As it stands right now, everything looks like an open and shut case. That will change as the case progresses through the trial. JMO

It almost looks like the defense is playing a long game here. Setting up issues for appeal. Not a great strategy, but in this case, what is?
1. No change of venue
2. Ineffective counsel

It may be my perspective, but Chauvin's attorney doesn't seem to bond much with his client.

I’m curious - what do you think was missed? I feel like Nelson is being careful not to come off like a jerk which might hurt his client. Or it could just be his style. He’s quite likable and I think that helps him. Given the harsh videos of his client.
Williams' presentation on stand was nearly perfect. Williams would probably be great at whatever he testifies to. Likeable, Confident. Tells a believable story.

I think defense needed to drill witness in direction of having no expert medical background and no expert police training in restraint. I'm not sure Willams' was completely accurate in his definitions of various holds. Nelson made an attempt to dismantle that but fell short. just my opinion.

Is Chauvin paying for his attorney? Is he through the police union? Just curious.

He seems like he's kind of phoning it in, imo.

(I realize this has no doubt been discussed, but quicker to ask than scroll the threads. TIA)

I believe that he was the next on the list of attorneys with the police union. Paid by the union.

24 after the hour... we are back live (2:24 eastern)... new witness... minor female when this happened... taken off video for her name etc.

Here we go with State...this is the friend of D who just testified and was in the photo in white shirt with jeans on far left of photo upthread.

She was 17 that day.

She was going to CupFoods to get a cord for her to play music on the radio. She lives in the neighborhood. She was with Karen (?Kim??) that day. She drove her g'fathers vehicle to the scene to Cup Foods.

It has happened many times before, that a killer has been found guilty of first degree murder when the victim was a known drug user and had drugs in their system or had an underlying health issue. So that doesn’t worry me too
Much. The heart problems didn’t kill him that day, the knee in the neck did. If he had a heart attack it was brought on by the stress that being pinned down by his neck to the ground caused. Heck even people without a heart condition would probably end up in cardiac arrest from being slowly suffocated in such an awful way.

The word "suffocated" that I keep seeing... I don't see such as to the scientific term. Cardiopulmonary yes... cutting off blood supply. I still need to go back and review the >1 hour post I did this am as when the two got off when no pulse (and Chauvin still on neck).. it appeared one had been holding on buttocks and the other was restraining legs.

I need to review again as I didn't see the other two on back... buttocks and legs is what I saw this am on my first pass through.

MOO

I'd agree but taking it a step further the defense should have been continuously objecting yesterday while Williams was making expert type observations. He's not an expert on weight distribution, not an expert on physiology, not an expert on psychology yet made statements pertaining to those fields. The defense failed miserably even though it would have been hard to overcome him. He was a great witness but got statements on the record he wasn't qualified to make.

You are making excellent points. Maybe Nelson doesn't have enough staff to assist him with trial prep and research. I don't understand how he failed the opportunity to dismantle.

Now testifying is a witness who was 17 at the time. She believes Chauvin put more weight on George Floyd by lifting his foot and putting his hand in his pocket.

This teen witness also shot a video, similar to the FB video, and they are showing it while she testifies -- synced and placed on top of the overhead MPD camera.

This new video is from just a slightly different angle -- and it does perhaps give a clearer view of Chauvin's placement. After listening to the prior testimony involving chokes, the jury might be looking closely at that:

Witness: I kind of knew.

Prosecutor Erin Eldridge: Knew what?

Witness: That he was dead or not breathing.

When defense attorney gets opportunity for cross examination, should focus on the hand in the pocket testimony.... if he is worth his legal degree. DC did not have his hand in his pocket... although at first glance that is what it looks like. In fact, he is wearing dark gloves and hand is resting on upper thigh.
