Erin Patterson is being called to the stand shortly by the defense. This should be good.

As she is a defense witness, the defense will question her first and then the prosecution has the opportunity to cross examine her, is that right?

By Melissa Brown

Erin's lawyer has told the jury that Erin Patterson will given evidence.

He did not say when that will happen.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall. This will be interesting!! I can not wait to hear her answers to everything the prosecution puts forth. Every. Last. Question.

Yep, I believe so. Each side can question anyone on the witness stand is my belief.

She's wearing a dark, paisley-patterned, long-sleeved shirt and has thick-framed glasses, which she's set down beside her on the table.

In front of her is a wide computer monitor, which will display any exhibits or evidence she is being questioned on.

A jug of water and disposable cup is also sitting on the table before her.

She gives her full name as Erin Trudi Patterson and declares that she will give the whole truth in her evidence.

Erin Patterson to give evidence

Erin Patterson will take to the witness box and give evidence in her triple murder trial.

Patterson’s lawyer, Colin Mandy SC, has told the court his client will testify.

“The defence will call Erin Patterson,” he said.

Patterson, 50, faces three charges of murder and one charge of attempted murder relating to a beef wellington lunch she served at her house in Leongatha, in regional Victoria, on 29 July 2023.

She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The court is on a short break. The trial will resume at 3.30pm.

Our justice and courts reporter, Nino Bucci, is in the courtroom in Morwell.

Members of the Patterson and Wilkinson families, including Ian Wilkinson, are in the court. Wilkinson is the sole surviving guest from the lethal lunch hosted by Patterson on 29 July 2023.

There are no spare spots in the 40-seat room.

Let's hope so...

She was about to leave the area after the lunch, imo. And she had already changed their schools prior to the lunch.

Perhaps this goes to motive. Perhaps Simon wouldn’t agree to the kids moving areas.

Simon only had the female child on weekends.
Why do you think she was going to move from Leongatha?

Erin is asked about her children

By Joseph Dunstan

She gives her full name as Erin Trudi Patterson and declares that she will give the whole truth in her evidence.

She's being questioned by her lawyer Colin Mandy SC.

He starts by asking Ms Patterson how her children were in July 2023.

"My children had just recently settled into a new school, I had changed schools at the start of that term," she says.

She says they were coping "a lot better than I expected" and were making friends "quite quickly" at their new schools.

She says her son hadn't been at the new school for long so it was early days, but it seemed the new school would "be able to cater to his identified individual learning needs" in a better way than his previous school.

Erin says at that time, the children were living with her full time and could see their father Simon "whenever they wanted to".

She says that meant her daughter often spent Saturdays with her father, but her son was "only seeing his dad really at church or youth group".

Erin was planning to study nursing

By Joseph Dunstan

Erin says at the start of 2023, she'd been accepted into a Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery at Federation University.

She says she'd deferred that for one year to ensure she had enough time to care for her children, but was planning to take that up in 2024.
