Maybe it was because of the one unusual element - NB's media trained and PR trained friend who quickly mobilised journalists, reporters, and did national TV interviews. I'm sure her heart was in the right place but perhaps, in hindsight, it was completely unnecessary action and blew up what has transpired to be a very sad and very localised matter into a national news event and made a drama mystery of it to boot.
In 'normal' circumstances where a missing person doesn't have such a keen and well connected friend, this would not have happened. Had it not happened, the family and NB herself may have been afforded a whole lot more dignity. JMO MOO
In my experience working with missing person cases, I beg to differ here about NB's friend seeking media attention for NB's case for two reasons: Media coverage and public interest are critical to helping keep the victim's face out there, increasing the odds that someone — and all it takes is one — will come forward with needed information. Actually, there are case studies about the disparity in treatment for the missing and why some missing persons attract and receive more attention and resources than others.
IMO, I think it was Peter Faulding who described himself as a 'world-leading confined space rescue and forensic specialist,' who appeared on scene in early February, that helped fuel the conspiracies and throw shade on the police investigation when he claimed his high-tech £55,000 sonar would find any bodies in the river and was convinced Nicola was not in the water when, after only three days of searching, and no body had been recovered!
IMO, we had law enforcement from the beginning citing they were confident Nicola did not leave the area and that she was most likely in the water while Faulding, a media w****, appeared to truly relish any opportunity to tell the world Police were wrong and he was right.
And excluding the sensitive information Investigators were guarding about Nicola, I think Faulding helped fracture public support for law enforcement and created the perfect climate for speculation about where and why Nicola was missing, and who disappeared her. It was brutal. I pray her children never read it. JMO

Why Do Some Missing Person Cases Get More Attention Than Others?
In light of the Gabby Petito investigation, some are asking what makes a case get more resources than others when it seems many other missing people are just as deserving.
