Shelby County Jail
Mug shot of Joran van der Sloot released June 9, 2023

Judge Gray Boden asked him if he understood all of his Constitutional rights and the extortion and wire charges against him.

"Yes sir," van der Sloot replied each time.

He waived a reading of his two-count indictment and pleaded not guilty through his attorney, Kevin Butler.

The prosecution asked that van der Sloot remain in U.S. custody because of the treaty it has with Peru, where he still faces the rest of his sentence in a murder case.

He was held at Hoover City Jail Thursday night but was moved to Shelby County Jail after the arraignment.

I'm not tracking this federal case docket but this is the case number from June 2010. I don't know if it remains the same since the affidavit filed thirteen years ago.

Also, I think as much as possible of early motions will be handled via virtual court since it's such a production to transport the defendant to Birmingham Courthouse. JMO

June 9, 2023

Although the case has drawn major international attention, former senator and U.S. Attorney Doug Jones assured WVTM 13 that van der Sloot will be tried like any other criminal.

"It's by the book," Jones said. "This case will move along the docket just like any other case."

Jones further breaks down the legal proceedings moving forward in the video [news link] above.

Next steps in court for Joran van der Sloot

I’m frankly very puzzled that anyone considers Beth to have orchestrated some kind of sting on JoranvdS.

IMO it is Joran who perpetrated a sting on Beth. He played on a mother’s desperation to know the whereabouts of her daughter, he extorted money from her with false promises to reveal that information, and he absconded with HER money to go to another country and live it up. It is on Joran and Joran alone that while in Peru, he murdered a young woman.

I’m also confounded by the references to Joran as a Dutchman and what seems like some insinuations of the credibility of Alabama judges. I don’t follow the implications of him being a Dutchman and the notion that every Alabama judge could be unfair. Why would his nationality matter? Even if it were a good ol’ boy Southern judge, Joran is a white Gentile. He’s not the typical target of racism.

All JMO.

Sounds like Natalie tried to get away and then she fell and hit her head on a rock. Oh, really? Sounds like the journal garbage of BrianLaundrie. Fell and hit her head on a rock. Um. Why do I think the rock was passive? And that their heads didn't fall onto rocks but rather rocks had help reaching up from the ground and smashing into their heads. Human help.

Rock was probably late to the party too. How many cases like this have we seen, that start with strangulation, and when the gurgling starts, the rock shows up?

Justice is coming.

Yes, I recall they pulled permits immediately and knew the defendant was lying before he confessed to lying about Natalie being buried.

He told the witness that he hid her body and then told his father, who then concealed her body under the foundation of a house days later — but he had not seen this happen, according to the affidavit.

He took the witness to the house where he said her body was buried, but a review by law enforcement officials shows that there was no building on the land at the time Holloway was in Aruba, the affidavit states.

Aerial photographs show there was no construction or foundation in the area at the time, van der Sloot claimed. In a May 17, 2010, email to the witness, van der Sloot admitted to the witness that he lied about the remains of Natalee Holloway.

@Niner -- I pulled the docket as of today but don't plan to update. At this time, the Defendant has waived his right to speedy trial so no urgent motions.

A new Judge was assigned on 5/17/23 (Anna M Manasco) and her data linked below. She's not currently sharing her Court calendar but this may change. :)

Thanks for all that info. Thankfully I can access Manasco's link - so I shall keep an eye out & see if she does get a court calendar. :)

Joran van der Sloot has waived his right to a speedy trial and asked for an extension on pretrial deadlines, including whether or not he will plead guilty or move forward through the court process.

[..]

Van der Sloot’s federal public defender, Kevin Butler, on Monday asked the court for a 30-day extension on those pretrial deadlines and asked that the court continue trial setting for at least 60 days.

The deadline for van der Sloot to inform the judge whether he intends to plead guilty or go to trial is currently set for July 17.

The judge has not yet ruled on van der Sloot’s motion, but the Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney’s Office, which is prosecuting van der Sloot, is not opposing the defense’s request, court records show.

“Because undersigned counsel needs additional time to review the discovery, investigate this case, and prepare for trial, it is in the interest of justice to continue the motions deadline and the trial setting,’’ Butler wrote.

A federal judge on Tuesday pushed back the possible trial for Natalee Holloway suspect Joran van der Sloot to fall.

The order comes after Joran van der Sloot filed a waiver of his right to a speedy trial on Tuesday. Van der Sloot is the prime suspect in the May 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba during a Mountain Brook High School, Alabama, senior trip.
[.....]
Van der Sloot walked into the Birmingham courtroom confidently with a smirk on his face, with Beth Holloway's eyes on him for most of the arraignment.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Gray Borden said in the ruling that the deadline for pretrial motions is extended to Sept. 11.

A specific trial date will be set by a federal judge, Borden wrote.

Not really unexpected. Other than Beth Holloway and her lawyer, all the witnesses are located in a foreign country. Much of the evidence also arises from Aruba. Will the US pay to fly witnesses to Birmingham? Even them, the US has no real way to compel witnesses to appear.

I doubt the defense will have any useful witnesses to call, but fully expect JvdS to take the stand just to trash Beth Holloway.
