Prince George all grown up: See what scientists predict he'll look like

"...Using software to combine the prince's current facial features and the features of his family members, they've predicted what he'll look like at age 7, 20, 40 and even 60 years old, by which time he might just be King George...

Here’s a map of all the mass shootings in 2015 :(

Hatred and Forgiveness in Charleston

"The compassion expressed by relatives of the victims in Charleston offers a stark contrast with Dylann Roof’s hateful manifesto..

The manifesto showcases a character markedly different from those the world saw on Friday, when several relatives of the nine people slain inside Charleston’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church appeared in court and addressed Roof. The family members of the dead told Roof, a professed white supremacist, of their pain and anguish. But they also said they would forgive him...."

Why Equating Mental Illness With Violence Harms Us All

"We too often forget that those struggling with mental illness are constantly forced to fight a battle on two fronts. Not only do they have to grapple with themselves  --  with their own thoughts and mind  --  but they also have to contend with the negative assumptions made about those with mental illness, which are pervasive in our society....

Violent crimes are committed by violent people. Plain and simple. Study after study has shown that there is no connection between those with mental illness and violence. Violence is not a characteristic of one particular demographic and, while it may be seductive to believe otherwise, these terrible episodes of mass violence cannot be predicted..."

Oklahoma prisons boss resigns amid execution investigation

"OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The head of Oklahoma's prison system, who presided over two botched lethal injections and a third that was called off because the wrong drug was delivered, announced his resignation Friday amid an investigation into what went wrong with the executions...

At Pruitt's request, the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has issued an indefinite stay of all scheduled executions.

The attorney general has said he won't request any execution dates until at least 150 days after his investigation is complete, the results are made public and his office receives notice that the prisons agency can comply with the state's execution protocol."

Death Sentence Reversed In Snowmobile Murder-For-Hire Case

"...The state Supreme Court on Monday overturned Santiago's death sentence and unanimously ordered a new penalty phase, saying the trial judge, Elliot Solomon, failed to disclose "significant and relevant" mitigating evidence for jury consideration when they decided to send Santiago to death row in 2005.

Santiago, 32, formerly of Torrington, was one of three men convicted in the murder-for-hire fatal shooting of Niwinski, 45, in West Hartford on Dec. 14, 2000. The other men, Mark Pascual and Matthew Tyrell, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to life in prison..."

Good news that Robert Patton is resigning (being forced out) in OK. His mishandling of executions there was awful and likely criminal.

Trapped with Ms. Arias

Section 8

Dealing With Ms. Arias

after April 4, 2011 Motion to Withdraw denied
=====================================================

Chapter 31

The Consequences of Being Ms. Arias' "Personal Lawyer"

there were 30-40 boxes of evidence

only had a part-time secretary, who didn't know capital cases now- who was now being paid by L

since he was not the murderer's "contract attorney", he now had to pay for her phone calls to him- if L was not available to accept calls, secretary would not answer

"...not accepting Ms. Arias' calls meant hanging up on her so that I wouldn't be charged for them. Even though I explained this to Ms. Arias, she did not like how I was running my business. She did not like being hung up on" (pg. 182)

she could still call other members of her team tho'- most calls from her had nothing to do with her case

the murderer would call and comment on what time L arrived/left work, she commented on how long vacations

"..she understood the need for vacations but that time I was away was too long"
====================================================================

Chapter 32

Jail Visits With Ms. Arias

L told Wilmott/MDLR that murderer's visits would usually last 2 hours long - (they didn't believe him)- the murderer craved and demanded attention

visits were at county jail- Estrella- Maricopa's only jail for women- not in a good part of town- old, musty, drab, lifeless building

- must remove everything from pockets to enter visiting rm- other inmates and their visitors there also

- L talks about heartbreaking scenes in room- women, children sometimes crying

the murderer 's "classification...we had to visit in a special room reserved for 'high security inmates'.." she had to be escorted by 1, 2,or 3 guards

L describes the visitation room

L heard the murderer's chains shackled to her ankles before he saw her- with her hands chained to a belt- one hand would be un-cuffed when she entered rm

the murderer would 1st complain about the guards that accompanied her to visits

visited her at least once week, but L was on on another case during this time and visited once/twice month- she wasn't happy about that- she would call to complain- constant phone calls- almost daily

visits lasted about 2 hours because the murderer trying to convince L to file/not file a certain motion; and/or talks about "her cat, what was happening in her pod, whatever the latest drama with her Mom happened to be, how she did not have enough money to order what she wanted on commissary..." (pg. 189)

