Morning!

The Day the Music Died. On this day in 1959, a small plane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper went down in Iowa. A tragic event. Were you alive when this happened? If so, do you remember where you were? Edited to add: I was only 12, so I don't remember...

Trial of Man Accused of Kidnapping Christina Morris Delayed, Family Continues to Look for Answers

"The man accused of kidnapping Christina Morris from a Plano, Texas shopping center may not stand trial until June of 2016.

Enrique Arochi, 24, has been in jail since last December on a charge of aggravated kidnapping in connection with Morris's summer 2014 disappearance. His trial was scheduled to begin on November 30th, but a judge has now pushed back that day in order to allow for new hair samples to be tested.

The hair samples came from a vacuum cleaner that Texas Department of Public Safety investigators obtained from a Sprint store where Arochi worked as a manager..."

Florida Supreme Court blocks scheduled execution

"The Florida Supreme Court on Tuesday granted a stay of execution to a death row inmate, adding new uncertainty to the future of capital punishment in the nation's third-largest state.

Without explanation, six justices issued a brief statement blocking the scheduled Feb. 11 execution of Michael Lambrix "pending further order of this court." The justices denied a motion by Lambrix's attorney to move the case back to the trial court for a full evidentiary hearing.

Lambrix has spent more than half his life on death row for the murders of two people in Glades County more than three decades ago. But the state's highest court agreed to review his case because of the possible impact of a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 12 that struck down Florida's death penalty sentencing law as unconstitutional. In an 8-1 decision, the nation's highest court said Florida's sentencing system violates a defendant's right to a trial by jury because the jury's role is advisory and the trial judge makes the key fact-finding decisions..."

SAN BERNARDINO: McStay quadruple homicide defendant to represent himself

"The issue of who represents Charles "Chase" Merritt, charged in the quadruple homicide case of the McStay family, has come full circle, with Merritt again deciding on Tuesday, Feb. 2, that he wants to represent himself in trial instead of having a judge appoint new legal counsel.

Merritt, 58, elected to represent himself during a hearing this morning before Judge Michael A. Smith in San Bernardino County Superior Court, according to a court news release. The judge in a hearing Jan. 26 gave Merritt more time to mull over what to do after the defendant dismissed his previous county-paid four-member legal defense team.

About a year ago, Merritt switched from private counsel to represent himself, with an advisory attorney, and later switched to a court-appointed legal team. More than a year ago, he expressed his wish for a speedy trial because he has a congestive heart failure condition and, expressing his innocence, wanted to get on with life. Merritt will be back in court Feb. 11 for a hearing to determine if he is ready to go to trial..."

U.S. exonerations hit record high as more troubled cases probed

"Criminal exonerations hit a record high in 2015 due largely to district attorneys in places such as Houston, Dallas and Brooklyn, New York, setting up units to review cases where the legal system may have acted unjustly, a report released on Wednesday found.

There were 149 known exonerations in 2015, where the exonerated defendants served on average more than 14 years in prison, said the report from the National Registry of Exonerations. That topped the previous recorded high of 139 in 2014.

The issue has gained attention because of the hit Netflix documentary series "Making a Murderer," which suggests authorities planted evidence against two Wisconsin men convicted of murder, an allegation rejected by local law enforcement.

"There is a coming to terms that this is a regular problem, not just something that happens once in a while and unpredictably," said Samuel Gross, a law professor at the University of Michigan and editor of the registry.

"But progress so far is a drop in the bucket."..."

Daughters of notorious serial killers discuss their experiences on television

"...Ms Moore’s father is Keith Jesperson – who was dubbed the ‘Happy Face Killer' due to notes he would write to police officers and the media, signing off with a smiley face.
Jesperson is known to have raped and murdered eight women over a five year period in the early 1990s in various states in the US.

The 36-year-old found out about her father’s crimes when she was 15, after he had been arrested. She previously spoke about her father’s past with Oprah Winfrey, as well as writing for the BBC about her experiences in 2014, recalling seeing her father torture and kill small animals when she was younger....

