NC vs. Raven Abaroa ~ the Trial 3

Greetings!
Quick Intro: I stumbled upon WS sometime after the ABC Primetime special about Janet's case. (It caught my attention because we went to the same college and I saw her around campus. We didn't run in the same circle of friends, she was an athlete, I was a theater major but occasionally our paths crossed and she always had a smile and seemed very kind and level headed. Just a nice person.) I first heard of her death a few months after she was killed. I remember thinking how awful it must have been for Raven to come home and find her like that. Years after that I saw the TV special and wasn't sure what to think. I went online and read everything I could find (hence stumbling across WS) and watched the NC Wanted interview that Raven did. It was that interview that sort of hit home that something was 'off' about him. (Not that Vanessa's side of things didn't tell me that already, from Primetime, but his side wasn't really presented ... so the NC Wanted video filled in the gaps for me). I was relieved to hear he was arrested in 2010 and have been following the coverage of the trial for the last three weeks. I am really hoping and praying that the jury will be able to put all of the pieces together (but I am worried that it only takes one person to doubt his guilt to end with a hung jury).

Did I hear correctly that they found a hard drive with Martin Marietta info on it? Where was that located? Because in my mind that puts a spin on things. Hypothetically, Raven could have gotten Janet to help with his Embezzlement scheme at EuroSport. I think he was very frightening and very controlling ... and it was testified by someone earlier that she told her boss, I think, that Raven had planned on bringing checks a few at a time to pay for the shipments he'd ordered. Ask yourself, who would process those checks into the system or pass them along to the person that had that type of access? Janet was his 'in' in the accounting department. (I do not think she would have done anything illegal on purpose, that she knew about it all up front, but she may have taken the checks - had he followed through on his word - and quietly put them into the system ... so that he could avoid going to jail and that her son wouldn't have his father locked up.) She might not have liked it but she may have seen it as him trying to atone for doing something so dumb in the first place. (Again, this is all theory).
As far as I know, her last job was with Martin Marietta Materials. They're tied into Locheed Martin. LM is a defense contractor. (I have a relative that used to work for that company in a different state). They've built tanks and missiles and all sorts of weaponry. Remember that Janet told him "I can't do this again"? What if he was pressuring her to help him purchase items from Martins so he could sell them on the side? (Not saying he's a weapons dealer wannabe but am saying if he had manipulated her once into helping him try and cover something up, maybe he tried to do it again, he doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes). And maybe this time she said no.
Sorry for rambling (and lack of proper paragraphing).

Thank you so much; I thought that was it; that they didn't recover her lenses meaning she wasn't in bed ready to sleep. I always remove mine before I retire.

Raven stated Janet was ready for bed and that's why he locked the dogs in the shed. He said she was watching general hospital in bed and in bed.

Janet took out her contacts, brushed her teeth and washed her face before bed from what I have heard.

He told people he found her dead in bed. Janet wouldn't go to bed without making sure the doors were locked. She wouldn't go to bed with contacts in her eyes. She wouldn't have left her wedding rings sitting by the sink, she lost them before and ONLY took them off to wash dishes. She was sitting in the office when killed, not in bed.

He told people she was hot, then turned cold, he told people she was found murdered in bed, he told people she talked to him and said why does it hurt so bad, he told people her lips were blue, he told people she was warm, cold, shot, dead.

The key to this entire case is the defendant himself!

It was testified to that Janet had ZERO knowledge of the embezzlement scheme. Janet was not asked to leave Eurosports. As a matter of fact, her job was completely and totally safe and they did not want her to leave. This was thoroughly and completely investigated by the Hillsborough Police.

Janet wouldn't steal a donut let alone help Raven steal. This is a fact!

Your theory sounds eerily like a rumor that I heard that Raven tried telling someone that the Chicago Mafia took out Janet because he could not longer sell stolen goods. Seriously...whack job material. I'm sure he's even speculated one of of WS people did it to set his stupid a$$ up.

What Janet could not do again was handle being pregnant while married to him, while he is out cavorting again with another one of the Jennifers in his life or whomever he was trying to have sex with atm. She was tired of dealing with his bs, tired of being beaten down mentally and verbally and monetarily. He lived like a single man, he wanted his freedom, but he wasn't about to let her take Kaiden and leave, because he wanted his mini-me.

