“Detectives believe that he began working for Mr. Saleh when he was 16, and eventually started managing some of his finances as well as taking care of personal matters, like caring for his dog.”
He seems to have rented a luxury AirBnb to impress his girlfriend.I wonder why he was staying with the female and not in his Brooklyn residence?
I can't imagine what his birthday friend is thinking now. I doubt she had a clue of what Haspil was capable of. She must be blindsided and in shock beyond belief.
unless....( just my late night cynicism)
Yes, maybe he looked up to or even idolized Saleh. He was given a huge amount of responsibility at a very young age.I’ll be curious if/when it’s released what Haspil’s salary was working for Saleh. Since he’d been working with Saleh while in high school (presumably, because I read he was 16), One would think it may have started as a mentor/big brother type of thing and as he matured, Saleh gave him increased responsibilities.
IMO, the scenario was probably that FS befriended this young man and felt he was doing him a favour giving him work and encouragement, that he was being generous. And when Haspil stole from him, FS continued to want to be his benefactor, rather than destroy his life by reporting him to police.
Unfortunately, IMO, bringing someone into your penthouse home, letting them handle your money, can create envy rather than gratitude, especially in someone so young and immature as Haspil. They may realize you are only giving them a pittance of what you have, so they are no longer grateful, they just want to be rich like you are, and have the stuff and nice life that you have. And if they see you being careless because you have so much, why shouldn't they take what they want?
IMO, he killed FS because he thought that way he could keep the money he had stolen, no one would ever know about it, and he could steal more stuff like FS's credit cards.
I think it was greed rather than hatred.

At an arraignment held just after midnight, Haspil, 21, Saleh’s executive assistant, was ordered held without bail on charges of second-degree murder for the gruesome crime on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
Surveillance video shows Haspil at a Home Depot purchasing the saw and cleaning supplies found Tuesday at the crime scene, Manhattan assistant district attorney Linda Ford said at the arraignment.
Clothing the killer was seen wearing on surveillance footage from the address matched garments found in Haspil’s Brooklyn home, and investigators were also able to digitally track Hasil to and from the crime scene, Ford added.
“He is on video surveillance before and after the crime. He has been identified by at least two individuals from the videotape.”
Haspil then left the apartment with Saleh’s body inside.
The next day, he allegedly visited Home Depot to buy the saw and other supplies he is believed to have used to cut off Saleh’s limbs.
Judge Jonathan Svetkey ordered Haspil to be held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 17.