Ms Carson is the daughter of Michael Carson who, along with his wife Suzan, brutally murdered three people they allegedly believed to be witches in San Francisco during the 1980s.

Ms Carson found out about her father’s crime when she was eight-years-old and instantly begun having nightmares as well as feeling “so alone”. :(

She reportedly also said she felt guilty about being related to a serial killer and “instantly thought this world is a very scary place.”..."

Nine police forces examining 'confessions' of serial killer Levi Bellfield
"...Senior detectives hope to know within weeks whether the “confessions” made by 47-year-old Bellfield last year from his cell in Wakefield prison have any truth to them. In a national operation being run by the Metropolitan police, detectives are treating the claims of a man who has lied repeatedly in the past, and is thought to be one of Britain’s most prolific serial sexual killers, with some caution.

Despite repeated denials, Bellfield confessed in interviews with detectives last summer that he had abducted, raped and murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler as she walked home from school in Walton-on-Thames in 2002. His outpouring – after so many years of silence and denials – sparked the nationally coordinated police operation which has been examining and testing his claims..."

Some federal appeals court judges fear lethal injection drug danger

"Just hours before Brandon Astor Jones’ scheduled execution, several judges on the federal appeals court in Atlanta warned of dire consequences if the state continues to shroud the lethal injection process in secrecy — never revealing who made the pentobarbital or the qualifications of that pharmacist.

“Today Brandon Jones will be executed, possibly in violation of the Constitution,” 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Robin Rosenbaum wrote in one of four dissenting opinions. “He may also be cruelly and unusually punished in the process. But if he is, we will not know until it’s too late — if ever.”

Three other judges on the appeals court agreed.

The debate over the Georgia law that conceals the identities of the pharmacists who produce lethal injection drugs is ongoing in other states as well. Repeatedly, courts nationwide have supported laws created to shield lethal injection drug makers from public pressure and ensure a supply of drugs for executions.

But some courts seem to be wavering...."

They have waited 36 years for justice

"...“I am not happy about that day, but I feel like justice is being served,” said Katie Tackett King, who was 7 when her father was murdered and has gone on to become a lawyer.

“It’s been a long time coming,” she told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I feel the weight of another person’s life being taken. And I don’t feel happy about that. But I also feel the heaviness of living a whole life without my father by my side. And he (Jones) robbed us of that in a very, very vicious way.”...

“I knew he had been shot, but I did not know how,” King said. “And I did not know how many times (he was shot). I did not know he had been tortured. … They had taken turns shooting him prior to shooting him execution style,” King said.

During the trials, Bixon left the courtroom when there was testimony about her husband’s injuries. So she only learned he had been pistol whipped 10 days ago when her daughter brought it up in a conversation.

Still, the mother and daughter say they don’t hate Jones.

“I think forgiveness is one of the most important … human characteristics that we have to let us move forward in our lives in a positive way,” King said.

“When I say I forgive him, it does not mean I condone what he did. What he did is a horrible thing and I believe it deserves a just punishment, even though it’s taken an incredibly long time to go through the criminal justice system.”

“I know he’s an older man,” she continued. “But it’s not my fault it’s taken 36 years for this whole thing to run its course through this very slow system that we have. I wish it wasn’t the case.”..."

Brandon Astor Jones waits while lawyers try to stop execution

"Brandon Astor Jones, the oldest man on Georgia’s death row, continued to wait in a holding cell a few steps from the state’s execution chamber as the appointed time of his death, 7 p.m, passed.

There were a flurry of court filings in the final hours today as his attorneys rushed to stop his execution for the 1979 murder of Roger Tackett, who managed a Tenneco convenience store and gas station in Cobb County.

Earlier on Tuesday, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta turned down Jones’ request for a stay so his lawyers could argue before all 11 federal appeals court judges, sitting as a group, the constitutionality of the Georgia law that keeps secret the identity of the pharmacist who makes the pentobarbital for executions..."

