GUILTY Abby & Libby - The Delphi Murders - Richard Allen Arrested - #216

Right, they said it came from a trail cam at first.

I don’t think LE stated when they initially released the picture of BG, that it came from a trail cam. They wouldn’t say where it came from.
There was a lot of discussion that it probably came from a trail cam from the public only.

Local TV station report on Feb 15, 2017, the day the photo was released. Reports say police would not say where the photo came from.

Press Conference Feb 22 2017. LE release audio clip and reveal that it and the photo came from Libby’s phone.

I hadn’t noticed this before, seems RA thought he’d play the insanity act more than 5 years after the murders that he committed and it’d prevent him from getting convicted. He should’ve confessed a lot sooner for that to have a better chance of success. JMO

One corrections officer, Michael Clemons, testified for the prosecution that Allen told him, "I, Richard Matthew Allen, killed Abby and Libby by myself. No one helped me." Clemons said Allen would shout to other inmates, "I'm not crazy, I'm only acting like I'm crazy."

Another corrections officer, Michael Roberts, testified that on April 23, 2023, Allen said, "I killed Abby & Libby. My wife wasn't involved. I want to confess."

Days later, according to Roberts, Allen said, "Can I talk? Can you listen I killed Abby & Libby? How do I prove I'm insane?"

I don't like this statement! Why did he say, that his wife wasn't involved?? I bet, it isn't normal for a child killer to excluse his wife for seemingly no reason. MOO

IMO, it involves feces?
Apropos feces: Has the "mud" on him, seen by a witness, perhaps been "feces"? An effective method to get clothes so disgusting, that nobody would have liked to pull them out of a dumpster later on. And maybe a reason, why RA stayed at the cs for much too long time (if he didn't SA the girls and didn't need time for it).

Would that check list apply if he was outside of the lead agency tasked with following up tips/leads and not investigating a crime scene? I honestly don’t know- DD corrected the name mistake and turned his notes to the investigators after the brief interview- I’m confused how it was marked cleared and misfiled again under the wrong name of the original tip sheet-

None of this impacts my beliefs around guilt or if RA=BG - jury found him guilty- that’s settled at this point

but it really is mind boggling that RA said he was on the bridge and saw 3 girls at the time of the murders - DD gave this information to investigators within days of the murder- and not only was it not followed up on, it was marked cleared by someone other than DD and misfiled by someone other than DD - I don’t know what DD’s mandate or scope was -

I have a hard time blaming him and with the oops, stuff happens, humans make mistakes, type explanations of LE investigators making that level of multiple errors that early in the investigation-

As I see it had investigators done their job early there mightn’t have been 5 more years of time, money, resources spent while generating thousands of leads and tips and boxes and boxes of files for later - hopefully lessons were learned- all my own opinion
RA only admitted to being on the trails when he spoke to Dulin in 2017, not on the bridge. That came later in the Oct 2022 interview. Not that is makes a whole lotta difference IMO. The tip and it being misfiled, misplaced or whatever was human error, it happens, but still not an excuse for 5+ years of figuring it out.

Thanks be to KS the Admin who did notice it.

MOO the original request IIRC said trail cam; I was watching this from the evening they were "missing."
MOO the problem is that different articles are in different news archives. Above is as close as I can get to the original right now.
This 2/16/17 11Alive article said trail cam.

“Indiana police are asking for the public's help identifying a man captured by a trail camera near the site where the bodies of 13-year-olds Libby German and Abigail Williams were found earlier this week.”

WHTR later cleared up the misreport.

“The photo investigators have been circulating of a suspect on the Monon High Bridge was also found on Libby's phone. Police used a Wednesday press conference to dispel rumors that the photo had been taken from a trail camera.

Criminals always know what they know and don't know what they don't know.

He knows he was there, knows that's him in the photo. We know the juveniles took photos and BB may have too, iirc. Entirely possible that RA saw them with their phones.

I don't think he ever saw Libby's phone. The photo she took of Abby didn't contain RA so he was too far away to see a phone. If Libby started to record a video of Abby crossing the final leg of of the bridge, RA would suddenly have come into view, she moves the phone down, it continues to record, RA never sees it.

So.... this is RA telling on himself. He sees in the photo he's on the bridge. It "couldn't be" the second time he was on the bridge because there was no one besides the girls around and they're dead so "it had to be" from his first time on the bridge, to his thinking. Therefore, he would have (wrongly) reasoned, it was BB who took the photo. His brain must have locked in on that. So, in that way, in his head, he was walking toward BB (hence he could day he never went past the first platform, never crossed the bridge, never went out over the bridge-bridge because he was "certain" there were NO (living) WITNESSES who could place him on the bridge. Therefore, he was satisfied, in his mind, he was walking OFF the bridge toward BB. And not walking TOWARD to far end, never even considered it! This shows the limits of his reasoning! Knowing what he knows -- about who could have seen him where -- he did NOT try to identify where he was on the bridge and work from there; rather, he started with WHO he could have seen him. That leaves BB. Never challenged his own thought process IMO, was confident that photo was taken the first time he was on the bridge, believing NO ONE (alive) new about his second crossing. This much then is true: he walked out to the first platform and no further, walked back toward BB enough to see she was leaving, did or didn't see sit on a bench, conveniently committed seeing Abby and Libby and letting them pass by him so he could follow them.

