Does anyone know/remember how the taxi drivers were identified so quickly? I imagine Joran had their info with him? so he could supposedly get his property back from them in exchange for cash later, but I don't remember hearing that...

The whole taxi story makes zero sense to me - if he did have a bunch of SF's money with him. Why on earth would he tell them he killed someone AND not use some of the money to pay them to get away? Did he think he could just go next door to Chile and resume gambling at a new casino? His escape attempt is almost more bizarre than the crime itself.

I totally agree. Very bizarre unless he actually thought for once there
was no place left run ... and he couldnt finance a quick trip to the South
Pole and/or Thailand/Amsterdam, without going through customs. He could have
hired a plane to drop him off somewhere in the Amazon, but I doubt Joran could
adjust to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle ?

This report is from Wed., June 2, when LE first put out the search for Joran, and they already have contact with the taxi drivers.

"In a conversation with RPP, told the stranger paid [1500 soles] per shuttle service between Nazca and Tacna , and then paid 280 soles to be taken to Arica."

http://translate.google.com/transla...ra-que-lo-saquen-del-pais-noticia_269525.html

This totals approx. $650. (Note: the English translation is wrong - it translates 'mil 500 soles' [1500] to '500 thousand dollars' instead of one thousand 500 dollars. It does this every time a currency amount is mentioned.)

In his confession, JVDS says that the taxi drivers wanted him to take a bus into Chile, but when he asked them to take him they wanted more than the 280 soles that they told LE....that's when he gave them his watch, etc.

I think in his confession Joran states that he had paid another taxi 600 soles (about $200) to drive him from Lima to Nazca.

I had to look these spots up on the map. Nazca is just under 200 mi. south of Lima. Tacna is on the Lima side of the border (about 450 mi. south of Nazca); Arica is on the Chile side.

IIRC, Chile LE got word from immigration that this is where Joran crossed into Chile on Mon., May 31. I imagine they then also got the names of the taxi driver brothers....and somehow LE located them when they returned home. I believe they were from Ica, a town near Nazca.

How did they establish that contact? Any reports on that? Radio? Did the drivers
make the contact?

Me neither. Me too! :D

But I did get news this morning that a cold case project Ive been
working on has been nominated for an Emmy. So Im mello and
a bit pleased with myself tonight.

Oh... that's terrific, jwarner! That's quite an achievement to be nominated and I'll keep my fingers crossed that you win . :)

No doubt! But it's amazing what they might contemplate doing when backed into a corner. Remember when Scott Peterson was arrested he had all that equipment in his car like he was going to attempt to survive in the wilderness. As if.

Thanks Suzi. I really appreciate this. It came as a complete surprise
this morning and we definately did not pursue this.

Thanks to FLNY for jogging my memory that they did contact the drivers before they found Joran.

Unless they went to the police themselves, someone must have ratted them out quickly upon hearing a description of Joran I'm thinking, but would also like to know for sure.

Exactly. Illogical at is core in his case. Shows the major disconnect.
But in another sense, I really think Joran perceived Peru itself, maybe
all of So America, as a wide open wilderness compared to the
sophistication of Aruba and his family? It would be interesting to
discuss this with him.

This part intrigues me, because as we know the drivers wind up being charged!

The ironic part is (if he had money) he could have casually departed right out of Lima airport - for 2 days, to anywhere in the world without raising an eyebrow. No doubt his biggest mistake (if he had money).

I thought he said he went to the airport but saw deputies and was
affraid of being caught, so departed ... then the bus scenario, then
taxi(s). Him going to the airport then leaving in fear of aprehension
shows rational behavior -

Wasn't it reported that he went to the Jorge Chavez Airport in Lima but he saw a bunch of police and got spooked?

Heh... you beat me to it, jwarner. :)

Im going to back to review the driver scenario - it was all posted
in some detail here pages ago - I could be wrong but I thought one of
the drivers contacted authorities in Chile (that was how the contact was made?)
then winds up being arrested himself ??? I need to go back and fact check.

I think that the only place this was reported was in Joran's confession...but this time it seems likely that it's the truth!!

In the article I posted about the taxi drivers, one of them says Joran had a ticket to Cuzco, Peru but decided not to use it. Cuzco is about as far south of Lima as is Nazca, but more inland. In his confession, Joran says he picked up the first taxi to Nazca at the bus station in Lima. He must have bought a bus ticket to Cuzco there, then decided to take a taxi to Nazca instead .... which must have cost him more money.

MOO

Being new to this sleuthing world, I'm not so sure how creditable The Daily Beast is, but they just reported:

"Dutch investigative journalist Peter R. De Vries, caught him on hidden camera with a hotel room full of underage women. Van der Sloot can be heard offering them '$15,000 to shake your *advertiser censored*.' ... Now, revelations that two young Thai sex workers who appear on that video are missing have prompted Thai police to open an investigation. They have officially requested access to Van der Sloot in Peru."

and...

"[In 2009] he won $12,000 at the Asia Pacific Poker Tournament in Macau, where he reportedly assaulted a young woman after inviting her to his room following a night at a local casino. That young woman is filing an official complaint and cooperating with the Peruvian and Dutch authorities."

Just by chance, I wonder if he may have been headed to Uruguay? (EG) You know it really makes no sense why he went to Santiago? Wasn't it said he stayed in Vina Del Mar---where he left his "stuff". What was in doing in Santiago that day and if he was on his way to Argentina, like they thought, what in the world was he doing going back and forth in Chile??? He was going the wrong way.

Wonder if the access to him is his DNA profile? Which goes back to the other story we haven't been able to verify. NOW the girl is coming forward....a year later? That's hinky. Let's hope these stories link. ETA: This article answers my question of who really owned the coffee shop. He bought it with the money from the pimp for the girls. He was only 18/19.!!!
