Maybe it was because of the one unusual element - NB's media trained and PR trained friend who quickly mobilised journalists, reporters, and did national TV interviews. I'm sure her heart was in the right place but perhaps, in hindsight, it was completely unnecessary action and blew up what has transpired to be a very sad and very localised matter into a national news event and made a drama mystery of it to boot.

In 'normal' circumstances where a missing person doesn't have such a keen and well connected friend, this would not have happened. Had it not happened, the family and NB herself may have been afforded a whole lot more dignity. JMO MOO

In my experience working with missing person cases, I beg to differ here about NB's friend seeking media attention for NB's case for two reasons: Media coverage and public interest are critical to helping keep the victim's face out there, increasing the odds that someone — and all it takes is one — will come forward with needed information. Actually, there are case studies about the disparity in treatment for the missing and why some missing persons attract and receive more attention and resources than others.

IMO, I think it was Peter Faulding who described himself as a 'world-leading confined space rescue and forensic specialist,' who appeared on scene in early February, that helped fuel the conspiracies and throw shade on the police investigation when he claimed his high-tech £55,000 sonar would find any bodies in the river and was convinced Nicola was not in the water when, after only three days of searching, and no body had been recovered!

IMO, we had law enforcement from the beginning citing they were confident Nicola did not leave the area and that she was most likely in the water while Faulding, a media w****, appeared to truly relish any opportunity to tell the world Police were wrong and he was right.

And excluding the sensitive information Investigators were guarding about Nicola, I think Faulding helped fracture public support for law enforcement and created the perfect climate for speculation about where and why Nicola was missing, and who disappeared her. It was brutal. I pray her children never read it. JMO

I agree with you. The friend obviously used her media contacts to get the story onto national news so quickly (I don’t blame her I think we all would do the same if our friend went missing). I think the media ran with the story that a woman just out walking her dog vanished into thin air - the story then resonated with a lot of people as many of us across this country walk our dogs alone.

I also think that attractive females often get more media attention also in missing persons enquiries - they generate more public interest.

The reality is with this case (and most missing persons cases near a river) is that when you go missing near the water you’ve very likely ended up in it and drowned - no amount of media coverage helps in these cases really as you tend to ultimately just have to wait for the river to essential push you out onto land.

It might be useful to know how that compares with the 15 minutes before. She walked 4548 steps between 8am and 9.30 according to the link, making a mean of around 750 per 15-minute time slot. Those paces wouldn't be evenly spaced out over the whole 90 minutes though - there was stoppage time at the school gate for starters - and a brisk walker would normally reckon to walk 1500-2000 in 15 mins, so 282 is significantly fewer steps than you'd expect from a dog walker and points to her progress having stopped in the first few minutes of the 9.15-9.30 span IMO. But then again if she hardly walked any distance between 9 and 9.15 either, because of her meeting, for instance, that might change my estimate. If she was just pacing or walking round in circles once her meeting started while she concentrated on what was being said, 282 steps could take quite a while.

Nicola Bulley's Fitbit gave heart rate output for eight days after she drowned

Just my thoughts.

  • PC Keith Greenhalgh examined Nikki’s Fitbit device- it recorded steps in 15 minute segments. On January 27 she walked 4,548 steps between 8am and 9.30am. Between 9.15am and 9.30am she walked 273 steps. No further steps after 9.30am

My mistake to say 282 instead of 273 but it doesn't affect the main point.

Thanks for this. 273 steps is 2-3 minutes walking from 9:15 to 9:18ish. We know she was at the bench at 9:20 and police think she fell in at 9:22. All adds up perfectly so I don’t get why there’d be any question mark on the timings.

Exactly.
Nailed it precisely.

I 100% agree. I do not blame Emma for any of this and she and her family have gone through hell over with people threatening her and her family. It was Faulding who got involved and kept giving interviews promising he would find her within an hour with his superfantastic equipment whilst trashing the police before he went, whilst he was there and after he left.He didnt even search the whole week just two and a half days and most of that time he was giving interviews. Things he said have filled so many peoples heads with conspiracy theories that have brought agony to the family and the statement released the other day reignited that. Don't get me wrong he does a good thing searching but he is a serious liability in other ways.

I agree and take on board the other points of view that people have put here in contrast to my own, it's so complex.

