I went back over the first few days of the search. I have a motto, after following so many cases. We can't just go by what we are told, but we have to carefully watch LE behavior and read between the lines. Sooooo . . .


Tuesday Sept 16th
-LE is also searching near UVA hospital (Wha?!!!! Yep, that's right.)
-The report of the Fairfax/MH suspect sighting is released along with the sketch. (To me, this is clearly a sign that LE had already identified JM. There was no sighting. They just wanted to get the sketch out there because they already knew who and what they were dealing with.)


By Tuesday the 16th they put the Fairfax sketch back into circulation and they went sniffing around his place of employment.

On Wednesday the 17th LE searched Anchorage Farm and released the videos that clearly show JM close up, circling around to drop in behind Hannah, and then walking right along side of her.

On Thursday the 18th, LE put the public in a holding pattern. . .and waited and watched for JM to make a move.

You're research struck a chord with me because I noticed that LE seemed to have homed in on JM right away too. I agree with you on reading between the lines. I am trying to figure out a few things though that LE has left us hanging on and hopefully you have some input.

I wondered where it is confirmed that police searched Anchorage Farm in relation to HG? I first noticed that on the 17th LE asked:

That pretty much clinched it in my mind that they had linked HG to the MH case. However, at that time, they did not have Matthew's DNA swab. How did they narrow down to him so quickly then and connect him to Fairfax and MH? That is a huge leap to make based on race and a background check, IMO. Is this how WG was cleared? Not trying to make this a racial thing, but based on the no DNA sample... even with video footage and witnesses seeing him with HG that is a huge pointing finger. At that point, they had absolutely nothing to haul him in on. Did they happen to get him to voluntarily give DNA sample somehow prior to fleeing? Yikes.

Also, D. Bass, the owner of Anchorage Farms was shown the FBI sketch when it was released but could not link it to anyone. He has not been mentioned in the media at all since the JM link to MH and Fairfax. I wonder if he still does not recall seeing anyone who looks like JM near or on his property? A positive ID from him would be huge!

Regarding the bolded sentence: that would be as easy as could be, if the Tempo cash register was four minutes fast, and there would be nothing surprising about that. And, the same thing goes for any attempts to reconcile timings. Unless you have cameras or phones that are syncing themselves with the official USA time, you have the possibility of minor, or even major, discrepancies.

Some bars that I have been to purposely set the clocks ahead a few minutes . It helps to get customers safely OUT before the legal closing time. Last Call for Alcohol usually generates a flurry of last minute drink orders.
"Running a Tab".... I used to frequent a few bars where I had a "Tab", I could generally drink for a week or two with my total number of Blitz -Weinhard beers casually jotted down on a piece of paper by the bartender. Those days are gone............ Nowadays you would just hand your credit card to the server , and settle up at the end of the evening. SO... it is hard to know if the drinks charged at 1:10 ish , were fresh or closing the tab.
I do believe that Hannah was INSIDE Tempo , at LEAST to use the restroom. I refuse to believe that there was ANOTHER WOMAN wearing the same crop top that night at Tempo . Not likely

I'm not sure where JM was parked, but I believe somewhere near the parking garage near 4th and Water. I don't really see JM as someone who would pay to park his beat up car in a parking garage if he could find free street parking. I also believe some locals have reported that you can't get your car out after 1am. I don't know if that's true though.

The time stamp on the Tuel's video is 1:08am.

JM reportedly was buying drinks in Tempo at 1:10am-ish.

I'm not sure if I believe that last text was really sent at 1:20am. We've seen it reported as 1:40am, 1:20am and 1:06am. I'm more inclined to believe it was 1:06am, which means Hannah didn't have her phone at that time.

Monday Sept. 15th
-Hannah's phone records and computer are being searched
-LE is searching the 14th and Wertland area
-Hannah is reportedly last seen at 12:15 at a party
-the hallway pics of Hannah are released

Tuesday Sept 16th
-LE puts search on hold because of new leads via tips
-LE reports they have video
-Search is moved to Grady and eastward
-LE gets tip of Hannah being at the DM

-Anchorage farm is searched (Did you hear THAT? They are not trying to ID JM, they are already searching Anchorage Farm!)
-Parker Slaybough reports "breaking news" that LE has video of Hannah walking into a pub at 1 am.
-Presser. . .parents fear "foul play" and LE releases McGrady video.