Janet was tired of being his door mat, tired of putting up with his crap and was done with him. She had Kaiden to worry about and I believe she didn't want to have Raven influence him and she didn't want Raven to rub off on him and was ready to leave him and then she found out she was pregnant. He told HIS family Janet was pregnant, and she didn't get to her family. Worse, this didn't allow her to have her first MOTHER'S DAY. Kaiden is the one thing that started bringing the old Janet back.

This is the same piece of crap that tried hinting that Janet's ex-boyfriend who was only a friend was the father of Kaiden. That guy was married and never was in North Carolina. The defense keeps bringing up Janet's friend, who is actually married to Janet's sister, he keeps bringing up a married man with children who was friends with Raven and Janet.

These red herrings are doing nothing to help the case.

Only one person was responsible for the affairs, only one person had affairs, only Raven was responsible for the embezzlement and only one person was responsible for the murder of Janet Marie Christiansen Abaroa and that man whether he is found guilty or innocent is Raven Samuel Peters Abaroa!!!

He told people she KILLED herself. Raven said a lot of stupid things. Clear up to the video he made of himself in 2010, he was still spouting really stupid things. I'm a little amazed that he hasn't demanded to be allowed to take the stand. We all know what a dumb move that would be on his part, but of all the things that Raven is..... smart isn't one of them.

From WRAL's 4pm internet news today 5/16/13

Contact lenses found when Janet Abaroa's body was exhumed

Durham, N.C. — An exhumation of Janet Abaroa's body more than five years after she was found stabbed to death in her Durham home revealed that she had been wearing contacts when she was buried.

Dr. Charles Zwerling, a Goldsboro ophthalmologist who examined the remains of the 25-year-old's eyes, testified Thursday in the first-degree murder trial of her husband, Raven Abaroa, that he found fragments of Acuvue lenses in samples he received from Durham police.

Raven Abaroa, facing life in prison if convicted, told police investigators that Janet Abaroa was getting ready to get in bed when he left for a soccer game sometime around 8 p.m. on April 26, 2005.

When he arrived home, sometime after 10:30 p.m., he has said he found her on the floor in an upstairs office.

Witnesses, including Janet Abaroa's sister and best friend, have testified that she always took out her contact lenses before she went to bed. A police investigator testified that Raven Abaroa also told him that she removed them before bed.

Defense attorney Amos Tyndall, who says police ignored evidence that might have pointed to someone else committing the crime, objected to jurors seeing photos of the exhumation and of Janet Abaroa's eyes – photos he described as "unnecessarily gory."

Raven Abaroa became visibly upset, his face turning red and eyes tearing up as attorneys talked about the matter.

The state hasn't offered a clear motive for her death but has painted Raven Abaroa as a controlling husband with a pattern of verbal abuse against women, including his second wife, who testified that he shoved her against a wall during an argument on the day of her bridal shower.

Prosecutors appear to be close to wrapping up its case. Testimony lasted for less than two hours Thursday and will resume Monday, when they plan to call a computer forensics examiner to testify about information on Janet Abaroa's work computer.

Assistant District Attorney Charlene Coggins-Franks told Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson that the hard drive from the computer, as well as a PDA found in Raven Abaroa's SUV, were found Thursday morning sealed in a locked cabinet at the Durham Police Department.

Court is recessed until Monday to give both the state and defense a chance to analyze the items.

I keep reading these articles about the State not offering a motive, I see a ton of motives.

Freedom to have sex with whomeever he wants to whenever he wants. The fact he couldn't keep a job, he had the warrant for the fight with the soccer ref and couldn't get a job in that area, he was under indictment for embezzlement, he knew getting a job wasnt' happening. He supplemented his income with the embezzled shoes and that well was dry, he couldn't afford the house, his precious VX was going to have to be sold, he had so many damn toys and couldn't keep up. Janet was pregnant again, and she wasn't going to be the perfect Barbie. He wanted to continue with his soccer and volleyball league...on what $$$? Janet was going to be the only person working, again.

