LaGrone says she was the latent print examiner for this case, helping conduct comparison. Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), a software system, was used to submit fingerprints and search for possible candidate profiles. She created a report on 8/2/22.

Defense: you created a report in this case, correct?LaGrone: Correct. LaGrone says it’s part of her job to create reports, to send out the results of their latent print comparison. LaGrone says she’s considered a scientist, but at one time was working with APD.

DAY 9: Back in the courtroom for the #KaitlinArmstrong trial. We've heard closing statements could begin. Looks like the defense is preparing some kind of PowerPoint presentation. There's also what looks like a camera set up on the State's side that I haven't seen before.

LaGrone's written report is being published for the jury and courtroom to view.It is an APD document with the seal of the City of Austin and the Forensics Science Bureau. It contains the offense number and includes a number of items submitted:One envelope containing 22 latent lift cards from the exterior front door, interior front door, exterior front door window, interior front door window, interior front door "Kwikset" lock latch, interior door "Kwikset" lock and Exterior north window.Another envelope containing 9 latent lift cards from the water bottle in cup holder of bicycle, "Wahoo" bicycle handlebar attachment, right side of front bicycle rim, left side of front bicycle rim and right side of rear bicycle rim.

LaGrone says there was an immediate mistake with the fingerprint envelopes when they were first handed to her. The labels were switched on the envelopes. She could tell because the number of prints inside the envelope didn't match what was printed on the label. She said she wasn't concerned about what errors that might have caused.

Lack of KA's fingerprints at the scene are meaningless. The door clearly was not closed and locked after Mo returned to Cash's apt. KA could have merely walked in. And she may well even have been wearing gloves when she tossed the bike, and even when she loaded the gun, and the gun and bike are all that she seemingly had to have touched. We know it is likely that she discarded something in a t least one dumpster before going back home after the murder. In this post-Covid age, who doesn't still have some gloves lying around. JMO

Yes! Guess nothing was found in dumpster(s)?

I hope the defense isn't putting this witness on just to show the jury that Armstrong's fingerprints weren't found anywhere at the crime scene. In which case, I can only assume the State will have two follow-up questions during their cross-examination:
1) If someone committed a crime wearing gloves, would their fingerprints be found at the scene/on the evidence?
2) If fingerprints are unique to every individual and can be used by police to identify someone, it is plausible that a fugitive assuming a different identity might inquire about the various ways their fingerprints could be erased?

I think they didn't learn about the dumpster stop(s) until too late, as that info came from the Jeep's GPS at least a week or so later (?) so the dumpsters would have been emptied by then. And I guess they didn't feel searching a landfill was important.

@alcaprari23

LaGrone asked her opinion about the prints from the exterior and interior front door. LaGrone says there was nothing there that was suitable for comparison, meaning the prints were no good.Opinion about exterior/interior front door window: Inconclusive.Opinions about prints from the bicycle: Inconclusive.Some good prints from the interior front door window, the lock latch and the exterior north window were determined to be excluded from Armstrong.