-LE has reportedly located WG. Says Hannah was walking with black man
-LE releases Sal's video
-LE releases Tuel's video
-LE says there is no woman and it is Hannah's reflection in the Tuel's video (which WS posters were madly posting at the time that that clearly wasn't true. Sleuthers were all over the man with dreads. )

Thursday Sept 18th

-Reported that police will release more video
-Reported that police won't release more video
-Reported that police are pulling more video, but we will have to wait. . .
-And wait
-several reports that the POI is NOT on any of the videos
-reports that the man with dreads is not a POI and has been cleared
-LE says they want to talk to second male, but give no description
-At 4 pm LE gives description of POI black male, who is not on any videos. . .shaved head. . .etc
-$50,000 reward is announced
-reports that a sketch of POI is coming soon
-Vigil held for Hannah


Friday Sept 19th

-reportedly sometime after midnight a search warrant is executed on Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr's car.
-search warrant for apartment and phone executed shortly after search of car.

Anywhoo. . .that's where I kind of stopped. I think in hindsight it's quite clear how far along LE was in their investigation, what their media strategy was and the motivation behind what they released when.

Sooo. . .MOO. . .LE didn't need the public's help IDing JM. They were already way beyond that when the released the DM videos and all the silly "POI is NOT on any videos. . .It's a woman. No wait, it's Hannah's reflection" nonsense. So why release those videos at all? There were much better pictures of Hannah, so it didn't have anything to do with recognizing her. I think the only explanation was because JM was already under surveillance and they wanted to stress him. They wanted to lead JM to believe that they weren't on to him YET, but they were getting there. LE was hoping if they rattled him, he would lead them to Hannah.

I think LE may have spoken to a witness who saw JM with HG and identified him by name or at least knew what JM drove & was able to describe his car. JM is not someone who blends into the crowd and HG's height and outfit was eye catching. I think there are more witnesses than we know about.

Very impressed by how quickly (and cleverly) Longo and his team were able to home in on the suspect, and make him squirm. Just wish they'd caught him at the site so they could have found her sooner. Still can't believe he was actually able to make a getaway, but... maybe that was strategy, too? His fugitive status is why he is ineligible for bail....

I really have no basis for this, other then just a hunch...but I think JM was on their radar before HG went missing.

And looking at the timeline (thanks so much hambrig!), I'm wondering if Longo has long suspected JM in the death of MH...just didn't have anything to bring him in on, so no way to compare the DNA.

I also wonder, if given the time line...either phone records or HG friends where able to direct LE to whom she was likely last with...and when Longo heard the name it sent up an enormous red flag.

Hmmm. She could have had her phone if it was sent at 1:06....if she was just trying to buy herself some time from her friends but didn't want to tell them where she was, perhaps she could have sent that text from the DM just before meeting up with JM. Just a thought.

I don't think the MSM reports were 'bogus' so much as it is a matter of partial information sometimes got out and as the case evolved through further investigation, 'facts' changed. In this age of instant news, when everyone wants to know NOW, MSM is in constant competition to be first to get stories out, and sometimes 'facts' aren't checked as thoroughly as they should be, or rather than sitting on something while they wait for more facts to verify or clarify, journalists just go with what they think they know. Sure they make mistakes at times, but I don't think it is part of any plot to disseminate 'bogus' news. As to why WS requires MSM links to back up facts, I am very glad that they do. Many sites don't, and that is why we sometimes get the garbage in here that people pick up on and start spreading as fact. That helps no one. Thankfully, the mods seem to be on their toes to keep these threads as clean as possible, and I, for one, appreciate that. JMO

ETA...I have never been to Charlottesville, but it only takes a while reading articles and listening to the locals to learn who can be trusted to get out the most accurate stories.

Wow Hambirg! That's a great summary! if I have any other questions you're my guy! Really good work.

With regards to "going into the pub", I have watched and rewatched a few different videos of McGrady's, I don't see that she ever got in.

Do I think she got into Tempo? Yes. Are there cameras at Tempo? Yes right outside. Otto posted a great one last night.

Why do you think that LE has suppressed or rather not released this information? I can't wait to hear your answer!

LE says it, MSM reports it...I wasn't putting MSM at fault...

Only pointing out that the information itself seems to be highly inaccurate....so what we are quoting to support our "facts" might not be so factual.

Accuracy in MSM is a thing of the past! IMO

I would think just based on the timeframe she, and her phone, were still at Tempo, or she was just leaving there. Another report said "I am coming to a party but I am lost". Perhaps she was leaving tempo with JLM, disoriented, the drug was kicking in and she was asking for help from her friends? JMO

I think the video in Tempo and outside of Tempo are critical. We know there are outside cameras of the next building over, Otto has a great pic, I'll bet they have inside cameras as well, especially for liability. JMO
