Adipocere is a result of fat decomposition that occurs only in specific conditions. The most important condition in this case is that it occurs during anerobic conditions--meaning conditions with little or no oxygen. If the body had been left immediately in the woods subsequent to death, adipocere probably wouldn't have occurred--unless, for example it was tied up securely in plastic bags. However, if the body had been left in, say, the trunk of a car fo some time, esp a car that was filled with chemicals that would take the place of oxygen (choloroform?), grave wax is likely to occur. So adipocere at the dump site indicates that the body was left out in the final resting place only after some decomposition had already occurred.
PGWodehouse, I would like to throw in here that there is a lot of peat in Florida swamps. I have had many occasions to see the swamps with a very dark tea color after a hard rain in Florida, not to mention it was that way after Tropical Storm Fay with 26 inches of rain over a four day period. Would that have any affect to the preservation of the grave wax on the pelvis if it was embedded in the peat that deeply?