They were still paying off Kaiden at that time, the Accura, his Mother was paying his Time Warner Phone bill. He really didn't like being in that area and wanted to go back home to his Momma and Janet was going to end up leaving him and wouldn NEVER let him have Kaiden and she was pregnant again.

A few months after Janet's murder he got a young girl pregnant and when the girl wanted to give the baby up for adoption, he tried to block it. This was mentioned by his attorney Mani. Well, doesn't that make Raven look like a great guy and a great father? She was 17 folks and his wife was murdered, that girl was smart and I'm glad she never looked back.

Heck, in 2010 in his very creepy video when he taped his interview with Sole, he mentioned trying to sue Websleuths for libel and the internet people for slander and then wanting three million dollars and using $2 million or "2/3rds if you will" to fight this (meaning us interwebz) people....and some of it for housing and a future for Kaiden and then a portion of whatever is left so he can get Janet's name for "recognized at Southern Virigina". Again, what amount of this was going to find the real killer?

$500,000 to a guy that was sinking was a great motive. He was ready to reinvent himself and that would make it possible.

Motive.....is written all over this case.

There is NO WAY Mani Dexter or Amos Tyndall will let him take the stand...No way on earth!

Agreed... and with motive, the means and opportunity have been there all along, so I think the puzzle is actually not as hard to put together as I thought it would be in the beginning of the trial. The PT closing should be clear and easy to follow.

Let me just say one thing about Donna Jackson. She's a Rock Star in my opinion. Very professional, very prepared, extremely knowledgeable, and she did a great job in her role in this case. She was extremely respectful to both sides and never stumbled over words in her explanations. Nice job Donna!

Welcome, FallingStars!

I think your points are interesting, but I'd be SHOCKED to learn if Janet was involved in the embezzlement. If anything, I think it'd be interesting to see if she was researching battered women's shelters or anything like that - see if she was planning to leave, which is why Raven chose that particular week to kill her. That said, I think he was planning the murder for months, but I'd be surprised to find anything that implicated her in the embezzlement. Raven likes control too much to let somebody else in on his criminal ventures.

I absolutely agree! She has been the most impressive person, of all, in this entire trial. The Durham PD is very lucky to have her.

What else could they realistically have when you use common sense. What exactly did they have in the Jason Young case? What will they have in the Drew Peterson Case with Stacy? Nothing...

These crimes committed by sociopaths have planning, premeditation, time, on their hands. He had plenty of time to get rid of the smoking gun, his knife, get rid of the clothes he was wearing.

Janet would have fought tooth and nail. Her and Raven got into a bit of a fight and she jumped on his vehicle for crying out loud. You think she would have let someone upstairs near her son and not fight?

The finger wasn't a defensive wound. All you have to do is look at it the position of it, it's an obvious reflex wound.

The CSI effect always seems to come into play in cases like this.

If it was a druggie off the street, there would have been a whole lot more foreign dna, if it was Raven in a rage, there would have still been a struggle. She would have fought Raven tooth and nail for her life, because she didn't want Raven taking Kaiden. I pray the jurors realize that murders by a sociopath that you live with are the hardest cases to solve because of the planning, premeditation. Raven had 6 months of college, he's not the brightest guy when it comes to school, but he's street savvy, he's managed to steal from Hewelett Packard and get away with it, he got caught at Eurosports, but he stolen again at Canyon Cycles. He's done so many things and he continually gets away with it.

This was cold, calculated, premeditated. Hopefully the jurors push April 25, 2005 more. Read this, and tell me his state of mind on April 25. He's a planner, he wanted to start over.

If I were a bird... Wait, I am!
The way in which I was raised is a direct reflection of the person I am today. In my early childhood I began to develop strengths that would help me in both my personal and professional life. I learned how to adapt to change, become outgoing and personable, and become aggressive in all my endeavors. The same experiences which made me strong also created weakness. As I was forced to grow up quickly I began to overlook my education, second guess myself, and loose focus easily. The strengths and weaknesses I developed in my childhood have played a role in my personal and professional life. As I grow in wisdom I am making efforts to improve upon my weaknesses while developing my strengths.