The Latest: Inmate in Last-Minute Appeals to Stop Execution

"The Latest on the execution of Georgia's oldest death row inmate, who's set to be put to death Tuesday (all times local):

8:20 p.m.
Lawyers for Brandon Astor Jones have made last-minute appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court asking to halt Jones' scheduled Tuesday evening execution for the 1979 killing of a store manager.

In defense filings to the court, the lawyers asked the justices to block Jones' execution for either of two reasons: he is challenging Georgia's lethal injection secrecy law and also because he says his death sentence is disproportionate to his crime. There was no immediate response from the court in Washington more than an hour after Jones' scheduled 7 p.m. execution time had passed. At 72, Jones is the oldest inmate on Georgia's death row..."

Too Long on Death Row to Die

"In 1979, Jimmy Carter was President. Pink Floyd released their bestselling album "The Wall." Denim overalls were in, Mork and Mindy was on TV, and news about the Iranian hostage crisis dominated every headline.

Some of you reading this weren't even alive in 1979.

But in 1979, another, perhaps less well-known event, took place. Roger Tackett, a teacher, moonlighting as a convenience store attendant in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, was shot and killed. Brandon Astor Jones and his co-defendant Van Roosevelt Solomon were sentenced to death for the crime. Solomon was executed in 1985, but Jones has remained on death row for all this time.

That's 38 years of waiting to be executed.

The State of Georgia just set a February 2, 2016 execution date for Jones.

A 2016 execution date for a murder that happened in 1979.

I mean, what's the point? None of the reasons we punish hold true here...

Jones is now 72, and not in great health. He is a writer and a blogger who documents his experiences on death row. In other words, Jones may still have something to teach us; something perhaps that he can contribute to society were he permitted to serve out the rest of his life behind bars..."

But what about the victim's family? Shouldn't the family and loved ones decide what is right for them? They have waited 38 (?)years for their loved one's justice (if that's what they want and that is what they want).
Maybe the appeals system should be changed so it is shorter?
Too old to kill again? I don't believe that.

Georgia inmate in late appeals seeking to block execution
Feb. 2, 2016 8:38 PM EST

"JACKSON, Ga. (AP) — Lawyers for Georgia's oldest death row inmate filed last-minute appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court urging the justices to block the scheduled Tuesday evening execution of the 72-year-old man, who was convicted of the 1979 killing of a convenience store manager.

Brandon Astor Jones was originally scheduled to receive an injection of the barbiturate pentobarbital at 7 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson. He was convicted in the shooting of a suburban Atlanta convenience store manager, Roger Tackett.

In late Tuesday filings to the court, the lawyers asked the justices to block Jones' planned execution for either of two reasons: he is challenging Georgia's lethal injection secrecy law and also because he says his death sentence is disproportionate to his crime.

There was no immediate response from the court in Washington more than 1 and ½ hours after Jones' scheduled execution time had passed..."

Georgia's oldest Death Row inmate, 72, eats a last meal of chicken, rice and turnips before being executed by lethal injection after the Supreme Court denies a last minute appeal

"...He received the lethal injection at 12.46am on Wednesday at the state prison in Jackson.

The last person he saw before dying was the man who prosecuted him in 1979 - former Cobb County District Attorney Tom Charron - who was sitting on the front row...

Three friends and 11 family members visited Jones just before his death, as did his lawyer and an investigator.

The inmate, who has spent almost four decades on death row, had declined a last meal request.

Instead he ate the standard prison menu of chicken and rice, rutabagas, seasoned turnip greens, dry white beans, cornbread with a dessert of bread pudding and fruit punch, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections...

The injection is not visible to observers, but the warden left the execution chamber at 12:30 am and records from past executions show the lethal drug generally starts to flow within a minute or two of the warden's departure.

Jones was initially still with his eyes closed and then swallowed a couple of times and moved his head slightly.

