DENVER (AP) — A wealthy dentist accused of fatally shooting his wife at the end of an African safari was found guilty of murder and mail fraud Monday.

The verdict for Lawrence "Larry" Rudolph' came from a jury in a Denver federal court following a trial that lasted three weeks.

Rudolph was charged with murder and mail fraud for cashing in $4.8 million in life insurance claims in what prosecutors describe as a premeditated crime.

Rudolph maintained his innocence. His attorney suggested his wife of 34 years, Bianca Rudolph, shot herself while trying to pack a shotgun in a hurry as they prepared to return from Zambia to the United States in 2016.

But prosecutors countered that evidence showed that was impossible because the wound to her heart came from a shot fired from 2 to 3.5 feet (1 meter) away.

Lawrence "Larry" Rudolph, 67, was found guilty on Monday of murdering his wife by shooting her during an African safari trip in 2016.

The wealthy dentist was convicted of murder and mail fraud for cashing in on nearly $5 million in accidental death and life insurance polices after killing his wife of 34 years, Bianca Rudolph.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Fields told jurors that the couple, big-game hunting enthusiasts, were wrapping up a trip to Kafue National Park in Zambia on Oct. 11, 2016, when she was shot once in the heart with a hunting rifle.

Lawrence Rudolph's conduct after the killing was suspicious, Assistant U.S. Attorney Garreth Winstead told jurors. He filed the insurance claim the day before his wife's funeral, went to Las Vegas with a woman who was not his mistress the day after the funeral and invited Milliron to move into his home that same month.

Most damning, though, was the claim that Lawrence Rudolph confessed within earshot of a bartender at a steakhouse in Phoenix near Paradise Valley, Arizona, where he and Milliron bought a home together.

The six-man, six-woman jury did not look at Larry Rudolph as they entered the courtroom Monday, only watching the judge as he read their decision. They began deliberating Friday afternoon, had the weekend off and returned Monday morning to resume deliberations.

Larry Rudolph's two adult children, who did not miss a day of trial, were not in the courtroom for the verdict. Bianca Rudolph's brothers, who were also in the gallery for every minute of the trial, were not there to see Rudolph hear his fate.

Larry Rudolph waved to his mistress, Lori Milliron, as he left the courtroom. Milliron was also on trial. She was found guilty of one count of obstruction, two counts of perjury and one count of accessory after the fact. She was accused of lying to a grand jury in January about her relationship with Larry Rudolph.

The jury heard testimony from Zambians who had been flown in for the trial, including a British-trained coroner, guides from the camp where the couple stayed regularly, blood spatter experts and shooting incident reconstruction analysts.

One of the most critical pieces of evidence in the case was the gunshot wound, which hit Bianca Rudolph directly in her heart and killed her almost instantly. Coroner Daniel Maswahu testified that he could see injuries to her seventh, eighth and ninth ribs, suggesting that the bullet from the Browning shotgun entered her left chest area from a slightly angled position above her body. Other tests determined that the gun was shot from about a meter away.

This ruled out the possibility of suicide and challenged the defense theory that Bianca Rudolph accidentally dropped the gun as she frantically packed to make it to the airport for the long flight to the U.S.
Still, Dr. Michael Baden, a renowned forensic pathologist, testified for the defense that the autopsy was so sloppy it was impossible to tell the direction of the shotgun pellets.
“We can tell the entry but not the angle,” he told the jury.

He later admitted that he had never done an autopsy in Zambia and had little experience with gunshot wounds.

[..]

Larry Rudolph will be sentenced Feb. 1, 2023.

This Creep, with stacks of money, spent very little on his wife's funeral (I read this here, somewhere).
Hope he enjoys his money, while in prison for years.
True -- prior to the murder & insurance payout, the couple was worth $15M and less than $2K spent on her funeral/memorial.

Bianca Rudolph’s funeral was understated and simple at a cost of only $1,890 though the couple was worth around $15 million at the time of her death.

I'm way far behind, but happy with the verdict.

Why was the trial held in Denver? Her murder was in Zambia. They both lived in Paradise Valley, AZ and his former practice was in Pennsylvania.

Why Denver?

It was determined very early in the complaint that LR was being charged with mail fraud before he was indicted for murder. I believe two if not all of the insurers defrauded by LR are based out of Denver so US District Court - Denver Region was deemed the venue for this case. Relative to the murder charge, LR first landed in Denver when traveling from Mexico to the US in December 2021.

LR fought that Denver had venue for this case and filed a motion for count 1 dismissed for lack of venue and the motion was denied by Judge Martinez on 4/26/22.
