HAHAHAHAHA. All my life, growing up here in Montana......that was "Ollie Ollie Oxen Free!!" i never questioned why we 1) named an ox or 2) called our friends that when calling them in.
I can be taught!
We said that growing up here in Portland as well. My guess as to what that means has to do with pioneers crossing the prairie to Oregon and California. If the oxen took off to graze, it would be the kids who have to go "seek" them and bring them back to camp. I can imagine "All the oxen are free!" could have morphed into "Ollie, ollie Oxen free!" for a hide and seek game.
Anyone else see that connection?
