We got to see the full “Down the Hill” video and some curious choices by the State that could prove to be tactical blunders. Lots to cover from Day 4 of testimony in the #Delphi murders trial. Here we go…

13 Things To Know From The Delphi Murders Trial Today - Oct 22

1. The now-famous “Down the Hill” video from Libby’s cell phone is 43 seconds long, Jurors got to see & hear it all today. ISP released a photo of “Bridge Guy” & his voice saying “down the hill” in 2017…
View attachment 539941

2. It shows Libby’s phone mostly pointing downward toward the deck of the Monon High Bridge, but at one point we can see Abby & hear Libby saying “There’s no path.” What we cannot really see or hear is Bridge Guy. An ISP audio/video specialist testified how he changed that.

3. Jeremy Chapman told jurors he was able to freeze a frame of video with Bridge Guy behind Abby & enhance it by cropping, resizing & adjusting the light, color, contrast etc to get a sharper image of the man. He removed background noise so we could hear “down the hill.”

4. To be honest, I wasn’t clear what we had just watched was the “Down the Hill” video until the ISP forensic experts explained what they had done frame-by-frame. To me, Bridge Guy & his audio were nearly undetectable without the enhancements. Amazing Libby captured the video.

5. After jurors saw & heard the Bridge Guy video, the state called 3 women to testify about him. All 3 recognized the Bridge Guy photo distributed by ISP in 2017 & insist they saw Bridge Guy on the Monon High Bridge or nearby trails on the afternoon of the murders.

6. Good for the State: they were very convincing in their recollection of seeing Bridge Guy. Not good for the State: during cross exam, the Defense reminded all 3 witnesses how they described Bridge Guy to investigators back in 2017. What they described was… interesting.

7. These are the words/phrases the witnesses used:

Tall
Early 20s/30s
Bigger build
Dirty blonde curly hair
Muscular
Brown eyes
Boyish looking
Youthful in appearance
Didn’t seem short
Brown poofy hair

In other words, they described Bridge Guy as everything Richard Allen is NOT.

8. So to recap, you have ISP investigators about to testify Allen IS Bridge Guy; witnesses insisting they saw BG who’s tall, muscular & young; and jurors staring at a defendant who doesn’t match that description (nor did he in 2017). For the State, that could be a problem.

9. In another State setback, one of their Bridge Guy eyewitness mentioned her 2017 description of BG was to a police sketch artist … for a sketch of BG that the state successfully convinced the judge to suppress from the jury. Now that it’s been mentioned, that could change.

10. The defense had its own challenging moments today. Atty Brad Rozzi did not seem to score points with the jury during his argumentative cross exam of an ISP crime scene investigator & Andrew Baldwin was scolded for referring to a bullet casing as the state’s “magic bullet.”

11. Of note, through 4 days of testimony, the jury has not heard 1 word or mention of Richard Allen since opening statements. Understandable since the state is still laying the foundation of its case. But still a long way to go to establish “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”

13. I shared a bunch of additional details from today’s testimony in tonight’s 13News #Delphi Debrief. Here’s the link if you’d like to watch. Back inside the courtroom tomorrow with @EmilyWTHR to bring you Day 5 of the trial.
Good night.

That is an excellent summary.

Can we fill in other missing items from other MSM sources?

The evidence included:
  • Hollister blue jeans
  • Tie dye t-shirt
  • Gray sweatshirt (medium size)
  • Sonoma brand pink underwear
  • Black and purple sock
  • Pink sock
  • Green headscarf
  • Blacked Faded Glory spaghetti strap shirt
  • Converse tennis shoes
  • .40 caliber Smith & Wesson cartridge
  • Collection of strand of material found between fingers on Abby’s right hand
  • Strand from Abby’s left arm
  • Libby’s phone
  • Black Nike tennis shoe under Abby’s body
The items were either collected from the creek or recovered from the crime scene.

Like I and others have said before, there is very little that the jury will not believe when it comes to the crime scene and BG being involved.

The KEY QUESTION is how does the prosecution PROVE BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT that Richard Allen, himself, IS BG. IF they can prove that BG is Richard Allen, then the case is over.

They will probably lean on:
1) His own testimony that he was there in that clothing.
2) Eyewitness testimony that doesn't exclude him and other eyewitness testimony that nobody else was on the trails at the time.
3) Soft evidence that the casing was ejected from his gun.
4) His confessions.