L listened to her whining to build trust with client

L relates 1 discussion: her "sexual escapades" with TA- "for whatever reason (probably because she was a victim of sexual abuse as a child) Ms. Arias decided she wanted to inform me of the current state of her vaginal grooming. In doing this, she went too far......the ABA guidelines do not require you to listen to that kind of stuff"

L claims visits were manipulation "into acting in accordance with her wishes"

L relates another discussion about a motion: she tried to talk him out of filing motion, wanted it withdrawn- "I would not do it and Ms. Arias started to cry and ultimately pitched a fit. She put her head down on the table and cried loudly" she "droned on like a child who was not getting her way and she kept going while I just sat there" (pg. 191)

-L claims he could see how she manipulated her parents as child- tantrum until "her demands were met"

-when she wouldn't stop crying, he got up, she cried louder "it was her 'hail Mary'. it did not work, I left"- days later she called and "vigorously scolded" him

L claims that in last book, it will include letter to the murderer from him

This is purposefully cryptic:

A mutual friend of ours here, whose sister was murdered 27 years ago this month, was notified that the murderer was granted a hearing in AZ about getting off of Death Row. Can you believe it? What is with Arizona?

Exactly why this this was the best outcome for Arias. The DP is nothing but an advantage for convicts as it is. I think Arias knew that very well and I think if she had gotten it she stood a good chance of walking out of prison one day, and the stress on the family through years of endless and relentless appeals, turning her into the victim while forgetting the crime, watching the justice system they relied upon essentially turn against them due to moral confusion and uncertainty would have been orders of magnitude worse than their initial disappointment.

I hope K can bring her reason to bear on the current situation and those adjudicating it are open to reason.

YoNo, I must admit that I chuckle every time I read Laurence in your posts. Do you do that because he refers to CMJA as Ms. Arias? I can't see calling him Kirk either BTW, which is why I refer to him as Nurmi all the time. :D

The Alexander Family really wanted the DP for CMJA. The tortuous trials have left many scars, not only on them, but friends and trial watchers alike.

Our friend does not want another Penalty Phase should the judge grant the murderer's motion. If he is successful, it is my hope that LWOP is the only option.

What I find amazing is that Nurmi experienced much of what Travis experienced with CMJA with regards to manipulation, crying, repeated calling, etc and he seems to have a disconnect. One would think he would then understand what Travis went through and tailor his Defense of her with that in mind. But oh no.

His justifications of his own actions fall short IMO. I find his words petulant and whiney and they have failed thus far to change my opinion of him. I don't understand his rationale for going in the gutter every single time.

I realize that, but did they want additional millions of dollars of tax payer money put towards her appeals with an entire biased and militant faction of the legal system intent on getting her conviction overturned, an army of lawyers whose careers are built on fighting DP convictions with no regard for the brutality of crime and the effect of it and the endless appeals on the victim family?

For some reason, I don't think they thought that far ahead...
Perhaps more emotional than logical decisions. Rage against CMJA for what she did to their brother IMO superseded everything else. I personally understand that.

What!!?? Oh my  :hills: :hilarious:

Here's a reductionist and probably silly thought- maybe Nurmi is judgemental about Travis because he thinks T could have freed himself but didn't try hard enough to escape the killer's clutches , whereas Nurmi didn't have the option of escaping. And the only reason Nurmi can think of why T didn't cut her off was because of sex.

Morning all!

Yes, I agree with you there Hope4More ^^ But I really don't believe Travis "was" having sex with her SO many times as she said... Looking forward Juan's book!! I'll probably have to buy that one, as I don't see it coming up in my library... :(

So - I believe I'll be getting my Christmas tree today! :christmastree: :santahat: Hopefully, will NOT be paying an arm and leg for it! At the supermarket I go to they have Douglas Fir for $25; but I believe Home Depot has trees a lot cheaper, where I bought one last year! I like the White Spruce kind!

Since our street is rural, we have combined mail boxes on a long post. It fell over last week and the neighbor across the street fixed it up nice now. Instead of wood, he used pipes; so I decorated it for Christmas! Red tinsel with gold Christmas bulbs I swirled around the pipes! Got them at the Dollar store! I have to say- it looks nice! :D

I haven't been over to that thread Hatfield - I sort of knew it would get too political, religious, etc... and YES!! :happydance: this is a very nice and friendly thread to start my day!

Later!
:seeya:

I tend to agree with your thought. Where Nurmi falls short is understanding the psychological impact on a young man, in view of his background, who didn't possess the tools to deal with CMJA. IMO

With Nurmi and his viewpoint of Jodi was sexual abuse ,Travis was etc etc. You want to ask him who sexually abused you?

I'm kinda curious about how one would go about vaginal grooming under Sheriff Joe's watchful eye, not to mention what kind of instruments you might be able to muster up from the commissary list.

My advice to nurmi .......