He opened his eyes at 12:36 am and turned his head to his left, appearing to look toward a clock hanging on the wall.

He then turned to stare at the man who prosecuted him in 1979 - former Cobb County District Attorney Tom Charron - who was sitting on the front row.

He then closed his eyes again and took a few deep breaths before falling still.

After he died, about 15 of his supporters and death-penalty opponents, who were gathered about a mile from the execution building, held hands and prayed...

Jones was the 38th inmate put to death by lethal injection. There are currently 75 men on death row in Georgia."

Delaware's Death Penalty Put On Hold

Jurden's order comes weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Hurst v. Florida that allowing judges instead of juries to impose death sentences violates the Sixth Amendment. Delaware and Alabama both have death sentencing schemes similar to Florida.

Robert Dunham, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, said the state was better off halting its death penalty until the state Supreme Court weighs the constitutional issues raised by Hurst.

AFTER PUTTING BOOKSELLERS OUT OF BUSINESS, AMAZON IS SET TO OPEN ITS OWN RETAIL CHAIN.

"...Amazon actually debuted its first bookstore last November, in the company's hometown of Seattle. Amazon Books, as it was dubbed, was touted as a "physical extension" of the e-commerce site; the store usually carries around 5,000 book titles and also sells Amazon devices.

"We’ve applied 20 years of online bookselling experience to build a store that integrates the benefits of offline and online book shopping," Amazon Books VP Jennifer Cast said at the time. "The books in our store are selected based on Amazon.com customer ratings, pre-orders, sales, popularity on Goodreads, and our curators’ assessments. These are fantastic books! Most have been rated four stars or above, and many are award winners."

What it’s like to live with microcephaly, the birth defect linked to Zika ’emergency’

"...People born with the neurological condition exist on a spectrum. On one end are those for whom the characteristic unusually small head is largely a superficial concern.

Then there are people, such as Caceres, who suffer some health problems but are otherwise able to live regular lives. About 15 percent of people with microcephaly have no intellectual disabilities associated with it.

But these types of cases are the minority in the current outbreak. Officials in Brazil and other countries hit by the Zika virus say that the cases of microcephaly they’re seeing are on the other, more-severe end of the spectrum: cases of infants who are likely to live with profound intellectual disabilities, serious speech and motor problems, and other health complications that require constant care. In Brazil, there have been at least a dozen confirmed deaths of babies born with the condition.

It’s still not completely certain that Zika virus is responsible for these cases — in declaring a global public health emergency Monday, the World Health Organization said that a link is still only “strongly suspected.” It’s also not clear how the virus can disrupt the development of the head and brain during pregnancy, though a 2014 study of another virus tied to microcephaly found that it worked by attacking stem cells during early brain development.

But the burden of microcephaly on mothers and children meant that the WHO couldn’t afford to wait, Director-General Margaret Chan said. The consequences would be too costly..."

Reducing Preventable Harm in Hospitals

"First of two articles.

Each year, in the United States, millions of patients are harmed while receiving care in hospitals. They get infections, experience adverse reactions to drugs, develop dangerous bed sores, or come down with pneumonia from the very ventilators meant to help them breathe.

The estimates of the number of people who die each year as a result of hospital errors have ranged from as many as 98,000 in a landmark Institute of Medicine report from 1999 to as many as 440,000 in a 2013 study.

It’s believed that most of these deaths could be prevented if health care providers always adhered to evidence-informed practices. In recent years, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, an arm of the Department of Health and Human Services, has sought to drive improvements by linking payments to hospital performance, including patient safety.

But hospital care is astonishingly complex. In the United States each year, there are over 35 million hospital admissions and 136 million visits to emergency rooms. Doctors, nurses and technicians conduct so many procedures and dispense so much medication that even seemingly tiny error rates can translate to tens of thousands of patients harmed..."

After 82 years, woman meets daughter she had to give up (with clip)

"(CNN)Some adopted children spend years looking for their birth parents.

