I've been reading and lurking here but haven't posted. Just wanted to say, "nice job Springrain".

OK...I know I have brought this up many times before...this case is very dear to me personally. It really touched me and broke my heart. I know everyone has pet cases, this is one of mine. And it just makes me sick that someone would do that, and getting away with it made it that much worse. And it breaks my heart that her killer not only took her life and innocence, he also took her name. Most people die with their names--well, she died young and innocent and nameless.

The fact that the 35th anniversary is approaching is alarming. It has been almost thirty five years. 35 years without peace. 35 years without justice. 35 years without answers.

We on Websleuths will never give up. We will hopefully give her family answers. We will never stop seeking justice. We will give "Ruthie Doe" as I call her, her real name back. All it takes is one person. The story just has to reach the right person, and thirty five years of questions will be answered.

OK. About November 1st. Never Forget Me FB page is going to feature stories about her, which is great. So is the Huntsville Item, also great. I contacted KSAM radio so I hope they do as well. I also thank everyone who has shared her story to community or their own FB pages.

As I suggested earlier, I think it would be nice if everyone changed their Facebook cover/banner thing to a picture of daffodils. Like Tulessa said, daffodils represent rebirth and new life, new beginnings. It would be a nice act of unity among us to all have daffodils. It can become a symbol of that day, maybe. Also--please post plenty of news about her then too. Along with Carl's recon.

Hoping we get her name back. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday.

I've researched and will do more research on the Rhodes guy.. And I do realize the case doesn't match up a 100% but I also know every serial killer had to start somewhere .. And if the truck he was in in the 70s belonged to a trucking company .. It would be hard to have a "torture chamber" in a truck the company did repairs Ect .. Rhodes may not be the one..and there are some descrempancies in relation to his other murder.. But there are also similarities .. And worth a look

Yep, we definitely have to start somewhere. I'd like to have that sicko Rhodes questioned about her.

OK. I know someone posted a list of Ellis Prison inmates but I can't seem to find it?

From what I've heard by absolutely everyone, Ellis was/is a nasty prison unit, especially back then. I think she may have been a hybristophile; someone who is attracted to criminals. I would be really curious to know if a secretive pen-pal system was in place at that time. I think she could have been going to visit someone who was writing her but did not know what she looked like. Or else, a prison guard or inmate who did not want to admit to a sexual relationship with a minor. But I'd like to look more into the pen-pal idea.

I've always found it strangely interesting , that with my experience I have never been able to find anything on truck driver James Rhodes . The driver that found our girl... I've researched him multiple times, even obituaries .. And it's like he fell off the earth after locating our girl.. So again tonight o looked for him on social media (only find a piano player) I googled him using other terms such as "Friendship Texas" (his reported home in November 1980)

Friendswood is the town name that I've seen associated with the truck driver who found her, plus Rhoades is the spelling of the surname I've seen most used. Searching James Rhoades + Friendswood gets a Jimmy R Rhodes (no a) who used to live in Friendswood TX, age 65+, so old enough but the name is off.

Searching "Friendswood" on Websleuths shows the town has been associated with the Texas Killing Fields because of Laura Smither's murder there in 1997. William Reece is considered a good suspect in the Smithers murder because he was working in the town at the time and is associated with abduction and murder elsewhere. In September he was charged with a 1997 murder in Oklahoma:

I think his name was James Rhodes, I've seen that a lot but not 100% sure. But that guy from Friendswood sounds pretty likely.

Wow, what a creep Reece is. I wouldn't be surprised if he did kill poor Laura.

I'm going to try to dig up more on him.

I found a William Lewis Reece. Maximum release date, Oct 16 1959. Date of birth, July 1 1959. Locked up to due 1998 aggravated kidnapping charges and 2007 theft. Here's the link: http://offender.tdcj.state.tx.us/OffenderSearch/offenderDetail.action?sid=06076393
Oddly enough, he is incarcerated at the Ellis Prison Unit.

From my understanding, Reece was never charged with Laura Smither's murder. So could he be the same person?

Hey guys take a look at this case, its very interesting. It involves a cold case that was cracked by DNA on a bite mark that was left by the killer 19 years prior to DNA technology catching up.The killer an LAPD officer was Convicted in 2012.

That was interesting. But I don't think they preserved the saliva on our Doe's bite mark. I still keep obsessing over the thought that maybe the dentals could be matched.

I am sorry I have not been around to help with this. I have recently been diagnosed with a serious brain condition. I have Arnold Chiari Malformation type 1. The time that I have been able to get online has been spent getting things set up to go see the surgeon to see if I am a candidate for the surgery, researching the condition, and fundraising to make sure that I can go and get this taken care of.

Hopefully soon I will be able to come back and spend more time helping with this case as this case has really reached out and touched me. I want to see her have her name back.

Honesty, I am so sorry. My prayers are with you.

I found it: http://www.texastribune.org/library/data/texas-prisons/units/ellis/

So I'm assuming "Entered On" would indicate the date of arrest?

ETA: I looked through 12 pages of inmates and nothing. I couldn't even find anyone arrested before 1982.
"Entered on" would be the date the actually arrived at a TDCJ intake facility .. Meaning when whatever county jail transported and actually dropped them at an intake facility.. Some times convicts are transported immediately sometimes they spend a awhile in county before transport..

Is it Friendswood or Friendship? I find a few mentions of the driver living in Friendswood but none mentioning Friendship.

Well that would be a good reason I had trouble locating him.. I've always looked in Friendship.. UGhH I never ever miss my laptop or desk computer till it comes to this case.. All my files from years of looking into this case are on my desk top cpu.. But I no longer have a monitor to pull
Them up..
