CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The mother of missing 11-year-old Madalina Cojocari says she believed her husband, “put her family in danger,” and maintained she didn’t know what happened to the child, court records state.

Cojocari’s mother, Diana Cojocari, and stepfather, Christopher Palmiter, were arrested Dec. 17 after failing to report the Cornelius girl as missing for almost three weeks.

WBTV has obtained another arrest sheet from law enforcement detailing probable cause.

A detective wrote that when he questioned Diana Cojocari, she said she “believed her husband put her family in danger,” and maintained she didn’t know what happened to Madalina.

She also allegedly said family in Moldova told her to call the police but she still hesitated.

Diana Cojocari reportedly told the detective that her daughter did not have a phone and that a bookbag with some of her clothes were missing.

She also told the detective that her daughter didn’t have any friends or family she would be with.

so mom's story is some combination of the following:
1) I thought my husband took her to visit his family out of state
2) I thought my husband hid her away
3) I think my husband has put our family in danger (bad guys took her and it's his fault)
4) Some clothes and a backpack are missing (it's M's fault - she must have run off)

mmm hm

"... an area blocked with plywood off the kitchen." Wondering if it was a floor to ceiling wall of plywood or just a sheet of 4x8 plywood, maybe blocking off the laundry room or a breakfast nook. Assume that detectives have already investigated this bizarre home remodeling project. Did they keep her in a makeshift jail cell? moo

This does sound less like an apartment and more like an enclosure of some sort. Could a person freely get in and out of the "area blocked with plywood off the kitchen?

So she is leaning into maybe the child ran away? I mean I guess it could be possible but I can't see an 11yr old living out life on her own in the streets. She could also be hinting the husband had her pack a bag to go with him to his family home.

In case anyone wondered how you'd make a second apartment by blocking off part of the kitchen (which sounds like a load of horsesnot to me, but whatever)

The kitchen is not that big, although I could see how it would be easy to block off, but I don't get the point of it. Zillow says it is a 4bd. Seems like plenty of room when it is a family of 3. Even if the stockings show that there is two other children, a family of 5 can fit in a 4bd.

I am more curious if the area has recently been demo'd as in blood or other biological evidence is missing that was there once. I want to know what it looks like behind the plywood. Is it just framing with no drywall in an area that once was finished? Is there flooring? Is it new or is the old flooring missing?

This link shows interior pictures (23 photos) because I am curious exactly where on the house floor plan the plywood blocked are off the kitchen was located. https://www.movoto.com/realestate/18413-victoria-bay-dr-cornelius-nc-28031-411_3301637

I suspect it was the bonus room located just past the fridge and stove area (image 13 of 23). This would not be large enough to be turned into and "apartment" MOO if this is the area LE saw and that was the excuse given for it being barricaded no wonder they were suspicious.

Yes, I agree. In the RE photo, I can not tell if there is a door on that doorway between kitchen stove and other room. I think this is where plywood blockade was installed.

yeah looks like what would be a dining room usually. But there is only one way in and one way out, so why the plywood? You would just add a door & frame. I was thinking it was the section in front of the kitchen island, like he was building a box. The dining room area would seem easier to block off. Wonder what was in that area... was he building a "man cave"?

Speculation:

If I’m trying to distance myself from my partner because said partner is really into, say, Revival Flame Ministries and talking about evil and such, and that’s just not my thing, and I’m spending more and more time away from home and don’t really know what’s going on with my partner and partner’s progeny, but I still need a place to sleep and keep my stuff, maybe I would consider blocking of part of my house for my use only, and maybe I would choose an area by the kitchen and garage for egress. But I’ll tell you one thing, and I am very firm on this: I’m going to need a bathroom. So if CP was making himself a kind of man cave/apartment, there should be a potty plan in there somewhere.

I saw the Zillow photos and bathroom pictures, but I couldn’t tell where they were located aside from the master on the second floor.

I don’t think CP is a great guy. He should have reported M missing and deserves to be in jail, but I’m not so sure he knew/knows what happened to her. I actually kind of believe the guy about the “apartment.” Big question, though. Who was lighting and tending the fires?

All MOO.

From the article:

“Authorities visited the home at one point and found an area in the kitchen blocked off with plywood, according to the report.

When asked about it, Palmiter allegedly told the officers that he was going to make a separate apartment.”

WHAT??
To make a separate apartment... or a holding cell. MOO.

IMO mom was oddly passive in telling LE she thought her husband put the family in danger. What does that even mean? That he threatened her and/or Madalina? Then why not just say that? I sure hope she didn't get some weird thought in her head and decided to send Madalina to "a better place" - and I don't mean to someone's house. MOO

Holding cell was what I was thinking at first too... but for who? Mom? Daughter? Both?

FWIW, I've never come across a case where a parent had hidden a child away for any reason whatsoever. It always ends with a dead child and sadly I don't think Madalina's case will be any different.
The only case that I can think of is that of Shannon Matthews. She was hidden with a family friend but that was all for money. Sadly, I agree that this case ends up with a dead child.

"What the grandfather of the missing girl in the USA says. Who does he think is guilty?"

(run through Google Translate)

"Even though he hasn't seen either his daughter Diana or Mădălina for a long time, he was talking to them through social networks, and the news that his granddaughter had disappeared left him stunned"
...
"Victor Cojocari said that every time he talked to the girls, they seemed happy, so he had no suspicions. The man admits, however, that Diana's husband was against her communicating with her relatives in Moldova, and most of the time they talked when the man was not around."
...
"Victor Cojocari says he communicated with his daughter at the end of October, and since then she has not called him."
...
"We talked, [Madalina] knows a little Romanian, she greeted me, she used to come and greet me all the time, hello, I didn't have any problems like that, the last time we spoke was somewhere at the end of October."