It took Betty Morrell decades -- five, to be exact. But she was recently reunited with the woman who gave birth to her 82 years ago, according to CNN affiliate WBNG.

The mother and daughter met for the first time in more than eight decades last month in the lobby of the Greater Binghamton Airport in Binghamton, New York.

"It seems like it's unbelievable," Morrell's birth mother, Lena Pierce, told WBNG.

Pierce was forced to give up her 6-month-old in 1933 after state officials concluded she was too young to raise the child, according to another of Pierce's daughters, Millie Hawk.

She was 14 at the time...

"I'm not alone anymore," Morrell told WBNG. "I have my mother, and I have sisters and brothers. It's surreal but so wonderful to be together again after all this time.".."

Windows 10 Automatic Upgrades Hit Windows 7 And Windows 8

"Happy using Windows 7 or Windows 8? You might not be happy much longer, because Microsoft has announced Windows 10 will now start installing automatically on Windows 7 and Windows 8 PCs…

The development sees Microsoft follow through on its controversial October roadmap which said Windows 10 would have its status changed in 2016 to become a ‘Recommended’ upgrade in Windows Update. In basic terms this means anyone who uses Windows 7 or Windows 8 with default Windows Update settings (the vast majority) will now see Windows 10 begin installing by itself.

The good news is Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will still have the power to interrupt the installation once it has started, but this still represents by far the most aggressive measure Microsoft has taken to achieve its stated goal of one billion Windows 10 installations by 2017...

Yes, you can interrupt the Windows 10 installation when it starts automatically on your computer but the smarter moves are a) to change your Windows Update security settings (guide here), and b) to install the GWX Control Panel – a respected third party tool which is effective in stopping the continual nagging of Microsoft’s Windows 10 upgrade prompts.

Ultimately it all comes down to respecting user choice. Microsoft is screaming ‘Free Puppy! Free Puppy! TAKE this Free Puppy!’ and this makes it feel entitled to force it upon you, but puppies grow quickly and Microsoft knows very well that it is supplying one which has plenty of teeth…"

10 unanswered questions we still have about the OJ Simpson trial

"To prepare for tomorrow’s (Feb. 3) American Crime Story premiere (on FX at 10pm), we’ve been reviewing the infamous OJ Simpson trial. Season 1’s ten episodes will revolve around this historical event, highlighting the birth of the 24/7 news era, criminal justice, race, and police bias. Since these are some pretty hefty topics, we definitely want to come prepared.

This case has been dubbed the “Trial of the Century” for a reason – because there are many twists and turns that left the world’s 95-150 million viewers in awe. While refreshing our memories about the eight-month trial that followed Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman’s murders, we came across several details that left us puzzled. We’re curious to see see if American Crime Story addresses these questions during its run:.."

Thanks MolllyandMe.

My main problems with my stomach was many years ago where it would buckle me over for all day at a time. I don't get the kind of pain I used to get but I still do occasionally feel similar pains on a much smaller scale which Gaviscon antacid usually knocks out so I had always thought it was just real bad acidity levels out of control but I never really knew for sure because I don't remember any doctor ever diagnosis a real reason for them happening other than the sores on my stomach that developed from too much acidity levels.

I will definitely bring up the possibly of H pylori with my family doc the next time I see him because I don't recall ever being tested for that. Not sure if they commonly checked for that in the 80's is about when I was getting the pains real bad and had the scopes done back in the 80s.

I hope you get to feeling better too and hope your doc can figure out your issues as well. I know all too well what its like to have a health problem that the docs just cant figure out whats wrong. It is frustrating to say the least. The trial and error they go through makes us feel like a guinea pig sometimes and then I would tend to give up for months at a time until pain got so bad I would come crawling back to the next different doctor. When having a tough problem the trick is to stumble into the right doctor's office that can really help and really find out whats wrong.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. We have a wealth of experience here in dealing with things and its great to be able to bounce things off everyone here.

