I have way too many thoughts about this case and this guy.

Fortunately I think we all knew from the beginning he was going to be caught based on the pics they showed. There was no way someone wasn't going to see it and turn him in. I'm interested to know if they got tips immediately or if the forensic computer and cell phone investigation was the key.

IMO the motive was robbery to further his gambling addiction and the thrill of taking advantage of these women was secondary. If it was sexually based I think he would have spent some time obtaining services (I don't think he got any services?) before trying to rob them. Taking the panties as a souvenir is another way of degrading them. Choosing people on the margins of society who aren't likely to report crimes was smart (if you want to call it that), but he is a complete idiot when it comes to the use of computers, photos, and cell phone activity.

I am no longer feeling sorry for this fiance. She's had a few days to come to her senses. Now she just looks like a fool. Another case of the Anthony family syndrome? It's a set up? A cover up? The doorman did it? That email she wrote was ridiculous. Close your mouth and look at the facts. HELLO??!! You're a lucky girl.

I'm also pretty sure he has class issues. He probably grew up middle class to upper class for his area, but that's not "rich". His fiance may be rich, but I don't for a second think he comes from money (and I'm questioning her college grades since she's off to med school in St. Kitts!). He's probably jealous of what they have. Maybe it feeds some of his aggression.

One more thing, I see "innocent until proven guilty" thrown around a lot on WS, not necessarily on this thread. The presumption of innocence is a legal theory and NONE OF US are required to presume he's innocent for one minute. It's only in a court of law with a jury. We are free to say he's guilty all we want. And I'm here to proclaim this psycho loser GUILTY. :furious:

I'm not even sure the fiancee is rich; I read an article where they referred to her home as a "modest" rancher. Of course--it's possible they have money and just live modestly, which is cool. Unfortunately I didn't save the link, but the article was about her father and his reactions.

Someone told me they heard,I have no idea from what source, that Markoff's dad did not attend his hearing because he didn't want to take the day off of work!! Are you kidding me? People couldn't wait a day to get their cavities filled? Even if I knew my kid was guilty as sin,I think I would at least attend his 1st hearing.
Not making an excuse for this creep, but wonder what his home life was like?

I do feel for his fiance. She played no role in his double life, imo. Her reaction appears pretty normal to me for a woman with her life and dreams just ripped out from under her plus having to face that her soon to be husband is a monster. One day she was marrying a med student and the next...she was looking at the ultimate betrayal. She didn't know this man at all. Her first inclination is to stand beside him because she can't see it being true. She was planning a wedding with her perfect man while he was out attacking and murdering women. As this slowly sinks in, she will come to terms with the facts. Give her a bit more time to go from bride to barely surviving. (I don't see a parallel with the A fam here.)

Although I'm fed up with people using denial as an excuse for bad behavior, I think it's normal for people to go through denial for a reasonable amount of time.

I'm confused whether this is his father or step-father. I thought I read he had a stepfather.

But that speaks volumes that no one shows up for the hearing. Weird.

I wonder why no one called him on his gambling addiction. His life is OVER, thrown away, and he had great potential. How many did he take with him?

I won't be surprised to find his family has been taken by him repeatedly. They may not be supportive right now because of the collateral damage he left behind. He may have already robbed them blind.

I agree it does speak volumes when no one shows up for his hearing. Are they afraid of the media crush? Do they know more about him which will come out in the future against him? It does raise many questions.

It was just reported on FOX News Channel that Markoff is in a catatonic state and has been moved to isolation.

Thats pretty convenient. I'm not sure I am buying it.
As for the father/stepfather thing. I think the father might be the dentist and his last name is Markoff. The mother has a different last name, but not sure about who the step dad is. Are there siblings, anybody know? I always love to know the family dynamics.

If he was on suicide watch, wouldn't he already be in isolation? Catatonic state. Interesting.

Don't forget he is a med student...he knows the basics of psychological/behavioral problems which he could try to use for an Insanity Defense. ;)

No, absolutely no parallel with the A family! This is a naive, happy young woman who probably only saw the best in everyone.
I hope she eventually realizes how lucky she was to get away from him and I hope she finds someone normal for a spouse.

The only parallel that I can possibly draw to the Anthony's is her initial public denial to Good Morning America:

"A police officer in Boston, or many, is trying to make big bucks by selling this false story to the TV stations. What else is new?"

I find this to be offensive. I can't imagine what it would be like to go to sleep one night, planning a beautiful wedding and dreaming of my future as a doctor and a doctor's wife and waking up being the fiancee of an accused murderer. However, I would like to think that my initial reaction would be to defend my beloved in the strongest way possible without disparaging/libeling/slandering law enforcement. MOO

I guess I'm missing something... Can someone explain why the income level of Markoff, his fiancee and their families are relevant? TIA!

It isn't really-- but on this thread, there was some discussion because the newspapers (I believe it was the NY Daily News, but I'm not sure) had said that Markoff was a well-to-do "preppy" type with affluent parents. Some sleuthers know the area where he came from and stated that it was not an affluent area, and that his fiancee's family had the money. It's all in some earlier posts.
That's all.
A killer is a killer, but sometimes there is some interest in knowing what kind of background he/she comes from---sort of like Jack The Ripper. Was he an aristocrat? That kind of thing.

What is TIA ? thanks

I have to go back and reread this thread because I missed where this guys Mother works for a casino. Because I really don't want to (It's Friday, have poured my first glass of wine, and the temps here hit 75. *So* happy and feeling lazy), could you share which casino it is? I know of no casino in Upstate NY, but there are some across the border. Meaning, Montreal. However, that is at least 5-6 hours away from Albany.

As I mentioned before, Foxwoods is less than 2 hours away from Boston and the Mohegan Sun another 45 minutes from Foxwoods. If this guy had a gambling problem, it would fit into his hitting up (robbery) someone in Warwick. A buck and then quick hop onto Route 95 into CT. I have no doubt he has done this many times.

As far as being "catatonic"? Pul-eeze. No one goes into a state like that random. To be fair, perhaps he is having a major guilt trip and has bottomed out, as it were. That said, he is still responsible and had conscience choices that he made. No free ride from me...

(I'm joining you in my first glass as well -- it is a beautiful night here in New England [and we deserve it]!)

The casino is called Turning Stone, and it's in Verona, NY. Verona is 2 hours from Albany and less than 20 minutes from Sherrill, the suspect's home town. I know it's been around for a while because my brother and his fraternity brothers used to go there from Schenectady -- and that was more years ago than he'd care to admit...

I have not actually been to the Turning Stone casino itself, but they own a hotel nearby,(its owned by Native Americans)that my sons' hockey teams used to stay at. Funny thing is,one time we were there and it was obvious to all the parents that one of the rooms was occupied by a woman providing,"female company" to men folk. She seemd very nice.
The biggest city nearby is Utica, then Syracuse. Central NY is alittle bit of an economiclly depressed area,IMO,even before the rest of the nation was.