I think for me because it seemed so very unlikely that a fit and healthy young person would trip and fall in that fairly small river, I started to become very suspicious indeed. There were many other factors that fuelled my personal suspicions that I can't post here because they transpired not to be true and also would breach T&Cs.

However, had the entire event been contained to local news, I personally would never have even known about it. And on a 'need to know' basis literally nobody outside of the area did need to know about it.

I think the police did try to contain it and deter speculation by saying immediately they were absolutely certain Nicola went in the river but because by even then it had become a huge national news story, that seemed so incongruent and unlikely (to me). The same way that I became suspicious, so did hundreds of tiktok and youtubers etc and before you know it there was an explosion in some pretty far out conspiracy theories unfolding, they even went international / global. The same like me, in all reality, they wouldn't have ever known about it if the news had been kept only local, which it only ever needed to be.

It's hard to consider this because one doesn't want to think the friend did wrong by being so pushy, especially when so many missing women are woefully ignored and nobody ever does find out what became of them. But really it was only ever a case of a tragic event in one spot and the police did repeatedly keep saying so.

See also Madeleine McCann who had a family member who was friendly with (I believe) Esther McVey, who was a TV presenter at the time.

IMO the reason the story became so big was as several people including myself have said Faulding was on every news programme giving his opinion about useless the police were and how and he and his equipment could do better. That if he was invited there he would find her within an hour and then when he didnt find her claimed she wasnt in there which not only gave the family false hope it caused endless speculation that wasnt nice for the family and even now on his social media this continues. I dont think Emma and the other friends did wrong. They were simply trying to find their friends and have had a horrible time because of it. I do think the behaviour or rescue teams need looking into though

People get very hung up on the minutiae without stopping to consider that they're actually reading something a reporter has jotted down while listening at the same time.
I haven't found another mention of "Claire Cheshire" seeing Penny at 9.30, though that might be because most of the other online reports seem to think her name is "Claire Chesham"

Reporters are human.
8.55am approx – Claire Chesham, another mum on the school run, reaches the lower field and sees Nicola and Willow approaching the upper field.

8:59am – Now in the upper field, Nicola sends a Facebook message to another mother, Lucie Musella, arranging a kids’ playdate for the following afternoon. The message consists of a suggested time and smiley face emoji.

9.01am – Nicola joins her work Teams call on her phone, putting herself on mute as it proceeds.

9.05-9.10am – Claire Chesham once again sees Nicola walking in a loop around the upper field. It is the last confirmed sighting of her alive as Claire Chesham returns back up the riverside path.

Was MWT actually there yesterday?

That's probably because nobody is saying she saw Penny at 9.30.She says she saw Penny that morning (said in the context of nicola in field, but not specifically saying she saw her in the field) She left the field at 9.15,it is Penny who says she arrived at the field at 9.30.
Coroner conclusion Nicola probably entered the water 9.22 around the area Nicola was spotted, so establishing when Penny arrived in this area is key evidence

If what you are stating is accurate, does it change yesterday's verdict or not?
AFAIK the Coroner established the points he needed to make a judgement.
Nicola died.
She drowned.
Her drowning was an accident.

I suppose the question there is between 9.15 and 9.18.
If she was at the bench sat down then a 230 yard walk is difficult to explain in that timescale.
One observation I'd make is it was confirmed she turned the sound on her phone up at 9.18,would she do this if walking in an environment with nobody around, or is it more likely to happen when sat at a bench

was she sat at a bench or playing with Willow? if playing with Willow and so away from the bench putting it higher would make more sense

Possibly, we'll never know but instinctively it feels more likely you'd turn the phone up when sat down listening in to the meeting, than walking and playing with your dog.
It would be interesting to know the trigger for turning the phone up though

out of curiousity though why would you need it louder when sitting down rather then when you are further away playing?

I guess if you are walking and continue walking then nothing changes so no need to turn it up. If you are sat at a bench and something happens to take you away (Willow or altercation are the obvious ones) then you turn it up so it can be heard as you resolve the issue

If im suddenly needing to do something that needs me to put my phone down and i want to keep listening to the archers, i turn the volume up in preparation for while I'm further away from it.
Nothing odd. You seem determined to turn this into a conspiracy - I believe conspiracy theories are bordering on offensive to NB and her family.IMO .

If members of the public can appeal a coroners decision or demand further specific investigation or evidence though, give it a shot by all means. Imo etc.