The prosecution has not really gone into much of that yet. To me, that is the crux of the case.

Agreed, and so far all they’ve done is set the stage.

We’ve got background on the girls, the reaction of family and law enforcement when they disappeared, crime scene discovery, evidence recovery, witnesses who saw BG, and the video of BG encountering the girls prior to their murders.

They haven’t really started connecting RA to BG yet.

Early days…

All i want to see is something concrete to put RA at that crime scene - then i'd need to hear a decent alternative explanation from the defence to believe him not guilty BUT i just have not yet seen such concrete evidence

Agree.

I'm still waiting for the evidence that backs the assertions in the PCA let alone the 'mountain of evidence' that some clung onto that would be presented at trial.

Never mind proving RA was at the crime scene and materially involved, I have yet to be convinced about specifics surrounding BG from what the state has chosen to present so far.

Let justice be based on the rigour of evidence rather than selecting the evidence to support a preconceived conclusion.

JMO

I didn't need to see anymore evidence. I even said that what we the public knew so far was enough against him. I am just interested to see what if anything else they have against him that hasn't been shared with the public so far.
We all need to see the confessions--all 60+ of them, transcripts, recordings, etc. JMO

Day 4 of Delphi Murders Trial has wrapped up. Here's the takeaways:-BIG moment when Betsy Blair, who was walking the trails on Feb. 13, 2017, testified-She described "bridge guy" as "boyish" with "brown, poofy hair"-Her description was basis for this police sketch

-Blair testified that when she saw this "bridge guy" picture on the news she "immediately" knew it was the man she saw on the bridge-When asked why her description clashed with photo-She said that she made that statement when she "was comparing two sketches"

8:06 PM · Oct 22, 2024

-Judge Gull had granted a motion by the prosecution to prohibit the use of the sketches in the trial. -However, defense attorney Andrew Baldwin told the judge they will have to discuss the "opening of the door" on the sketches since Blair brought it up

I haven’t noticed the shift you’re talking about (although I’ve missed chunks of the last two threads), but I am with you on all of your last three points.

I believe that RA is guilty, very much so, but coming into the trial I did not have enough that if I was on the jury I’d be BARD. I was maybe 70% of the way there.

So far, to me the prison letter is the only new thing that’s moved the needle in either direction, and that only moved it a little.

To me, his prison letter moved the needle a lot. He clearly wrote to the warden that he wanted to confess to murdering Abby and Libby, and that he wanted to apologize to their families. You can't get much clearer than that, IMO.

13. I shared a bunch of additional details from today’s testimony in tonight’s 13News #Delphi Debrief. Here’s the link if you’d like to watch. Back inside the courtroom tomorrow with @EmilyWTHR to bring you Day 5 of the trial.
Good night.

Have we learned who the 3rd woman was? I only have 2 so far.

I didn't need to see anymore evidence. I even said that what we the public knew so far was enough against him. I am just interested to see what if anything else they have against him that hasn't been shared with the public so far.
JMO but hopefully the jury in this case will take more interest in following the normal legal precedents for convicting someone of a serious crime and be willing to listen to and evaluate all the evidence presented.

I was a little puzzled at some podcasters who complained that the judge wasn't allowing more access to the media and podcasters in court. They said it was a circus atmosphere outside the courthouse with podcasters having to wait in line a long time, cramped, etc.

Circus atmosphere has been common in many famous trials, at least since the days of Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping and Charles Manson. The circus has to stay outside the courthouse, not inside the courtroom.

To me, his prison letter moved the needle a lot. He clearly wrote to the warden that he wanted to confess to murdering Abby and Libby, and that he wanted to apologize to their families. You can't get much clearer than that, IMO.
The issue here isn’t that he confessed (that’s not in dispute) it’s if his confessions are genuine, or the result of a mental breakdown that caused him to give false ones.

The prosecution has said he revealed things about the crime that only the killer would know. I think we’re quite a ways away from hearing about that stuff though.

The states job now is to turn bridge guy into RA, all the witness testimony is mixed in how they describe the man they saw but the image of bridge guy on the bridge has to be RA for state to get to guilty,
Then they have to prove that bridge guy is the murderer,
Two different things imo, even if they prove BG is RA that doesn't automatically mean BG is the murderer,

Probably a stupid question but going to ask anyway- are all of the eye witnesses teens and adults female?