His actual brain freeze came out during that interview just prior to his arrest -- whoa. Thst not me if it came from the girls' camera because (subtext) no one was supposed to know I crossed the bridge. It's only me if it's from my 1st platform walk. Doh.

He walked right into it.

I feel such an enormous relief when I see the Guilty on the threads now. It was an emotional roller coaster for sure over the years, and I can't wait for this murderer's sentencing in Dec. so he can fade away into obscurity like so many before him and the many that will follow.

It's interesting to see the die hard Pro Allen Defenders dropping off of the big name SM forums like flies already. :)

Very interesting.

From the Feb 22nd press conference linked in your post -

At this time, I would like to invite Greg Massa Assistant Special Agent in charge for the FBI to the podium.

Good morning. As the Assistant Special Agent in charge my role is to supervise and lead the FBI’s criminal investigations across the state of Indiana.

… To the members of the community when I met with our behavioral analysis unit and their expertise and their experience it is often times even unwitting that a member of the community may have information that is germane to this investigation. And I’d like the community to go back nine days, and go back to the afternoon of Monday February 13th and just think if you had an interaction with an individual who -

inexplicably cancelled an appointment that you had had together,

or an individual called in to work sick,

and cancelled an important appointment or social engagement,

and at the time gave what would have been a plausible explanation, my cell phone broke, or I had a flat tire on my car, but in retrospect that excuse no longer holds water.

That may be important. Likely so are behavioral indicators that this individual may have exhibited since the afternoon of February 13th -

did this individual travel unexpectedly?
did they change their appearance?
did they shave their beard, cut their hair, change the colour of their hair?
the superintendent mentioned the clothes that this individual was wearing in the photo - did they change the way they dress?
did their behavior change?
their sleep pattern is different now?
did they start abusing drugs or alcohol whereas they would not have?
have they been anxious, nervous, irritable?
have they followed this case and what the media is putting out with a sense that is not normal?
have they had ongoing discussions regarding their whereabouts on that afternoon or thereafter?

Please, if you have that information call that into the tipline.

"On May 3rd 2023 he said he would like to confess to his crimes. He said he went to see his parents that morning, that he was supposed to eat with them, that instead he opted to go get a six-pack and he drank three beers and then he had more later."

timestamp 17 mins -

"He asks about talking to Officer Dulan back in the day, and he says shortly later they were asking people, they explained, why did you reach out back in 2017, and he explains that they started asking for people that were there at the trail that day to go down to the police station, or go make a tip… I’ve thought about it a LOT since then..."

Yes and he also did not want them coming to his home. Not the actions of an innocent helpful guy reporting his being there that day. JMO
Personally of all the things that RA did that I find incriminating, this isn’t one of them- I don’t like police cars in my driveway, neighbors gossip -

I don’t like going downtown to police headquarters, people want to know what you’re doing down (or what you did…or what your family member did…)

Fostering justice involved teens provided ample experiences of both- and I handled as much by phone as possible - at one point a realtor who was showing a house across the street, fudged a bit and told the family it was “fine” because we had LE in the family and it really was a safe neighborhood after the questioned the marked car in our driveway…

Thinking about it, I’d probably want to meet in a neutral location, especially in a smaller town, and it would look like a friendly encounter vs tabloid fodder …

I think at times our beliefs about guilt become the lenses through which we see everything, and in hindsight everything points to our conclusions- and some actions which might be actually normal/ typical for lots of people, regardless of guilt of a crime, are interpreted as signs of guilt … moo

Was it ever said why he was off work that day? And if he went back to work the following day?
The State subpoenaed RA's work records and that is a question I'd love to know the answer to myself.

I've heard he was scheduled to work and called out sick that day, but also that he was off. At this point, I'm not sure anyone knows. Hopefully that will be something we'll learn in the future. Anyone?

WRT mis-filing, wouldn't it make sense for all LE to earmark any tips, interviews with witnesses, etc. who were near the crime scene or in contact with victims, etc? Mark those as high priority, regardless of whether they are "cleared". Sort through them and revisit them regularly. No LE investigation should consider filing away a witness statement from someone who was at or very close to the crime scene around the time when the crime was committed.

Yes.
I found most the articles from 2/15/2017 with the request for info, and no trail cam is mentioned, there was speculation on FB and WS that's where the picrure came from. I probably have combined the two.
