Dateline she is “worried someone took her who doesn’t care about her or that she is hurt,” but added she doesn’t know anyone who would want to harm Andrea.

Leonard said in the Facebook video that he did not want to disclose more details on why Andrea may have walked off in the early hours of August 13, but added that she “was pretty upset, pretty wound up when she left walking."

There were security cameras in the area, Leonard said, but “a lot of those cameras weren’t active.”

Leonard said Andrea made some phone calls between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m., in the area where she was last seen. She was asking for a ride, he said. But the cell phone has “not been active” since then and they have not been able to ping it.

The investigator said that Andrea has friends all over Louisville, parts of Southern Indiana and is a “very well-liked young lady.” He added that her children are the “limelight of her life.”

The Missing in America organization said Andrea is the first member of the group to have ever gone missing.

Andrea is described as a white female, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, approximately 190 pounds, with light brown hair. She was last seen wearing a light-colored tank top and white shorts.

Anyone with information on Andrea Knabel’s whereabouts is asked to contact investigator Tracy Leonard at 502-618-9337, investigator Dan Washington at 502-722-8181, Missing Person Recovery Specialist Nancy Schaefer Smith at 502-500-3026 or the Louisville Metro Police Department at 502-574-LMPD.

Louisville mom Andrea Knabel dedicated to finding missing people has disappeared

"My life's not the same right now without her," said her sister, Erin Feckler who added, "Just randomly it'll hit you where you'll get really upset."

"It was a total disappearance," Mike Knabel said, adding, "I'm hoping she didn't come out on a busy thoroughfare… and take a ride with someone to go to someone else's house and never made it and got into the wrong car."

"Just the more time that passes, the more I worry that this is it," Feckler said. "And maybe that was the last time I was going to see her. So I'm very worried."

Wow! This woman has been missing over two weeks and there is no information? I never comment but I feel so bad that this woman has been so diligent searching for missing people but her disappearance is not getting very much attention.
I heard about this case this week because it made the news in my city, several states away. So, it is getting some attention. But it won't stay in the news without information.

An American woman who volunteers for a missing persons organisation and helps locate people has herself vanished in mysterious circumstances.

Andrea Michelle Knabel, 37, was last seen leaving a relative’s home in Louisville, Kentucky, US around 1am on August 13, according to local police.

The single mother of two boys, aged six and eight, contacted a friend around 1.30am to ask for a lift but calls to her phone have since gone to voicemail, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports.

“Andrea is a very special person,” a “Finding Andrea” Facebook page states. “Her children need her home.”

Police are searching the city and surrounding areas for Andrea, a volunteer with Missing in America, a national group that works to locate missing persons.

“Andrea is not only a member, she has searched for a lot of missing people. She’s also a very good friend,” Missing in America’s founder Nancy Schaefer said in a video posted on the Finding Andrea Facebook page.

According to Ms Schaefer, volunteers from Missing in America have been coming in from all over the US to assist with the search for Andrea.

“I’m not going to stop looking for her. She’s my best friend. She’s a lot of people’s best friend,” Ms Schaefer said. “She’s one of our own and we’re going to fight for her. We’re going to find her.”

Andrea’s sister, Erin Knabel, told Dateline the pair typically “talk daily or every other day”.

Erin added that Andrea “was sad” the last time she her, but that it was out of character for her sister to walk off without telling anyone.

“She always keeps in touch with all of us, especially her children,” Erin said. “Even if she’s visiting friends.”

Erin said her sister spent her free time cooking, and the two of them did yard work together and took their children swimming.

“She is caring and thoughtful to others to a fault,” Erin told Dateline. “She is a joy to be with and my life won’t be the same until she’s back.”

Erin said Andrea had been laid off from her job at Humana, and then she was involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier this year that wrecked her car.

Since then, Andrea has been volunteering for the missing persons organisation.

In another video posted to the Finding Andrea Facebook page, private investigator Tracy Leonard said he is working on Andrea’s case, along with the Louisville Metro Police Department.

“We are looking at a couple different avenues and checking leads out daily. At this time we have no indication that leads us to believe that there has been any foul play, but we are still very early and active in our investigation,” Leonard said.

“We’re just going to continue moving forward Searching for Andrea and stating the facts as we discover them.”

Missing persons volunteer vanishes

I wonder if she had any google apps that would have tracked her location, it’s a little creepy how accurate I’ve seen that to be in other missing persons cases. It can show even which side of a street the phone was on. If her family could access that, maybe that would help get a more exact idea of her movements until the phone went off.

Her sister as well as Nancy has stated so many different scenarios from that night at this point, I'm really starting to question things as I see more and more red flags appearing because things just aren't adding up.

I'm very confused about the details. She was walking from Fincastle Rd
to Chickadee Rd? She made it to Poplar Level Rd - or not? She was near/not near an office (not a post office?!)? What area was searched yesterday??

Have been a member and reader of the site for years, but I do not post often. As a resident of Louisville, Kentucky for the past 39 years though, this case just hits too close to home for me not to offer up my two cents.....
I am concerned for Andrea, and I really hope that she is okay and found soon. However, I am a bit concerned with the fact that she was walking out and about in this area of town at 1:30 AM. It's not the most dangerous area, but it's also not one of the safest areas, either.......
Praying for Andrea...... Come home to your family and friends!

DC45E56B-DC69-40E4-A264-76AFBE21C911.jpeg Fincastle is a half circle type of street, it would have led her to poplar level if she walked north. If the report of her heading to chickadee is correct, that road is above the CC, so she would have definitely gone north on fincastle
I 65 and the fairgrounds is to the left of this image. I believe the state fair was in operation. I’m really afraid she accepted a ride from a stranger :(

I haven’t seen that either. This article says she was heading to her mom’s house, a half mile away. Did she live w/her mom? Another article says it was 30 min. later she started calling friends for a ride. What was she doing for 30 minutes if she was only 1/2 mile from her mom’s?
Sounds like she may have gotten disoriented, which makes this all the more concerning as she might not have been thinking sensibly.

Sure wish someone would find a clue, any clue.

She was last seen walking about 1 a.m. Aug. 13 in the 4000 block of Fincastle Road in Louisville's Audubon Park neighborhood, according to Tracy Leonard, a private investigator involved in the search for Knabel.

***“We have had a very productive day on the investigative side today on this case,” he said. “We’ve developed some pretty strong leads. I can’t tell you much more than that, but we are staying focused on our task.”

Leonard said he and others helping in the case had done “multiple interviews” and received potentially helpful information in the mom’s disappearance, but asked the public to continue to search for Knabel.

***Leonard told WAVE 3 News that Knabel was last seen between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Aug. 13, leaving a relative’s home on foot in the 4000 block Fincastle Road in Audubon Park.

Knabel used her phone minutes after leaving the house the morning of her disappearance, but hasn’t been heard from since. Friends also said she was too trusting.

****I’ve highlighted the details I’ve missed along the way. I need to pay better attention. I’m sure there are others I’ve missed in other articles.

The fair hasn’t started yet. Every thing I’ve seen has indicated that she was headed towards poplar level from her sisters house

I can totally see an argument at that late hour leading to someone taking off on foot. She may have gotten turned around and/or accepted a ride. But if she was headed to moms, she wouldnt need a ride, necessarily.

As are most cases, extremely odd and things won’t fall into place until she is found.