While under the age of five years old I saw my parents go through a very difficult divorce. My mother was left to care for 4 children under the age of six. As young as 7 years old I remember having the desire to help ease her pains. I decided that if I could grow up fast then my mom would have less to worry about and I could help her accomplish what she needed to have an orderly house. I began by being comfortable with change. During all my childhood I was constantly challenged with change. Our routine regularly changed with our financial situation, our home, and our surroundings.

As a child I often didn’t know what the next meal would bring. It seemed one month we were dining out every night and the next month we were receiving food assistance from our church. I remember being able to buy $400 worth of clothes for the beginning of my school year from Mervyns during my 3rd grade year. However, in the 6th grade I learned to maximize my budget of $100 by shopping at TJ Maxx. This uncertainly could have caused me to have insecurities or embarrassments about my situation. Instead, I became accustomed to change and comfortable adapting to my surroundings. As I have grown up I have found that my ability to adapt to change has become a valuable strength in my life. By adapting to change in my personal life I have been able to not stress about change in atmosphere. When times have been good I’ve dined in the finest of restaurants and when times have been tough I’ve been able to utilize coupons and eating in to stay within my budget. The same can be said in my professional life. During 2001 my company budget was downsized from a $3k monthly spending budget to $750. Most of my team members had built their sales around spending the $3k with golf outings, dinner parties and other activities to secure business. While I did some of the same activities I found it very easy to limit my spending and during our next quarterly sales meeting I was the only team member to stay within budget.

In addition to financial challenges in my childhood, I was challenged with making new friends more often than most children. Having lived in 10 different houses and attending 10 different schools by the time I was seventeen I had no choice but to adapt or be lost in the shuffle. The constant change in schools made me quite the extravert. Because time was precious and I didn’t know what was around the corner I didn’t have time to be shy. I had to be energetic and outgoing to attract friends and relationships. I have used this strength to benefit my personal life as well as my professional life. In my personal life I have never been afraid to make new acquaintances and in turn have many friends. At work I have been successful at sales because I am very personable and can relate to others very well.

One of the strengths my mother possessed was aggressiveness and the unwillingness to accept circumstances as final. Although times were hard, my mother always instilled in us the desire to aggressively seek after our dreams. If we wanted something bad enough, all we had to do was work hard for it. When I was 15 years old I wanted to be viewed as the #1 goalie in the state. At the regional ODP (Olympic Development Program) camp the national coach of our age group evaluated my skills and said I struggled at communicating with my team and distributing the ball. Over the next year I woke up every morning before school and practiced 100 punts and 100 goal kicks. In the afternoon I threw the ball up against a wall 100 times. At practice I spent more time listening to how my coach communicated to the team so I could do the same from the field. In only one year I was the top goalie in Utah (Starting for our ODP team, of course, my buddy Darius wasn't playing ODP this year and he was my only competition I think) and went on to achieve success as an ODP player and a college athlete. The same aggressiveness to reach perfection in my youth has strengthened me in my professional endeavors. I recall my first time interviewing with companies in DC. I was offered positions at 6 of the 7 places I interviewed. Most of the managers directly commented on how they admired my aggressiveness to get in the door and that is what attracted them to me. This aggressiveness also allows me to not give up when others might throw in the towel!

The same circumstances which strengthened my personality also gave way to weakness in my life. While I was adapting to change I felt like I was reinventing the wheel too often. The constant change of surroundings leads me to loose focus easily and this has proven to be a weakness in my life. Early in my career I found myself changing goals every few months which lead to changing jobs often and consequently I was often moving. While I changed schools a lot in my youth I never had a real foundation in education. Additionally, my mom was successful and undereducated, which strengthened my belief that education was not important. However, I now find that my lack of education leaves me narrow minded and can limit my interaction with co-workers and friends. Finally, because I was moving so much as a child I did have some insecurity. One insecurity was second guessing myself. Without constant friendships I was always afraid to ask for help and in that frame of thought I often wondered if what I was doing was right. In my personal and professional life my biggest weakness is uncertainty because through second-guessing myself I do not take a lot of risk and to be successful in my line of work you must be willing to take risks.