Morgan Freeman visits Illinois serial killer Brian Dugan for documentary

Dugan readily admitted he is a psychopath. He acknowledged that he remains a danger to society, because of a "very strong rage," and is not rehabilitated. Yet, Dugan said, through aging and his own efforts at self-improvement, "I can remember my old self, but it's like a different person now."

He continued, "I've changed to a point, but I'm still dangerous. ... He still lives in me."

Dugan said his crimes were motivated by sexual compulsion, self-preservation and an emotional "numbness." He attributed that feeling to his drug and alcohol use, an abusive upbringing and his psychopathic nature.

"I was driven by some kind of an impulse that kept growing," he said. "It was like being a hamster on a little wheel."...

"I know I'm a psychopath. I know I'm impulsive. I know I don't have much empathy. I know I used to be glib. I've improved myself on each point. I still have impulses, but they're controlled now."...

The documentary series is set to air on the National Geographic Channel in the middle of next year (2016)."

I have a theory about the relationship between violent crimes and testosterone levels, wherein young men are prone to such activities. Older men, even if they had violent pasts, outgrow it. Kinda wish those young, violent types could be put on a pill.

JMO

ETA

I also wonder about how many young men today use steroids, which seem readily available to most people these days...

Interesting theory GigiG and very interesting topic to me. You may be correct.

I did some research on testosterone and criminal behavior this afternoon and here is what I found:

Testosterone and Aggressive Behavior in Man

"Abstract

Atavistic residues of aggressive behavior prevailing in animal life, determined by testosterone, remain attenuated in man and suppressed through familial and social inhibitions. However, it still manifests itself in various intensities and forms from; thoughts, anger, verbal aggressiveness, competition, dominance behavior, to physical violence. Testosterone plays a significant role in the arousal of these behavioral manifestations in the brain centers involved in aggression and on the development of the muscular system that enables their realization. There is evidence that testosterone levels are higher in individuals with aggressive behavior, such as prisoners who have committed violent crimes...

The first study in prisoners was conducted in 1972, soon after the feasibility of testosterone estimation, by Kreutz and Rosel, who found that prisoners who had committed violent crimes during their adolescence had higher testosterone levels (13). In a single sample measurement of free testosterone in the saliva of 89 prison inmates, it was found that at the extremes of the testosterone distribution, the relationship between testosterone to aggression was more striking (14). Ten out of 11 inmates with the highest testosterone concentrations had committed violent crimes, whereas 9 out of 11 who had committed non-violent crimes had the lowest testosterone levels. Similar data were reported by others (4, 15, 16), but these results should be seen with caution because of methodological limitations (small number of subjects and samples), but mainly because of the unnatural conditions of life in prison. Studies in sexual offenders independent of their brutality gave diverging results...

An investigation of testosterone, cortisol and thyroxin in a sample of 4179 veterans, which has increased credibility because of its size, has shown that basal testosterone levels were positively related to antisocial and aggressive behavior (19). It is of interest, however, that supraphysiological doses of testosterone in the order of 200 mg weekly (20), or even 600 mg weekly (21), which were administered to normal men had no effect on their aggression or anger levels...

4. Conclusions

...There is evidence that testosterone levels are higher in individuals with aggressive behavior, such as prisoners who have committed violent crimes..

Most of the studies, however, were conducted by self reported questionnaires, the accuracy of which is questionable..."

Strange but True: Testosterone Alone Does Not Cause Violence
Hormones don't necessarily make men violent, but they do cause them to seek social dominance

"It's commonly assumed that testosterone, that stereotypically male hormone, is intimately tied to violence. The evidence is all around us: weight lifters who overdose on anabolic steroids experience "roid rage," and castration—the removal of the source of testosterone—has been a staple of animal husbandry for centuries.

But what is the nature of that relationship? If you give a normal man a shot of testosterone, will he turn into the Incredible Hulk? And do violent men have higher levels of testosterone than their more docile peers?

