I don't know what you discuss in PMs, but 95% of what I discuss is what the moderators won't allow to be discussed in the thread. The chatty stuff goes on in the thread, not in PMs. That will only get worse. The threads will be for general information and chat. The important information will be discussed in "Conversations" .

Hmmm ... I never cared for the tiny box to type in so I never used PMs too often. my "chatty stuff" would often be more detailed about my gardening, sharing a link, how we are feeling (health). Things the regular thread would not need bogging it down and many would not be interested in.

We're all different, yes?

From my experience, it seems to be the cases with 20 threads that I feel there's a lot of PM activity going on, whether that's asides that can't be posted in the forum or the sharing of information that can't be posted, or info that can't *yet* be posted but later on becomes allowable. So in that sense I doubt it would kill threads off, because I think some of those off-board interactions are a sign of high interest in a case. But it can be annoying when you sense there's info being shared around and you don't know what it is! That's already the case so that isn't going to change, but maybe this way a few more people could be included in the spreading of background info? I think it might be good if you could open a conversation with the ten people who've posted most recently to share something you just found or to ask a question rather than just picking one to PM.

BUT...I don't think it will cut down on disallowed posts in the forum and reduce work for mods. I believe most disallowed posts are posted due to not understanding the rules, and the conversations facility won't change that.

interesting notions TY

Because the private "Conversations" will siphon the information out of the threads. Private messages are a nice service to the users of the forum, but contribute nothing to the forum content.

That's just the point I think we are trying to make. 'A nice service, contribute nothing to the forum" ... you don't really want to hear about my bout with IBS, do you? And if the majority would benefit from my experience, I would gladly share it in the main thread, too. :giggle:

I disagree that it's not going to have an effect. PMs are inconvenient, so most people will post it in the thread, when possible. This will make private conversations as easy as posting in the thread. These private "Conversations" could easily overtake the posts in the public thread. This will not improve the forum.

Is this gonna be like reddit where it visually looks kinda like this instead of boxes

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

or will each user have the choice i thinks its called linear of something

will we be able to make it boxes not cascading?

Well, lets all test it out when we get over there, shall we? And see how we adjust? :)

Spellz, ima.grandma, Jewels and I have been over there for a little time testing and all seems well. Will be interested to see what everyone else thinks :)

No, the layout is not like Reddit (thank god)

I suggest we get the new server running and you all try out the conversations and see how you/we like it, and whether it affects the main discussions. Then, and only then can we make a credible complaint.

Didn't expect to access site this morning. Last chance for a few days ;)

It will be interesting but I agree

its almost human behavior !

if one had two choices that were realativily similar in terms of what highway to take one would take the one with no speed limits (forgetting time issues)

i think it is human nature

i also think perceived risk or confusion ( a time out) would automatically direct into private conversations

hey ya all if you know how would ya snapshot or capture social media stuff -- that has been awful for me casue i wont do that FB silliness but often the SM that comes out ( and then yanked) is very telling info

in the private conversations those screensnaps can be seen if people capture them before they are yanked!

This is nerve racking. I woke up late and haven’t been able to read night posts. So many great posts and opinions coming out right before lift-off. I can almost feel myself shaking as I type. I think I’ll go try to find that cloud I hear so much about and see if I can catch a ride into the wild blue yonder.

There you go. You don't use PMs now, but I guess this means you might start using "Conversations"? This will increase private discussion, and take away from the public discussion, on the forum.

IMO it is inevitable that will it impact the main forum

there have been a lot of times where it was too much of a hassle to do ONE pm and I stayed on the main board

it sounds like this is , in reality. creating a bunch of mini threads (!) that is a siphoning off - how could it not be

that might be good i suppose but the siphoning will have to impact main thread

there is difference when there 97 members on any thread or 12 it really is identical

we will see

I’m active with public forum threads, and use PMs to answer questions or share info that can’t be shared in the threads. I don’t see that changing over much. And I’ve never had it take away from what was going on in the thread 🤷*♀️

The testing was offered to everyone, just saying. jmo

Not likely ... I am here for the BIG discussions and am not likely to change my habits. I like the varying opinions and even from those I may disagree with --- some have been able to sway my thinking out of the box. Private discussions are more often one-sided, all agreeing on a general consensus (at least I would think so). No one wants to hear more of my health complaints, I assure you.

As of today, it's not going to be a test. It's going to be the real thing.

And we can still complain or give our feedback and changes can always be made. Please don't worry too much. It will all work out.