A strength which is evident in this writing is my ability to recognize weakness. Through this recognition of weakness I am able to focus on changing behaviors to better prepare myself for a successful future. I do not like to spend time reflecting on weakness, but as I acknowledge what my weaknesses are I also identify ways to improve on them. To help me keep focused I use Franklin Covey software to organize my projects, goals, tasks, and calendar down to the simplest of steps. I have also committed to continued learning. I have read many management and leadership books and started participating in group discussions at work and at home to broaden my knowledge and strengthen my decision making. These two things will allow me to not second guess myself and feel adequately educated. While my childhood brought on these weaknesses, I feel like my ability to adapt to change will allow me to overcome my weaknesses as I grow and mature in my personal and professional life.

In summary, I feel my strengths and weaknesses have been molded from the way I was raised. Through the events of my childhood I was able to develop strengths that not only helped me survive my adolescence, but have proven to be a great attribute to the development of my personal and professional life. I also understand that I am able to change my weaknesses through my ability to adapt and that by doing so I will achieve success.

A few decent points here, but he is definitely a sociopath. Whether his childhood is his excuse or that he's just a , doesn't matter. He killed her.

Agreed... and with motive, the means and opportunity have been there all along, so I think the puzzle is actually not as hard to put together as I thought it would be in the beginning of the trial.

Donna Jackson did do a great job. She was asked again regarding the blood found in the Durango. This testimony is confusing to me, but what I gathered was there was blood found in Raven's vehicle. The leuco crystal violet was used to determine it was blood, but it rendered it useless for DNA testing. I thought Raven never went into the vehicle, he just pounded on the window. This evidence can't be used because they couldn't do further testing? Did anyone get this information? Was the testimony she checked with someone (SBI?) regarding the use of leuco crystal violet and using it to determine if something was blood would or would not degrade the sample for further dna analsyses and was told it was safe and later found out leuco crystal violet does degrade or destroy the evidence for further analyses?

If the DNA was able to be tested and it was Janet's, DT would have just said, well he did go inside the vehicle after he found her and tried to save her or whatever it is he supposedly did and he forgot, or they would have said the cops planted it anyhow, so though I thought wow that's the smoking the gun... the point is moot. It was confirmed as blood, but no confirmation on who's blood. Unless, of course, the killer was able to get into Raven's car while he's in the house and drop Janet's blood in it, without Raven's knowledge, all while not leaving any other evidence in his car >.< so no matter what defense could have tried to confuse this testimony, whether or not it was Janet's blood, so even if it was a partial smoking gun that would have been confused in testimony anyhow.

I love how the DT always uses the wrong dates, dates, sequence to try to confuse the jurors. I do like that most of the time the witnesses are able to confirm the DT is trying to muddy the information and correct the misinformation, I just hope the jurors are getting it too.

Ina’maqki’u wi’dishi’anun...........please, would someone at the trial bring this Ravenstree post to light. I really want to hear Tyndall try to say this. :D

Awww.... borndem!

Now I feel like kind of a heel.

Welcome Fallingstars! Please forgive my lack of manners. I got excited about another new poster and didn't even bother to notice that this was indeed your first post.

Please let me know if you need any assistance navigating the site. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and throwing out some questions and observations. You'll find many of us are protective of Janet and I hope we didn't frighten you away with the comments we made defending her honor. She really was a kind and gentle soul.

I hope you continue to ask questions and share your opinions with us.

WS is a wonderful community. I went away for a long time and came back when this trial started. I forgot how many really great conversations that I've had with some interesting and outstanding people here. Especially in the fun threads in the private forums. We can be pretty silly at times and one can always find a place to just VENT over life's twists and turns. Anyway..... welcome.

But that could simply be disproven by LE finding her in the office, and the blood evidence that she was killed there.
What am I missing?

I think his first thought here was that if she was found in bed, that would make it look like the murder happened an hour or so later than it did, thereby making it "impossible" for RA to have done it. Another one of those half-baked ideas that should have never been born. And, as I have said before, I don't think The Raven was all that smart. I mean, really, it's just stupid on its face. Not good for the home team Nevermores.