Are we to assume that no other male was on/around the trails/bridge for those few hours? Just bridge guy?

and since RA said he was on the bridge that day around that time then RA=BG

Just seems odd if there were multiple females and just one guy- but maybe I’m missing something obvious

Moo
No other male of any description whatever was there, then. In contrast, RA put himself on the first platform on the north end of the bridge. That’s exactly when Betsy Blair saw a man there.

Her initial attempts to describe that man do not perfectly match RA’s height and age, however, thus giving rise to endless failures to connect the obvious dots for people who ain’t goin’ there no how.

Ms. Blair, turning back from the bridge, saw Abby and Libby approaching it. The man on the first platform, where RA himself has placed himself watching fish, was thus the last known person of any gender to see the girls alive, assuming BG didn’t appear on the south side. (We absolutely DO know BG followed the girls across the bridge from the north side.)

Ms. Blair saw RA on that platform. RA is BG. BG is the killer. The guy is roped and hog-tied for those willing to see.

The day started with lengthy presentation of evidence introduced by the state. Crime scene investigator Brian Olehy took the stand.

Olehy detailed evidence that was found at the scene:Some of the evidence included:
•a Converse shoe
•a shoe found on the body of Abby
•a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson cartridge
•a collection of strands of fibrous materials
•swabs of blood

Most of Brad Rozzi’s cross examination centered around what they call “lack” of photos of the bullet.

Rozzi presented the swabs to Olehy and asked if any of the information on them was a link to Mr. Allen. Olehy said, "No."

Until today we had only seen a few seconds of the video Libby took on the Monon high bridge.Today the jury saw 45 seconds.

Indiana State Police Lt. Brian Bunner, a digital forensic expert, testified about his role in examining information captured from the phone. He was responsible for extracting data off of Libby’s phone.

Bunner discovered the video Libby took at 2:13 p.m. on February 13, 2017, the day Abby and Libby were last seen alive.

The video shows Libby filming herself and Abby on the bridge. At one point, the camera points up and you can see there is no one behind Abby. However, in a later shot, it shows a man walking behind her. That man has been called "Bridge Guy.”

You can hear a voice, presumably Libby’s say, "There's no path. The trail ends here so we have to go down here?"Following that, you hear a man's voice. Through audio enhancement done by Indiana State Police, it is apparent the man says "guys down the hill.”

We heard from a number of witnesses who testified to seeing the man from the bridge on the trail that day.Railly Voorhies and Breann Wilber testified to being on the bridge and trail that day and seeing a man they said was “bridge guy.”

Betsy Blair testified to walking the trail the 14th too. She says she is sure the man described as“bridge guy” is who she saw on the bridge. She says she then saw Abby and Libby while walking on the trail.

Most of the defense's line of questioning attempted to lay the foundation that Richard Allen is not “bridge guy.”They questioned Blair, Voorhies, & Wilber who testified to seeing “bridge guy” that day but described him in a way that appears to be very different from Allen.

Voorhies description:
•overdressed for the weather
•Caucasian
•a larger man with a big build
•dark clothes
•face covered over his nose and mouth
•wearing a hat
•dirty blonde hair
•brown eyes
•wrinkly kind of face
•square jaw

Wilber description:
•20s-30s
•taller man
•something covering his mouth
•blue or black jaket
•couldn't see his har
•muscular
•wearing something on his head

Blair description:
•Causasian
•20s-30s
•brown poofy hair
•younger, boyish look
•youthful
•average height
•no facial hair
• no hat

Final witness Day 4- Steve Mullin called back to the stand. He testified to the vehicles seen passing the Hoosier Harvestore on surveillance heading toward the trails.

Ive not had a chance to listen yet. Also, wasn't clear on what's been reported by msm.

Are you able to clarify if LG says "trail ends here" to AW or to BG, or is saying it to both AW and BG?

Thank you in advance.

It appears LG stated it to AW only, but wanted clarification, if anyone knows.

They didn't specify.

To me, his prison letter moved the needle a lot. He clearly wrote to the warden that he wanted to confess to murdering Abby and Libby, and that he wanted to apologize to their families. You can't get much clearer than that, IMO.

Maybe his prison companions who were praying with him helped him to see the light.
