Gov'na Chris Christie confirms one casualty (live via phone)
We know the train came into the station at a high rate of speed
All known so far. Investigation ensues
AG coordinating with NTSB and other Federal partners
Engineers to inspect for structure integrity, before more known
Other than Hoboken, Path and other lines working
Working to help commuters to deal with going through Hoboken by other means
Engineer, hoping he'll survive. Not known why in critical. How he suffered those injuries
(missed some buffering)
Count on no risk before it considered safe.
No indication of time frame when open again

Previously reported, apparently, transit plans for updating the overall NJ/NY state systems are lagging and deadline have been extended to 2018
(automated breaks system?)

broadcatify has released some intial call ins. but no link casue tv station only played a cllip live

train was running late

The confirmed death was a woman who was reportedly waiting on the platform.

Among those most seriously injured were the train’s engineer, who was in the front car when it slammed into the wall. He was reported to be in critical condition.

The most serious injuries were at the front of the train.

In May 2011, a similar accident took place at the Hoboken station when a train traveling at an excessive speed plowed into the bumper post at the end of the platform. Thirty people were injured in that accident.

“Trains normally come in at 2 or 3 mph by the time they get to the resting spot where people depart,’’ a New Jersey transit employee said. “He came in at a high rate of speed. He went straight through the bumper block, through the air, took the ceiling out.’’

The person killed was standing on the platform when the train came into the station. The train engineer, who an official said earlier was unresponsive when removed from the train, is now hospitalized.

The National Transportation Safety Board's investigation into the crash will examine similarities between this incident and a train crash that happened at the same station in May 2011,

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/29/us/new-jersey-hoboken-train-crash/

___

Five years ago, at 8:30 a.m. on May 8, 2011, a PATH train carrying about 70 passengers ran into a bumper at the end of the track while pulling into the train station in Hoboken

The National Transportation Safety Board identified two major issues leading to the 2011 collision. The Board’s report states,

[The] probable cause of the accident was the failure of the engineer to control the speed of the train entering the station. Contributing to the accident was the lack of a positive train control system that would have intervened to stop the train and prevent the collision.

I wonder if/when we'll learn more about the condition of the engineer. He's key to finding out why this train crashed.

“There are fatalities,” said a senior transportation official who did not want to be identified because he was not authorized to speak publicly. “There are a significant number of injuries. The train was going very fast. There are structural concerns about the facility.”

Train number 1614 on the Pascack Valley line failed to stop as it arrived at the terminal. It continued beyond the tracks and onto the concourse. The roof of the structure collapsed and the platform was severely damaged.

I have been to this station - it's gorgeous.

IIRC, the ferry terminal is directly below where the red circle is - see the water there with a dock jutting out? There is another ferry terminal in Hoboken, north of this, as well. Hopefully increased ferry service will provide some help for commuter during what is likely to be a long clean-up and repair process.

ETA: The ferries actually look like they are more to the right than I described....but anyway, the ferries are right by the train station and I hope the ferry service is not disrupted during repairs. Otherwise, what a mess!

Awesome it was equiped with a foward facing camera (similiar to cockpit voice recorder !

The train was going very fast

Adds just "bad" stuff

I know I am dramatic, not going terrorist , engineer mad at employer? Sucide?

I am going trying to be short, I can babble when it is something I have passion about

That is local , not NTSB, basically a big ambulance that can carry 30 or so

I dont think that could be right --engineer is the person , in the back controlling train

maybe conductor - but is not the "driver"

NJ TRANSIT will increase the number 126 bus line between Hoboken and the Port Authority bus terminal. A shuttle bus will run between Hoboken on a load-and-go basis,

NJ TRANSIT said rail service in and out of the station has been suspended. NJ TRANSIT bus and private carriers are cross-honoring rail tickets and passes.

Tonnelle Ave. to HOB terminal trains are being terminated at 2nd St. All Westside Ave to Tonnelle Ave station trains are not affected.

Hudson-Bergen light rail service has been suspended out of Hoboken as well. Commuters are advised to take the Journal Square-World Trade Center line as alternate transportation. All 8th St to HOB service is being terminated at Newport. This affects the Main/Bergen, Montclair/Boonton, North Jersey Coast and Gladstone Valley lines through the area.

The Lackawanna entrance connecting NJ TRANSIT to the PATH station is currently closed.

Metro-North said they will also be cross-honoring all NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes on their Hudson Line.

NY Waterways will be offering ferry service from Port Imperial in Weehawken to Lower Manhattan. All NJ TRANSIT tickets will be cross-honored, according to the service.

Commuters can also take the ferry from Paulus Hook in Jersey City, with drop-off points at the World Financial Center, Wall Street and 39th Street in Manhattan.

The City of Hoboken says a temporary NJ TRANSIT bus pickup and drop-off location is at Washington and Observer. The location is subject to change based on traffic conditions.

Taxi stand is closed. Street cleaning is suspended today; alternate side parking has also been suspended

Hoboken, New Jersey, Train Crashed Without Warning: Survivors

by Jon Schuppe and Corky Siemaszko

For many aboard doomed New Jersey Transit train 1614, the first hint of trouble Thursday came seconds before the crash.

Commuter Massimo Marcoccia was sitting in a vestibule and talking to a pal when he noticed that the train was coming into the Hoboken, New Jersey, station fast — and not braking...

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...ain-crashed-without-warning-survivors-n656851

When the engine is at the back, the engineer controls the train in the first car.

The engineer and a conductor were alive and among the injured, New Jersey Transit spokesman Jim Smith told Fox News. The locomotive was at the back of the train but the engineer was in the leading car, workers said.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/09/2...en-nj-station-multiple-injuries-reported.html

Respectfully, media , again , have no clue what they are reporting.

They are mixing up the conductor and the engineer.

The conductor is the flight attendant. The engineer is the pilot. The enginner is in the back, where the cockpit is. It was in push configuration.
.

The conductor is in the front , which has nothing to do with the cockpit in the rear

When in push configuration , the front of the train , is basically just another passenger coach. Identical coach as all the ones in the middle , no power no controls etc the cabin of the airplane !

Snipped for brevity.

Great! Sounds like a plan is in place fast. It will still be a headache at least for awhile, but much better than being stranded without some sort of route home for people this afternoon.