"[Historically,] researchers expected an increase in testosterone levels to inevitably lead to more aggression, and this didn't reliably occur," says Frank McAndrew, a professor of psychology at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. Indeed, the latest research about testosterone and aggression indicates that there's only a weak connection between the two. And when aggression is more narrowly defined as simple physical violence, the connection all but disappears....

... a growing body of evidence suggests that testosterone is as much the result of violence as its cause..."

AGGRESSION AND VIOLENCE

And this article about agression in women:

Testosterone Linked To Violence In Female Inmates

"Higher testosterone levels are related to criminal violence and aggressive dominance among women in prison, says a Georgia State University study..

The study, published in the September-October issue of Psychosomatic Medicine, measured testosterone in 87 female inmates at a maximum security prison. Their criminal behavior was scored from court records, and their prison behavior was assessed from prison records and staff interviews.

Testosterone was found related both to the violence of the women's crimes and to the aggressive dominance of their behavior in prison. This finding was further supported by assessing how an inmate's age corresponded to her behavior and testosterone levels.

As the amount of the hormone measured decreased in older prisoners -- testosterone declines with age -- so did the aggressive dominance. But the study concluded that testosterone, not age alone, was the significant factor; older inmates who had high hormone levels were not less aggressive or dominant...

The study's findings indicate testosterone plays an important role in the female criminal population, but variables such as age, social factors, and other hormones must also be considered, says Dabbs..."

And aging/crime:

The Age and Crime Relationship

(see page 380, 2nd paragraph- couldn't copy/paste because this is not an article, but a chapter in a book)

Even tho' their testosterone may drop in old age, criminals just have a different way of looking at the world- maybe- "nature vs nuture", IMO ????

Thanks for posting your reply to the article I posted as the research made for a pleasant afternoon for me.

Reminds me of a time when I was trying to help someone at their store with their main store PC they used for cash registers. I was trying to help them swap out something on their motherboard. Everything went fine except I somehow had unplugged a pin on the motherboard and I brought all their cash registers down in the whole store. LOL

Luckily I spotted the pin got unplugged and plugged it back in and everything began working.

I was sweating bullets there for a few minutes as all the cashiers began yelling. LOL

Funny story Mr. Hatfield :giggle:

Did anyone watch this and was it worth watching? Any details you can share if someone watched this?

I watched it last night (actually, I watched it 2 1/2X- couldn't stay awake any longer to watch the ending the 3rdX- wayyy past my bedtime ).
I thought it was very well done for a TV ministries.
The 1st episode was about 1 1/2 hrs long, but I wanted more! I can't wait for next Tuesday for the next episode.
Even tho' I (we) know the whole horrible story, I learned a new thing- OJ threatened to kill himself in a Kardasian home (can't remember whose at this time) where he was hiding (just before the Bronco chase).
I remember watching the trial for 8 months and was very disappointed with the verdict. Eventually, I was sick and tired with the whole affair, but now I'm hoping to learn something else about it????

Here is more:

Jeffrey Toobin on Watching His Book, The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, Come To Television

"...Even for people who were obsessed with the trial, there are so many new details and insights in the TV show. That is going to be surprising to most people — except to you, because you outlined them all in your book. Did you ever imagine this would make for good dramatic television?

One of the reasons why I think no one ever did a movie or TV version previously is because there were two misconceptions: that people were sick of it, and everybody knew the story already. I always knew that both of those were wrong. It took [executive producers Brad Simpson, Nina Jacobson, and Ryan Murphy] to figure that out. The reaction we've had is indicative of the fact that the story has an incredible, enduring fascination. I always thought this was the most sensational event in American history never to have been brought to the screen. I knew that couldn't last forever. It's too wild a story...."

How the O.J. Simpson Case Explains Reality in 2016

"I told you so.

On June 17, 1994, a Ford Bronco driven by a retired N.F.L. player named Al Cowlings took to the freeway pursued by a posse of black-and-whites, a car chase conducted at a doop-de-doop pace and lasting over two hours, yet never less than utterly riveting. It was the precise moment that real got realer, or rather, that real got reality, because it was the precise moment that the pilot episode of the first—and best—reality-TV show of all time aired: the O.J. Simpson case. I wrote about this phenomenon in the June 2014 (the chase’s 20th-anniversary month) issue of Vanity Fair.

I’m going to write about it some more, though, since the man widely believed to have gotten away with double murder is once again ready for his close-up..."

How O. J. Simpson Killed Popular Culture

"Two decades after America dropped whatever it was doing to watch a white Bronco cruise down the San Diego Freeway, the O. J. Book Review:

THE RUN OF HIS LIFE
The People v. O. J. Simpson.
By Jeffrey Toobin.

"...In ''The Run of His Life,'' Jeffrey Toobin deftly recounts the alternative realities of the Simpson case, explaining the personalities and trial strategies behind them. Mr. Toobin, a journalist and former prosecutor who covered the case for The New Yorker, combines a talent for storytelling with an understanding of the trial process and the character disorders of high-profile attorneys. For readers still interested in the Simpson trial, ''The Run of His Life'' offers a comprehensive, professional account, unburdened by the self-justifications of parties to the case or the banalities of ghostwriters..."

Here is an interesting article on "the shoes":

The Real Story Behind the Infamous O.J. Simpson Shoes

"...In the early 90’s, Bloomingdale’s did not have a barcode scanning software system in place that would unequivocally prove what pair of shoes Simpson bought that day. So while Poser recalled that he had shown Simpson a size 12 Bruno Magli Lorenzo boot — the same size and style that left prints at the crime scene — he could not say for sure whether Simpson ultimately bought that pair.

“Eventually, after the [criminal] trial was over, they found the photograph of O.J. wearing the Bruno Magli shoe at a Bills game,” Poser said. “In the civil case, which I was deposed for, they stipulated that he was indeed wearing those shoes. Had they found that photograph prior to the criminal trial, that could have been a game-changer.”..."

Marcia Clark on What Episode One of The People v. O.J. Simpson Got Right and Wrong

"... You know, I picked [Bill Hodgman], Bill didn't pick me. The minute I got the case, I ran to Bill and said, “Please do this with me. Please be my partner.” I begged him. I begged him. And he had to go home and talk to his wife and think about it...

...then they blew one of the greatest lines in the show. Detective Ron Phillips, wonderful guy, he was the one who called to notify Simpson in Chicago. What he actually told Simpson was, “Your wife is dead.” And Simpson's response was, “Who killed her?” Wait a minute, how about a car accident? How about an overdose? [Ed. note: In the FX series, Detective Tom Lange calls Simpson at his Chicago hotel and says, “I have some bad news. Your ex-wife Nicole Simpson has been killed,” and later notes to his partner that Simpson didn’t ask how she died.]...

Does it bother you that the creators are taking some dramatic licenses? They do present the facts, too, but they admit there are some fictional embellishments.
I just hope people realize this is a dramatization. It couldn't be a documentary. You couldn't do a documentary without talking to the people involved. They have a larger message here, it sounds like. And that's good. If this provokes important discussions about race and the impact it has on the criminal-justice system and the reasons why the black and white perspectives are so very different, then that's a very good thing."

Why Cuba Gooding Jr. Thinks O.J. Simpson May Have CTE (video)

http://live.huffingtonpost.com/r/hi...avityRR&cps=gravity_5053_-2922113780262758011

(Mr. Gooding's voice sounds very scrachy in this video. I thought his voice in the movie was unnatural and just for the movie [although I don't remember OJ's voice being scratchy], but I guess, it's not)

Take a chance and watch it; who knows, you may like it :dunno:

Guess I'm talking to myself tonight

YoNo, thanks for all the info on the Simpson series. I haven't watched yet, but am taping the entire series. I didn't know there will be 10 episodes! I am glad to know there will be new info presented.

Gathering info for taxes this week, hope to get them done soon. Still waiting on one form to arrive in the mail, though.
